Do you know why Malaysia refused to introduce National Service?

I think we all know the answer. No country will train and arm people who are suspects or potential enemies of the state. The Japanese had an immaculate and ambitious long term plan to conquer the world by sending their people as migrants overseas, to China and Southeast Asia and as far as the USA. They took several decades before they called on these Japanese in their new countries to rise to serve their Empire against their host nations.

I dunno whether we are too smart to the verge to becoming stupid, or too gullible and trusting to foreigners that we welcomed so many with our legs wide open and waiting for something to shaft into the hole. Foreigners are given citizenships so easily and so happy to make them serve in our armed forces. We lost two of our brightest boys in Sydney in the hands of a new citizen.

The latest, we want foreigners, PRs, to serve in our volunteer army, to be trained to handle weapons and taught the art of war, believing that they would not turn against us. They could be many sleepers now in the armed forces, all appearing so loyal and obedient, perfect new citizens. Some may even be in positions of high commands.

We are truly unique in our psychic, so naïve and gullible of foreigners, the unknown elements, like the daft citizens welcoming strangers into their homes to look after their young and old. So many families have met with tragic ends. Is the risk worth taking, so foolishly? We do not believe is guarding against strangers. We want to integrate them to be one of us. I think training and taming the tigers would be a safer bet.

You are trying to construct a cogent argument on a faulty premise.

NS/ military conscription is a lousy choice for a nation's self defence. Perhaps somewhere in the past, it may have had merit. But in today's battlefield and the way combat is waged, NS is pure nonsense -- a National Delusion.

So it doesn't matter whether it is arming foreigners or locals. The argument is flawed because the premise is flawed.

BTW using Japan and Malaysia as examples is hilarious. These are fucked-up culturally backward cuntrees, whose cultures and politics belong in human's tribal past. Talk about xenophobia...you have the overt racism of UMNO in Malaysia and as a culture in Japan where everyone who is not Japanese is a GAJIN.

I have absolutely NO PROBLEM of a foreigner defending my blessed Hotel. As long as they've pledge allegiance when they take up citizenship, I'm willing to give them a huge welcome as one of our brother/ sister citizens.

I think your xenophobia has got the better of you ;-)

Malaysia did introduce NS quite a few years ago - so that contractors can make money for providing uniforms - those ghastly blue uniforms. Many teenagers died. Very little combat training though - more for indoctrination. Didn't you know?

Matilah, on a Sunday morning instead of going to church to repent, you come here to vomit all over the place. To the Japanese all foreigners are gajin. What is so different from the Americans that all foreigners are aliens?

So NS is bad, then volunteer force is good. Oh mercenaries better, professional soldiers. And you trust any asshole that come to you to pledge allegiance to you and say he want to live in your house.

What drugs are you smoking this morning? Or you forgot to take your medication?

Relac lah. You have too many demons. Repent and be saved. Put your mind at ease. Embrace the nice foreigners as you fellow man, just like Jesus will ask you to do.

Welcome foreigners, brothers and sisters in arms :-)

Kopi kau for you. Decaffinated, because you're hype up already ;-)

Reminds me of Pearl Harbout. Some of the Japanese residents in Hawaii were discovered to be spies for the Japanese. And you know the rest of the story about the surprise attack. When to, where to, what to and how to. Wonderful co-incidence that much of the American fleet got caught inside the flaming harbout.

PAP national service will fail one day. NS goes hand in hand with welfare state. When a state enforces NS, there is a tacit social contract that we defend the elite and elite take care of us.

Recently, Swiss voted to keep NS.

Austrian voted to keep NS.

The mobilization of USA in WW2 and Germany correspond to an welfarization of state. Similarly Rome was a welfare state.

Rome eventually move to the mercenary model. The reason is corruption of elites which make the citizen soldiers unusable.

The Rome are good fighters. When man fight, the elites took the opportunities to squeeze the weak women and old folks left behind. The soldiers return and found their farm sold, their whole family bankrupt.

No one want to fight.

In SG, we could have been a cohesive fighter. Our NS men realize that they are discriminated in jobs, in housing ...etc. We call it quit.

PAP elites are still wet dreaming and still deaf to the phenomenal of de-martialization of Singapore.

The asset here especially property are backstop by our citizen soldiers. When it is gone there are serious consequences. The Rome elites think they can get pass by mercenaries, eventually, the mercenaries overthrow the Roman empire.

If there is going to be a surprise attack, there is very little you can do about it.

What happened after? American citizens of Japanese descent were rounded up (kidnapped by the state) and put into concentration camps.

These were proud, patriotic, peaceful Americans who were not traitors, but solid members of their communities.

This is yet another of America's (home of the brave, land of the free) NATIONAL SHAME.

This kind of thinking is the same kind of thinking redbean and his fellow xenophobes have: i.e. you just cannot truth dem evil foreigners, simply because they are "different".

Anyway, welcome foreigners. Please take up root and stay for as long as you wish. Kindly ignore those locals like redbean and excuse them for their "sub-human" tribal intellects.

Anyway thanks for the kopi nil caffeine and all for the kopi kau kau; )

Sinkies who spoke out are not xenophobes but patriots who have been sold out and wanted to take back their country. Like the Fair Lady said, 'Jus you waite'.

But we must benchmark PAP Ministers' pay to the top 10% of wage earners.
Why ah?
Self-serving hypocrisy ah?

@redbean:

Fortunately I am neither a patriot or a lover of the idea of "cuntrees".

Hotel is my preferred idea. It means you can come and go as you please, and you are only "loyal" for as long as it remains in your interests.

It is just like loyalty to particular commercial brands in the marketplace. for e.g.: many people are loyal to Apple. As long as Apple keeps serving the customer well these people remain loyal. As soon as Apple behaves like an asshole and treats their customers poorly, those customer are no longer loyal and move away from Apple to..say..Samsung, or Sony, etc.

So far Hotel Singapore is one of my "trusted brands", and has been for decades-long time, and the relationship has never been stronger. For me, Hotel Singapore serves me, the customer, very well. Therefore, they have my loyalty as long as they keep serving up to and beyond par.

Capitalism. Meritocracy. Individualism. Choice.

@151 (your argument is a false dichotomy)

>> "PM: We don't need poverty line to help the poor"

He is 100% correct. No arbitrary definition of a pull-it-out-of-you-ass-fake-metric like the "poverty line" is going to help ANYONE.

The ONLY THING the govt can do right now to "help the poor" (and everyone else) is to stop printing money and allowing such huge credit bubbles to occur, thus driving living prices up into the sky.

The next thing the govt can do to help everyone is to get the fuck out of the way and leave everyone -- who is behaving peacefully -- ALONE.

"Laissez faire" means "Leave us alone".

Keep your fucking high salaries and your over-paid bullshit directorships -- I don't care, just leave me the fuck alone!

Chua Chin Leng aka redbean said...

The govt should help the poor ministers and make sure they don't fall below the poverty line of no dignity.

Chin Leng,

I agree with many things you write. But not this one.
That a man may be well born elsewhere. educated in another land. Marinating even another culture with other creeds, races and faiths. Is given.

But it is hardly a permanent state is it...somewhere in this man's life, he may decide he much prefers fish to poultry, or wine to beer and so on and so forth.

Life goes on Chin Leng and this man will change.

But let us get into the main reason why I disagree very strongly with you - your assumption that loyalty or love for a nation is final - doesn't I am afraid hold true, that idea can also change.

Consider this Chin Leng - if what you say is true - how can you possibly explain outfits like the French Legion - they've been around for nearly two hundred years. Served with distinction inn every quarter of the world.

Let me tell you why the Legion continues to be the main phalanx of the French in consolidating their geo-political hold of power and politics in Africa - Chad, Sudan, right up all the way to Egypt and swinging to the Middle East.

In my opinion, only the French can do this sustainably, not even the Marines or the Gurkha's come close. Those guys are good for short campaigns. But anything longer and even they will start to fray. As they all cannot do what the legion can - that is leverage on the experiential knowledge of so many nationalities within their brotherhood.

Coming back to loyalty - to me that idea negotiable and not as resilient as it's so often held up to be as allegiances after can very easily shift.

After all a country can have a profound effect on a man and his attitudes, it is like a woman - is she not. And when one spends enough time with a woman . Even a peculiar one who is slightly frigid and matronly - a sort of fondness grows eventually from the chastening passage of time and the heart can so easily take to her ways, even if she is sometimes irritating and nit picking - a man will still love her - that I feel is the nature of men Chin Leng.

Yes for so many years I have been advocating this idea - as I see it as one of the vital missing pieces in SAF.

You know the whole idea of war has changed completely Chin Leng - gone are the days of beach landings in Dunkirk and even the last Gulf War. The idea of Warcraft these days is much more focussed, carried out with less men and material. Less fanfare even - in the past - armies would fight in jungles, but these days, it's more likely to be an oil palm plantation or even without the need to use firearms.

I often worry about my children. I worry Chin Leng.

Before the Japs invaded Singapore, there were many Japs working in Spore as barbers, dentists, sinseh etc. When the Tiger of Malaysia enter the city , many of these Japs mysteriously disappeared. This is a part of Singapore history that was never mentioned...Shh.

There will some old men likely to spent all their CPF, but there are those who are able to manage well their CPF should return their CPF as promised at 55, as they are likely to make better returns then the 4 percent, let them enjoy the benefit of managing their own money and get higher returns, which is good for the economy?

Hi Darkness,

I can see your points, and even Matilah's hotel concept of this island, open door and every man to himself. The French Legion and the Gurkhas and many fighting soldiers have their glories and proud moments and history.

My main concern is the peculiar nature and vulnerability of this island. We have no depth, in land, in people, in history. This island can go anywhere, can be taken away, absorbed by any country or even just a group of people.

With only a core of less than 3m, flooding it with foreigners by the millions would dilute the original builders of this island. With a short history, it can be rewritten all over again.

Our existence is too fragile and cannot take big changes. We cannot afford any big mistake, no room for error.

There will be good foreigners coming here to make this their home. It only takes a small number that have bad intention and the harm can be irreparable. It is better to take things slowly, over a longer period of time, for the population to grow, best organically than to be inflated by strangers.

The policy makers are too shallow, or maybe I shouldn't say this, too presumptious that everything will be ok. I don't agree with their assumptions and policies. They are taking too big a risk, without knowing the limitations and weaknesses of what we are as a young and very small country.

Many Singaporeans don't even know who they are, where we should be going. This govt is making things worse by their short sighted live for today, tomorrow, never mind policies.

I just chance upon this article in TRE written by a govt scholar calling himself BE. The article is 'Scholar: Are we losing ourselves for growth?'

The Sinkies who are more thoughtful are seeing what we have become and what would we become if we don't stop the foolishness happening around us.

Anonymous said...

Scholar's article in TRE very long winded lah!
Let me simplify it for you.

redbean & 40% of Sinkies say:
"We want Singaporeans to do well, so Singapore can do well."

LHL and PAP say:
"We want Singapore to do well, so Singaporeans can do well."

Obviously somebody is reading the roadmap upside down.
Is it LHL or redbean?

Aiyah, don't insult other country's National Service lah. NS takes many forms - military, social, work brigade, peace corp, etc. If you want to refer solely to military service, then say "conscript military service" instead of NS. Malaysia has NS for almost 10 years.
