Driverless trains need drivers

Below is a comment by a Stupida posted in TRE.

“After spending a fortune on driverless trains,
we will now have drivers in the trains becos the
tech is not working. However, we are going to go
ahead with being a cashless society – and do it
Overnight, rather than ease in – and there’s no
backup in place when the machines break down. “

Stupida has a point. Driverless trains come with a technology to save on manpower, thus more expensive than trains that need drivers. Now driverless trains need drivers to be more efficient and safer. This is really stupidity has no cure.

And it reminds me of not just going cashless and when the system goes bonkers, everyone must make sure got money in his pocket, but driverless cars. They are testing driverless cars and if the above case of driverless trains is what is coming, driverless cars would still need drivers to be safe.

What’s new, kopi O kosong with sugar? Saving a life time with money in the CPF for retirement but not enough money for retirement? Still need to save more and have more insurance policies. Having compulsory medical insurance and still needs to have minimum sum in Medisave Account to be doubly sure got money for medical?

Got PM, 2 deputy PMs, still need more ministers in PMO? Got MPs still need mayors?
Alamak, susah lah. Not only susah, anyone think this is a big waste of money?

Uncle RB,

In Economics, such situation is likened maciam "big economic sickness" lah ... heard before?

They also have a BIG technical term to label it.

Namely "X-INEFFICIENY"

In coarse dialect lingua, it means "jin jiat lat", "kan dao", or some other phrases like "kan si lang jiat lat", correct?

Not very good in hokkien cos not a hokkien, so pls correct if the phrases are used incorrectly.

So to put it in "mathematical equation" (for such situations), mb can be formulated as below in hokkien lingua:

X-INEFFICIENCY = kan dao

or equivalently

X-INEFFICIENCY = kan si lang jiat lat"

Rb, since time memorial, the ruler must create jobs and economic opportunities for supporters so as to get support. It's still being practise today so nothing to be shocked about lar. It does not mean it's the right thing to do but it happens.

On theory, yes.

This part not agree, too many cook spoil the soup. Appoint the right person for the right job is more important than create too many unnecessary posts.

Yes & No.
During the Old Fart time, Yes.
No, as the current one, seems it's like a puppet & useless as constitution has changed. A safe guard maybe neccessary to prevent a mindless spending.

In this area, PRC is way way ahead.

When they spend on expensive angmo technology, they make sure the essential knowhow are transferred to the Chinese engineers.

If you bother to read their Economics textbooks, Math textbooks, Science textbooks, Engineering textbooks etc, you will know what technology transfer is and much more.

Under GoaLaonomics & TakBonomics, the attitude in this crucial area is "borchap"?

So when the real problems come, noboLEE know where exactly went wrong and solve thee problems once and for all?

Look at the mrt breakdowns. All the engineers like tee tee too too very knowledgeable in many technical details but in the end, the bottomline is exposed for the entire universe to jaw drop ...?

After more than a decade since 2007, the trains are still breaking down ...?

In Economics knowledge transfer, it is no different?

The knowledge transfer is partial and incomplete at best? At worst, what ...? One gazillion face palms?

Whereas for PRC, reading their textbooks alone already showed that the Chinese have way surpassed the knowledge transfer the angmo passed on and gone further than the original knowledge transfer ...?

It is rare or non-existent in old fartland ...?

The almost 30 years of GoaLaonomics & TakBonomics may have done untold (& arguably irreversible) damage to the younger generations and overall the prospects and future of old fartland ...?

When you have a leader who is obviously incompetent, inefficient, ineffective, inept, and characteristcally deficient leading Singapore, the results, speak for themselves, are:

1. Every Ministry is over-staffed;

2. Every minister is over-paid;

3. Every Budget is over-estimated resulting with lavish spending and over-surpluses.

4. Every citizen is over-worked;

5. Last but not least, the country is over-crowded we ugh over-influx of foreigners.

Yet so many years (14) have passed and he still holds on to the rope of misery?

Some common sense if you like to hear doom observations. A new state often has citizens full of hope after colonial bullied living. Mati ka Mati ka, sounded. The governors were in full steam sailing forward: follow me. After 50 years, the state s concretes are weakening. Painting layers of new color or tear down. Bukit Hoswee hdb old flats disappeared. 50 years is long time. East Germany collapsed at 41th year. Heng ah, this little state still exist. Like the cashless neto payment. It has 30 years of practices yet it could clock up a continuous stop functioning for 120 minutes, right in 2018 before cny shopping time.

This 2 hours long stop is like owl crying at night. Its time for this state to wake up. In parliament, its like a drama show saw on tv. It was supposed to talk about increase in tax on every purchase. It ended up a korean drama episode on how to poke someone with schemes available. On a broader picture, it is a state govern by shows, by cosmetic faces, everyone wants to look good. Trains can break down, cashless can break down, that is routines and must not be too concerned. Look good is main concern.

Voters cannot see the indications of what the ministars are doing? The cashless system has no valid reason not to function. It said connection with bank module was down. Was there only one connection module? Why cannot have stand by module activated when A connection is down? Here you voters did not get it: its likely again, the hired in charge was not qualified. In XgX, it was down for hours no trading bcos the UPS was not charged. Dare to tell u that. Did they trigger a stand by electricity generator? The one in charge was a foreigner.

Take note, the problem is endless because, in urban planning there is a concept called gentrification. One urban planner insisted on 10 millions population. It is a gentrification: get in the well to do to displace the local residents. This is gentrification.

But the got in degree holders from universities ranked world 3000th, and came with show pieces of fake masters without attending classes. So the problem is endless.

Can the state last for 60-70 years?
They can keep expanding with more deputies peeyams and ministars. They cannot get into the silver servants jobs to check if the cashless system had stand by module. Got this point right. Next 20 years will not last for this small state when it expands with displacement of residents to 7 millions population: 4 millions foreigners inside. The struggling for power will emerge from foreign intervention.
By then, the expansion of ports at Forest city will draw business away. The Thai east economic corridor will integrate with Malaysia s e commence. The sinkieland is left alone because it must work on neto.
The rest of imagination is up to voters who only think the army scholars are doing their jobs. The voters voting for alternative are expecting more quality. Generally all voters should alarm that there is such thing called aging of a statehood. This small state has diluted national identity. Groups from the north are powerful on this little land when voting for the north. Imagine the size. When they seize on this little land, will there be strong resistance? It is the result of gentrification. If one thinks statehood is of value, vote for alternative or else, the erosion continues till it is gone after 80 yrs or 90yrs old age. This state keeps going for showing not substance and does not encourage strong alternative policy will drive to its own demise. Similar to the trains and cashless system. No backup.

This Stupida person is obviously not a STEM person.

A train is a series of metal boxes travelling along a fixed horizontal line. An elevator is a metal box which travels along a fixed vertical line.

Before elevators were automated, they had to be "driven" manually. Does anyone remember the old CK Tangs and Robinsons (Raffles place, before it burnt down) stores? They had lifts with uniformed "drivers". Smaller buildings had those charming cage lifts. You had to close the double doors properly before you could get it lifts to move.

...and then, the automatic elevator was invented.

The same goes for electric trains: They are just horizontal elevators

Autonomous vehicles are way more safer than vehicles operated by humans. Software fails at rates FAR LESS than humans who make all sorts of mistakes, which often lead to fatalities.

So the argument "what happens when the tech fails" is hollow, and bone-head IGNORANT. Because you can also ask "What happens when the human driving these things fails?"

Driverless vehicles are coming whether you like it or not. Algorithmic everything is how the future is going to be: trading securities, driving, running governments, the legal system (algo judges...already being tested in the EU), smart drones for delivery and combat, robot soldiers., algo journalism (30% of "news" now written by "intelligent" machines)..etc etc

Frankly, I do have concerns about all this high tech shit and a total reliance on algorithms. When the shit goes wrong, boy does it go wrong. for e.g. if you lose your phone, your life is totally fucked until you can get another phone, which thankfully you can at any 7-11. However tech fails are far less an issue than human error is.

Are machines better than humans? Yes they are for mundane repetitive or step-by-step tasks. Do machines fail? Of course because they were designed by humans...who make errors.

» Do you think there is a need for a President in this little piece of rock? «

Yes, for political purposes. No, if you use logic and reason to get to the answer.

I have long argued that the idea of a president was bad enough, but the idea of an ELECTED (as opposed to appointed by parliament) president is the worst idea of all. And now see what has happened.

I have also made the case on numerous occasions that a small, efficient and wealthy city-state like Singapore does not need a huge and wildly expensive government to run it. All you need is a small cadre of smart folks to occupy 2 or 3 floors of a modern commercial building...that's all the people you need to run the place. Have a governor or a mayor...no need for PM, President, cabinet.

Parliament House can be sold off to Far East who do the best private work in Singapore. Let them turn it into an extension of Boat Quay, create more jobs, more wealth and more vibrancy for Singaporeans, foreigners and tourists to enjoy themselves.

Probably in the future, all countries all nation will be under ONE ruling with ONE ruler, there will be no more barriers when travelling from one place to another. Most of the so-called countries rules will be automated with artificial intelligence & robots doing the jobs, or probably Robots or Cyborgs will take over in the running of Mother Earth, human beans might even become cyborgs to navigate to outer space, sort of a sci-fi thing as it cud be a sci-fact in future.

@136:

Yes, there are all sort of possibilities in the future. Most of them, we still cannot imagine. For all intents and purposes, the future, is unpredictable. The further out we go into the future, the less we are able to accurately predict what will happen.

I'm only concerned about immediate time frame. Developments in the algo/ A.I. /robot space are measurable and real. We already "sort of know" what is going to be here in a few short years. The machinery is being built, billions of investment dollars flow in by the day, kids are being taught STEM subjects.

Change in our times is rapid, but humans being what they are, are adaptable, but slow to adapt. Humans adapt very quickly when the "threat" or "opportunity" is clear and present. For e.g.: if there's a fire in the building, adaptation is immediate. Similarly if a bunch of hot women offered free blowjobs to guys over 50, this blog would be silent until the offer expires. Instant adaptation! 😂

In evolutionary terms, humans societies and civilizations evolved very slowly. Our human world was more or less the same for hundreds, if not thousands of years in the past. This suited our human nature which favours stability and security over anything else. Food was scarce, and people had to use their bodies all the time, so diseases like diabetes, heart disease and obesity were rare. People worked daylight hours, and slept during the dark. People stayed together in tribes and family cohesion formed the basis of a stable society.

Nowadays food is everywhere and cheap and people are sedentary, and most of them are living with a chronic sleep deficit. We are living longer, thanks to med tech, but we're also getting a whole lot more of obesity and lifestyle diseases, and everyone is EXHAUSTED which affects everything from mood to physical biology. Humans have adapted to the changes in modern life, but not all of these changes are "beneficial" to our biology.

So the future of tech impacting our lives is a very sharp double-edged sword. It will disrupt everything from economic life to entire societies. We will do as we have always done: build our cities and craft our lives according to the tech of the day, integrating it into our lives.

When fire, metal and tools were first used, that changed how humans lived. However these days the changes are so rapid and disruptive that people (many unaware) are being swept up in the "negative externalities" of fast, unstoppable change.

In order to be Sinkies politicians one needs to be top talent first meaning academically he/she must also be a Top Scholar (President Scholar or Army Scholar). Without that, u r out of the game. It's like the ancient China Imperial Exam (状元 or top scholar), if can't make it u r out of it don't even say about 'punching above own weight', even ancient Chinese also had '武状元' or Top Warrior of the country. So don't be mistaken the meaning of old fart 'punching above own weight', what he means r to excel in the country examination system first before can be considered in the next level.

"punch above its weight" often appeared in western media report such as bbc, when it reported one small country s old man commented on relations between US China or the west. The journalist would have to explain how one small country s old man had news worthiness. Inevitably this phase punch above its weight would be used.

One hardly see this phase. AS to your unique explanation on examination, it is not logical. Top scores in exams results u call punch above someone s own weight? Who will believe the scholar s ability if his ability cannot match well with the scores tabulated?

If your interpretation were to be used, u need to change the dictionaries.

Don't worry. After a short break from our sponsors of hard logic and reason, the "vulgarities", which make me such an endearing and memorable fella, will be resuming.

@ Everyone---all the "winners" and "losers"

I've lived my "best of 2 worlds" life between Singapore and Australia for over 40 years now. Although Australian society is far more advanced in terms of "humanist values" than Singapore, living in Singapore has many distinct advantages.

Being economically more "open" (i.e. "free market"), ambitious people do really well in Singapore. Especially small business startups. In Australia to start a small business requires a small fortune. There are thousands to be spent on licensing, training, compliance etc...even before you can even get off the ground and earn your first kachang-puteh dollar.

Capital Gains Tax. This is where Singapore really starts to shine. CGT's are low, if they even exist for that particular transaction. In Australia, CGT is a reality. Even if you bought some BitCoin for $200 a few years ago and sold it for $19k a few months ago. TAX! Pay up or break the law!

Low personal income tax and corporate tax: Another fantastic arse-kicker from Singapore. Even with the GST, Singaporeans are definitely more "liquid" than the average Aussie who sees ~30% disappear from his paycheck EVERYTIME he gets paid. Plus when he spends his money, he kena ketok again with 10% GST on everything.

So the ability to build capital in Singapore is definitely more "compassionate" to the people starting from Ground Zero. I haven't even begun to describe the VAST readily accessible RESOURCES abound in Singapore. Fantastic public library services. The sheer volume of courses available at good prices for people to learn new stuff. Courses in Australia OTOH are expensive. Consider the minimum wage: AUD18 an hour. Plus employer superannuation (CPF---real type where your money is your money, not fake Singapore pyramid) of 9.5%.

So then, what's so special about Australia> The life and the lifestyle...Australia will always be high on the list of one of the most liveable cuntries on earth, mainly because hey, it's not just a cuntry, it's a Cuntinent! 🤣

There are many other arguments to be made on the cost and benefit of remaining Singaporean and living a Permanent Tourist lifestyle elsewhere.

Being Singaporean, you have to use "positive kiasu" to look after your own best selfish no-compromise interests.

Unfortunately, the majority of Singaporean use "negative kiasu", and That's why they have the government they deserve.. Politics, evolves out of the culture. Cultural traits, both the negative and positive, will be reflected in the type of politics and government the cuntry not only deserves, but is required for it to continue (or die).

You can't even have conversations like this nowadays, because 30 secs into your opinion, some cunt will call you a "racist". Cultures are not "equal". The will never be, and they never should be. IMO, left alone, cultures will slowly meld with each other to become more "universal". If you look at the evolution of the internet, and the globalised world, you'll find several examples of this phenomenon.

So everyone, have a "Positive Kiasu" Day...and plenty of sex! 😛

First of all, this is a blog, RB's Blog. Not a Forum. You don't even know what is a Forum and what is a personal blog, yet you want to show off how smart you are to everybody here? Ridiculous!

Second, your little pee-brain can't even distinguish between comments, discussions, remarks, repies, recommendations, reports, suggestions, views, opinions, and pure conjectures, and complaints.

Third, in your preconceived, fixated self-glorifying brain, you simply lump everyone together and every comment as complaints.

Even if all comments are seen as complaints through your jaundiced-eyes, complaints are meant to improve the country. Therefore they should be taken positively, though they may of necessity be negative in their presentation.

A country devoid of complaints is as good as a desert filled with human-robots and machines,

When you said, "Talk is cheap", then why are you talking here? Are you not telling people directly that you are "Cheap"!?

And your prediction of PAP getting 80% Next GE is not "Cheap"? On what basis?

And you want to bet? OK I bet with you for $50. How am I going to know who you are? How to contact you? Please let us know your NRIC or phone number.. If you do not dare to reveal, then your bet is actually HOLLOW HOT AIR!

The old fart had no system. Pragmatism is not a system. It is based on whims and fancies, as it suits fit in the name of expediency. Fire-fighting so to speak.

He himself was a traitor. Sold out fellow countrymen to the atrocious and murderous Imperial Japanese Army.

Old fart had his own idea on selection. U agreed with him. That s what u posted on it.

The next pm should has his own idea on selection. Need not to follow old fart and yours standard.

All ministers walk on street, they are not on wheel chairs. Why not any one on street cannot be minister?

Until you know the new pm, you then tell him how you want him to follow old fart s selection criteria. The new pm might say yes sir, will follow your idea to choose ministers.
On the other hand, all other voters will want the new pm to own his very own set of selection criteria.

Old fart is not the pm. He is history. U chose to stand still in thinking. Cannot go beyond old fart? Why live now?

Some goes off younger also not a burden to their families of being older and older.

Anyway, just have one organ less come to the worst.

Many still live with their organs cut off. This is just a normal routine scan and just to confirm whether beign or not.

Person should know their bodies better.

Anyway, tks your concern. Have to carry on Langgar with you.

Reports that Disgraceful wants to proceed the floating balloons to consult the AG.

First of all, I am not speaking facts, as recorded in old fart's own books.

Secondly, who the fucks you think you are to imply that I must be somebody then I can write about the old fart? Only you can write about old fart?

Thirdly, I never sell out my country or my countrymen, how am I a traitor or ingrat? Staying facts about old fart is traitor or ingrat?

Forgot to take your medicine?

Good to see that you are optimistic.
But whatever,I come here just to enjoy n read your thought.
We have many thing identical ,age apart.
Some boliao kopitiam aunties are not gracious though claim to be .Probably trying to impress some one but not able or too simple minded that it only bring in more trouble and resentment and cause the organisation to lose more support.
That's why I say some laogor are just suitable to be a housewife at home or give me a good massage .
I am concern that doing the unnecessary may cost more votes and probably your wish of seeing what you want may come true.
It's you that i am more concern about .
It's still not too late to consider me SIL:-)
Cheers.Hope to meet up if you come north next month.

If a person isn't a top talent or top scholar, he can't be a PeeAm or minister. Top talent can be someone like Gandhi, Liu Bang of Han Dynasty China, Zhu Yuan Zhang of Ming Dynastic, these r warriors with supreme leadership & experienced real war before.
