Taiwan – Why the DPP lost?

The DPP has been playing the independence card since it came to power, since the Lee Teng Hui and Chen Shui Bian’s term and Tsai Ing Wen’s present term. They kept referring to themselves as Taiwanese, some even identifying themselves as Japanese, instead of Chinese. They looked down on the mainland Chinese as poor and backward country bumpkins. They were so blinded by their own delusion that they could not see the changes in China. The new China is a rich and powerful nation, economically, scientifically and military. Today, the new China and the Chinese are the ones that would be throwing money at them to keep the Taiwanese economy afloat. Without the Chinese market Taiwan is doomed.

Last weekend’s country and city election was a wake up call that the world has changed. The rhetoric to deny the emergence of a new China is futile and pointless. Taiwan’s future lies in a strong and prosperous China. The decades of calling themselves as Taiwanese, not Chinese is like a bad dream. More and more Taiwanese are again calling themselves Chinese, identifying themselves with the new China, a super power that is going to be number One soon, to eclipse the Americans in all fields.

Would the DPP be able to avoid the defeat if they have woken up to the new reality of a new China? Would they be able to do anything to stay in power and rule forever? Maybe, maybe not.Despite all the dirty tricks, corruption of power, abuse of power to suppress opposition parties, it did not work and they were routed in the latest election. An after thought, DPP could possibly learn from Singapore. They could import more foreigners to boost up the economy and at the same time boost up political support. They could do this if they start on an open leg policy to invite the Japanese to migrate to Taiwan. If the Japanese are allowed to become Taiwanese citizens or PRs, they could increase the productivity, and more connectivity with the Japanese economy. And the most important part of this, the Japanese new citizens would vote for Taiwan to be independent of China, and perhaps be a part of Japan, become a semi colony of Japan.

The Taiwanese do not care about being semi colonized or being overrun by the Japanese. They do not mind being the pawn of American world domination, to be used against China and to be killed in the process. They have no real identity and would be happy to become Japanese as long as they are not called Chinese. Oops, I mean some Taiwanese, especially those in the DPP. Those in power only care for themselves, to stay in power and be rich. The loss of Taiwan’s independence and sovereignty, to become a vassal state of another country, to be taken over by the foreigners, do not matter to them. They are only self serving, even to turn traitors to their own people. How nice to become Japanese.

For their own interest, they would not want to see the new reality, that China is the future, the major power of the 21st Century. They still think that Japan is the super power, the rich country, the future. They deserved to lose the election that would pave the way for the KMT to return to power and a return to China. The Chinese people would reunite as the new force of the 21st Century. Think about it, a reunification would mean the Taiwanese people would become part of greater China, or greater China becomes part of Taiwan. China would belong to them, instead of wallowing in self pity in a tiny island and hoping that the Japanese or the Americans would be there to protect them when they could be protecting themselves as proud citizens of the most powerful country in the world.

Would the people in Taiwan choose to become the people of the world’s number one super power or remain an American or Japanese crony, constantly risk becoming a war zone? A rising China means opportunities for growth and for the people of Taiwan to find their pot of gold in China. There are now more than 2m Taiwanese working and investing in China and growing.

DPP and PAP both had two Initials PP that is as one Bro Anon said Party against People.

Both are self interests to line up their pockets instead of serving the People.

Many in both parties are also bananas align and called the Americans God Father.

They even scorned their own and aligned with their previous Coloninial Masters.

Theit Minneninal Generation learnt a painful lesson when they trusted and voted that Tsai woman as President.

Same as the Sinkies Minninenial Dafts in the last GE.Yet they kept blaming the oldies who majority had gone to sell salted eggs.

At least now they awoke. Will daft Sinkies wake up???

Left to be seen in 2019.

The DPP under Tsai Ing-wen blamed China's interference for the election losses. It refused to admit that misrule and unfulfilled promises caused its downfall. Tsai's reforms on pension scheme and labour laws were unpopular with voters. The KMT has a rising star in Han Kuo-yi. He resonated well with voters and won in Kaohsiung, a DPP stronghold for the last 20 years. KMT victories augur well for cross-straits relationship but a slap for Uncle Sam who has been doing its damndest to drive a wedge between compatriots and stoking separatist feelings.

@ One China, Two China, many China policy:

The way I see it, and gleaned from "opinions" of my Taiwanese-lovin' Singaporean friends is this:

1. DPP & Prez Tsai Ing: too fuckin' arrogant...dun listen to the people. And Taiwanese people got "attitude" ok? Dun fuck with them. They are a proud and independent people, even the women are "garang". Many lau peng NS-men from the 70s and 80s will attest to this, as many of us have had "adventures" as frisky young bucks, thank you SAF ;-)

2. The People want their govt to engage with Beijing and Prez Xi on their terms, not terms dictated by the mainlanders.

HK'ers are cut from similar cloth: they will give Beijing some "face", but not too much. Yes, unification will happen, but it will be in concord of agreement rather than the unilateral decisions of the Beijing mandarins.

To rule over Chinese people....not so easy lah. LKY's idea was to smash them (local Singaporean Chinese) by fear is some quasi mix of PAP ideology and Confucianism, using culture, absolute power and a host of Machiavellian methods to bring some "order" to an old culture of peoples who have been bullied by their rulers throughout their history.

Unification was unattractive and unwelcome when China was weak and poor. For nearly two centuries, China and Chinese were associated with poverty and shame.

With China rising, a Chinese renaissance, being Chinese is rich and powerful and soon modern and cool, the mindset of overseas Chinese would gradually change. The pride of being Chinese at the moment are being felt by the mainland Chinese and is increasingly spreading across Asia and the rest of the world.

Chinese are now welcome, maybe just because of their money for now. The West is getting to realise that the Chinese demon they created is no longer the demon they could kick around. The recent fiasco by Dolce and Gabbana in Shanghai is a case in point. Big brand Italian name has to apologise to the Chinese for insulting Chinese culture. This is unthinkable in the past.

Wait for the day when China buys up European and American cities. It would be a day of reckoning.

Many Taiwanese are starting to realise that being Chinese is to be proud of, no longer a shame. The whole world is crawling to China. Europeans are learning to speak Chinese. Many Africans are fluent Chinese speakers.

The time has come for China and the Chinese Civilisation to stand as an equal among the rest of the world. No longer is the West thinking that it is alright to ridicule China and Chinese. Everyday the Americans are struggling to keep up with China for fear of being overtaken by China. It is a futile effort. China would overtake the West and the USA in a decade or so in every field.

By then Taiwanese would be proud to call themselves Chinese. No sure about the bananas here.

>> Chinese are now welcome, maybe just because of their money for now <<

Not just "for now". For as long as they have the bucks. With money, you gain social status...sometimes respect, but that also depends on your behaviour. What you will definitely get is ATTENTION---which can be good or bad.

We live in a market-centered world. We have jobs and wealth because of production, trade, commerce and markets.

For a few hundred years in the modern era, capitalist western nations were the wealthiest. Collectively, they are still the wealthiest. There are wealthy people in China, but it is still essentially a poor cuntry, albeit growing rapidly and advancing like no body's business.

The Chinese who have made money are understandably proud, and nationlistic after being ridiculed as a culture for a long time. Who can blame them?

Back in the 1970s, everyone kissed the asses of the Japs, cos they had the bux. Before them it was the non-commie Euros and the Yanks. In fact, in most of the world, the "hated" Yanks are still ass-kissed cos every opportunist wants to seperate the American from his money...even though the US dollar is simply expensive toilet paper.

So yeah, having dough elevates one's social status. As a trader from Goldman put it: "I'm a 7 in a suit, a 5 with my shirt off, but a solid 10 if I have my credit card at the bar in a club".

If you have any doubts about "conspicuous consumption", just ask Jho Low. He spent the 1MDB money like it had a "use by date"....even the rich folks of the world were SHOCKED at how this young man conductedd his spending sprees. Everyone took notice. Evryone PAID ATTENTION

Election results show Taiwanese are unhappy that Tsai Ing-wen's administration has not pulled Taiwan's economy out of quasi-stagnation. Taiwan's economic growth was 2.64% last year, markedly lower than world average of 3.7%.

Despite Beijing's cooperative stance, Tsai's wheeler-dealer denial of 1992 Consensus has forced cross-Straits ties into deadlock. Tsai administration's secessionist stance has not only soured its crucial relations with Chinese mainland, but also made it unpopular with people on both sides of the straits.

In the past 2 years, number of tourists from Chinese mainland, the largest source of tourism revenue for Taiwan, has slumped by 40%.

Tsai, who had exhausted her means to beg United States' protection and endorsement, must have realized it is not only her economic policies, but also her separatist stance that has lost her the support of Taiwanese people.

The election results shows that Tsai's administration has betrayed Taiwan's interests and become a troublemaker whose actions have drifted farther away from the practical needs of Taiwanese people and the historical truth of the consensus there is only one China.

Taiwan's recently concluded election wasn't all about politics. A sort of referendum was conducted simultaneously. Voters were asked 10 questions. Tsai Ing-wen got more than she bargained for. Voters rejected DPP's proposal to allow same sex marriage. They disagreed to scrape the use of nuclear energy in favour of coal. Taiwanese want clean air. They also rejected the proposal to use "Taiwan" to replace "Chinese-Taipei" in future international sports events. It implicitly rejected DPP's move to make Taiwan independent. This result brought wide smiles to Chinese leaders as it is an affirmation of the "One China Policy ".

DPP lost simply becoz people's lives getting harder --- harder to get jobs, keep jobs, or to get good salaries. Young people can't afford flats in big cities, especially Taipei area.

KMT will also lose in next GE if people's lives don't see big improvement by then.

The easiest thing for KMT to do is to be friendlier to Beijing, and have more cross-straits investments etc.

But KMT will have to walk a fine line --- too much concessions to Beijing will cause Taiwanese to kick them out too.

The above seems to be applicable to Singapore.

As for the nuclear power, I thought DPP went ahead to build a nuclear plant without the approval of the Taiwanese people and the people are objecting to it, that nuclear plant is too unsafe for Taiwan? They want the nuclear plant to be scrapped despite the billions spent on it.

Titiana Ann Xavier said...

In a surprise victory, Taiwanese voters decisively rejected the government’s phase-out of nuclear power, 59% to 41%. Pro-nuclear activists were jubilant that they won the required 5 million votes to pass the referendum. Taiwan suffered a deadly blackout last year which threatened its semi-conductor industry after the DPP government shut down a nuclear reactor.

@ Multi-China Policy:

As I was saying about public opinion from Hong Kongers and Taiwanese about the mainlanders and the govt:

http://www.atimes.com/article/data-shows-hongkongers-dislike-mainland-government-people/

https://www.mac.gov.tw/en/News_Content.aspx?n=2BA0753CBE348412&s=38BB7B9F0003BE88

Beijing has its work cut out for it. They are going to have to work very hard and maybe play dirty to get these "rebel bananas" in line 🤣😂

Many western pundits have criticised China's "social credit system". 社会信用体系. I am not a western journalist, but have experienced first hand the lack of social etiquette in China back in the early 2000's. Motherfuckers will spit everywhere. They'll smoke in lifts and talk loudly on their cells...don't even mention the public toilets...and generally behave like inconsiderate pricks.

No wonder mainlanders are hated in socially-aware Japan. And Hong Kongers and Taiwanese consider the mainlanders to be dirty, uncouth and rude. Even the Chinese govt said "enough is enough".

So it comes as no surprise that I am a HUGE FAN of China's Social Credit System, and it is straight out of the PAP playbook, but "upgraded" with today's tech. The PAP had to slap Singaporeans really hard to get them to stop littering and spitting, and generally behaving like uncultured bums. Although our "social campaigns" were ridiculed in the world's press with words like "authoritarian", "dictatorship", "Orwellian"...and so on, these campaigns were remarkably successful.

There is little doubt that China is learning a lot from our PAP, especially from "Grandmaster Lee". Xi Jinping and Deng Xiaoping are/ were huge fans of Lee Kuan Yew and his personal style.

The main reason I am "long China" is because whether you like it or not, Lee Kuan Yew's "style" has very good probabilities of success. China's been taking our ideas, which Lee & Co have shared freely.

When the day comes when China "arrives" at the top, rest assured that one tiny Red Dot was the crucible for the ideas of their success.

Chua Chin Leng蔡镇龍 aka redbean said...

Hi Ann, you are right on the nuclear issue. They voted not to close down the nuclear power stations. I read wrongly.

Matilah's comment on LKY's contribution on social habits. His great contribution is to convinced chain smoker Deng to give up smoking, a dirty and smelly habit. He slammed this down in Singapore to the chagrin of his ministers that were also chain smokers. If not because of LKY, Singapore would be so much dirtier and smellier and no young turks today would have the clout to keep the no smoking campaign and banning smoking in public places going.

There are good things to learn from Singapore that the Chinese would learn, not the bad things like touching the people's CPF money or allowing property prices to go skyrocketing like Hongkong, or unrestrained immigration policy, or unthinking or mindless 'investment' using OPM on shitty companies and low tech, low skill and low entry barrier companies like F&B, education or boarding houses.

DPP's defeat has strong message for PAP - don't bow to the homosexuals' demand on Section 377 (Unnatural offences: Whoever voluntarily has carnal intercourse against the order of nature with any man, woman or animal shall be punished with imprisonment for life, or with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to ten years, and shall also be liable to fine.)
