Hsien Loong – If something is wrong….

‘PM Lee's answer to Sir Malcolm Rifkind's question of whether Singapore's incorrupt system was reversible:

"I think it is reversible but I think these values and this system is fairly well entrenched. The expectations from the public are there, so if something is not quite right you can be sure that somebody will sound the alarm. And in this day and age, there is no possibility of these things - something wrong being kept secret for very long. Within the system there are mechanisms to make sure that if something is suspicious, it is investigated, and if something indeed is wrong, then consequences will have to follow.’

How many of you agree with what Hsien Loong said above? His version is that the daft Sinkies will whistleblow, will kpkb when something is not right. He also assumed that when the alarm is sound, the govt will be notified and will put it right.

In reality there are a few normal scenarios. One, the people can kpkb but the deaf frogs will not listen. Two, the right people will not kpkb as they cannot see anything wrong. So there is no need to sound the alarm.

‘And in this day and age, there is no possibility of these things - something wrong being kept secret for very long.’ Now now, how many things have gone wrong and have been kept secret for very long and will be kept secret for as long as the party is in power?

No? No such things? Do you agree?

In this instance, I do believe Lee Hsien Loong.

Not because he is a "nice guy" or "decent chap"...no none of that.

It is our old cognitive friend, humankind's best, inescapable feature: SELF INTEREST.

The self interest is rooted in REPUTATION. Singapore's reputation simply depends on its squeaky clean, almost RELIGIOUSLY CLEAN image. The govt spends millions every year promoting the Singapore Brand. Just one small riot last Dec, and the govt were shitting bricks. The people also jumped in and held the govt's feet to the fire -- DEMANDING an explanation.

Don't fuck around lah. Singaporeans and their govt have VERY SHORT FUSES. Singaporeans are known to be champion complainers and will KPKB at the slightest provocation. LHL is absolutely, 100% right. Singaporeans are also kaypoh cheebyes who will prod anything they don't like or are suspicious of until they get answers. When they do get answers, many are still unsatisfied, so they will KPKB even more.

The Singapore govt is a perfect representation on how Singaporeans wish the world to be. Anything they don't like, they will complain loudly and call their leader's all sorts of names, and blame them, and suggest that their leaders are asleep, indifferent, uncaring, arrogant, elitist....fuck it lah, just go to sammyboy or the TRE or SG Forums and see for yourselves :-))

And the driving human trait: SELF INTEREST Singapore is a nation of selfish people :-)

And that's good, IMO.

- I do not agree with this statement and the one immediately following this. Somethings can be kept secret very long. Unless his 'very long' has a different meaning from what we understand. For example, they never investigated about the claims on the newwater being contaminated with third world migrants viruses and bacteria and causing chronic illness among the population.

Looks like a typographical error, perhaps it should read; '...being kept secret for very LOONG'.

One thing puzzles me? How is it that there are so many cases of top civil servants being pulled up for misconduct and corruption over the last two to three years or so?

With that in mind, is it plausible that three to four years ago and earlier, very rarely were civil servants prosecuted for misbehavior and therefore presumed to be behaving like angels, clean as a whistle, incorruptible as claimed?

Or does the changing voting patterns, with the opposition winning more seats, have something to do with it?

What do you think?

Different times. Different values and moral climate -- especially sexuality. That was repressed and not so "in-your-face" as it is now. we live in a time where young women are tweeting pictures of their vaginas -- unashamed, in fact proud of the fact that they can reach thousands of "followers".

Today's moral climate viz a viz "corruption" has become fuzzy. Criminal bankers roam scot-free after paying themselves and their buddies squillions in bonuses, whilst little old ladies are left destitute after their savings are obliterated. All perfectly OK.

Previous civil servants worked in a climate of austerity -- i.e. use public's funds wisely -- be careful about accepting gifts and favours. They were paid respectably, but modestly. There was a definite, almost British "civil service culture".

Nowadays, all that is gone. Civil service had embraced corporate culture with all its bad sides -- office politics, sex with co-workers, sex-for-favours, back-stabbing, character assassination and rival sabotage etc. No honour anymore. Astronomical salaries, paid for by the taxpayers. The final straw is when the govt introduced the term "CEO" for the top dogs to run civil service enterprises.

Corporations of private enterprise have to compete in a market full of gung-ho players. Govt OTOH has NO COMPETITION.

Top civil servants think themselves as corporate high-flyers. They enjoy a comfortable lifestyle. Unlike their forebears who drove Austins and Morris's, today they prefer Audi, Beemers and Lexus.

So yah, it come as no surprise to me that some one who has power, money and complete trust with no oversight and no regulator will "stray form the path of righteousness".

No, an opposition party or lack thereof has nothing to do with it. It is CULTURE -- that's the way the world is going -- like it or not, makes no difference.

It is not culture. It is greed. It is corruption..

Actually there is no such thing as "greed", I doubt very much there is a thing called "corruption" either. Human nature is such that everyone is greedy and easily corrupted -- because we are ruled primarily by emotions.

One can also say that The Sheeple are greedy and corrupt because they want their govt to deliver everything even if it means forcing someone else to pay for it, or regulate someone else so that the majority of the sheeple can be "happy".

It is culture because, as I've said time and again, that every voter is of the same ilk as the govt they voted in. Together they grew up, dated and inter-married, speak the same languages and dialects, eat the same food, shared barracks and trained together in NS, worshiped together in their chosen sanctuaries...i.e. the shared and common experiences are numerous, and extensive throughout the population, and even TIME itself. The weaves of culture span generations -- even though aspects of culture change slowly.

So yeah: The Sheeple Get The Govt They Deserve

...and there is no way you can alter this fact. But you are welcome to try, and entertain us with your spectacular failure :-)

Today many Sinkies are celebrating failure as success. Many have downgraded and are claiming that they are happier with their new lifestyle of having less of everything.

Maybe they are right. What is the point of having a good job, big cars and big houses and feeling unhappy. So say the daft Sinkies.

I say give me all the money, all the big cars and all the big houses and all the unhappiness.
