The support for Lee Kuan Yew never faltered in the earlier years, and he never really need to depend on new citizens to shore up his base. Lee Senior knows that very well, and he even said in one interview that the older generation, especially ladies, unequivocally supported him for years. So why invite trouble by allowing mass immigration into his tiny tightly controlled enclave, that will entail more of everything from housing to water? They just partially solved the housing problems and were still quarreling with Malaysia on water agreements.
The 4G leaders have no such convictions of being able to maintain their base, and with falling support, new citizens are the answer to dilute the opposition votes.
Growing the economy is the argument to convince the masses to accept the influx and is the icing on the cake. But is no more the rallying point to win votes nowadays by any means.

Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said the city state belongs to all those living here that includes permanent residents and employment pass holders and was a special place to celebrate annual festivities.

Addressing a community celebration of the Indian New Year last night, Lee said: "Singaporeans, new arrivals, people who are on permanent residence here, people who are on employment pass here, all participating in one big Singapore family... So that we feel that this is a place which is special, which belongs to all of us and where we all celebrate one another`s festivals and happy events together."
Dressed in red Kurta, Lee joined 600 residents at a community club of his constituency, tried his hand at a Thanjavur painting which was on cultural display and watched performances by classical Indian dancers.
Lee said the event was an embodiment of the theme, "Rhythms in Unity", as well as on a larger scale where everyone participates as one big Singapore family.
The Indian New Year fall on April 14 but some communities celebrate on different dates as per celebrations held in different parts of India. Singaporeans usually use weekends to celebrate on a large scale amidst multi-cultural society with one of the big celebrations held annually in the PM`s constituency.
Indian makes up about 9 per cent of over 5 million Singaporeans and those living here. Chinese accounts for 74 per cent and the Malays form 13 per cent of the population.
Past reports have noted Singaporeans having discriminated against newly arrived migrants.
But Lee`s government has emphasized the importance of new migrants for boosting the city state`s economic growth and future prosperity.
When they come here, they will be joint owners of Singapore. Singapore would belong to them.

When yours truly said that's the only way regarding MAS Chief Ravi Menon's comment about raising the SP minimum to 4.5k over time and target unfair hiring to ensure strong Singapore core, predictably some say this is just another way of continuing with CECA and others wanted a roll back of population growth. My advice is be very careful what you wish for.
In my view, we can't reverse the population growth going from 5.8m to say 4.8m. That's economic suicide. Not only will the drastic cut back in the labour force induce a fall in output, it will also raise prices at least in the short to intermediate term, As importantly, it will also induce a fall in real estate prices to an extent where there will be significant negative household equity that not only crimped current consumption hence further harming the economy but also reduce our retirement prospects given the intrinsic link between CPF and housing.
It is tempting to fall for the anti-FT rhetoric and it may work for those affected but be careful of extreme negative consequences on the rest. So, in other words, it is now far too late to even consider reducing the foreign labour force by meaningful proportion. So banish the thought. The best we can hope for is a cap in population growth thru the foreign labour force or allow a very small year on year increase.
As it stands this is likely to reduce the economy's long run growth potential but all things are not equal, in that other factors such rising wages and improved productivity may cushion or even prevent the fall in growth potential. Therefore this is why Ravi Menon's suggestion is really the only way without serious consequences for the economy. We have gone past the point of no return long ago.

China-US tension: American naval drill with dozens of F-22s ‘may be aimed at next-gen Chinese bombers’
Operation Pacific Iron 2021 will employ a high number of Raptor fighter aircraft in exercises in the Western Pacific
“We have never had this many Raptors deployed together in the Pacific Air Forces area of operations,” Wilsbach told CNN.
Retired air force lieutenant general Dan Leaf, a former deputy commander of US Pacific Command and now managing director of security consultancy Phase Minus 1, said he was not aware of a previous exercise employing F-22s in such numbers.
The F-22s are fifth-generation combat jets, the world’s most advanced fighter aircraft, incorporating stealth technology and connecting on-board sensor systems with off-board information systems to give their pilots a detailed view of the battle space.
The exercise involves more than 35 aircraft, including 10 F-15E Strike Eagles all-weather multirole strike fighters and two C-130J Hercules military transport aircraft, and more than 800 personnel, according to the US statement.
US airmen will practise skills and conduct simulated combat flight operations from local airports in Guam and Tinian.
Leung Kwok-leung, a Hong Kong-based military analyst, said the deployment of a large sortie of advanced fighters could be used to counter China’s strategic bombers.
“I think the main responsibility of deploying F-22s to the western Pacific is to prevent advanced strategic bombers, including Chinese next-generation bombers, that might carry out striking operations in the US homeland,” Leung said.
China’s mysterious next-generation strategic bomber is believed to have a stealth wing design that can help it strike targets in the and beyond.
The H-20 would be equipped with nuclear and conventional missiles, have a maximum take-off weight of at least 200 tonnes and a payload of up to 45 tonnes.
It was expected to fly at subsonic speeds and potentially fire four powerful hypersonic stealth cruise missiles.
The announcement of the naval exercise came amid growing US attention in the Indo-Pacific region, and increasing in areas from human rights to military development.
In May, the Pentagon submitted a plan to Congress outlining more than over the next six years to bolster capabilities across the Pacific region to deter China – a plan known as the – which would mostly include the establishment of forward-deployed long-range strike capabilities.
Zhou Bo, a retired senior colonel and now a senior fellow at Tsinghua University’s Centre for International Security and Strategy, said the large deployment of advanced fighter jets in a US drill near China would increase tension in the region.
“Many US drills in the Indo-Pacific region are targeted at China, and taking into consideration such a large number of fighters that would be deployed in one go, this can be seen as a message to China,” Zhou said.
“It cannot defuse regional tension at all, although it’s unlikely that this drill would result in any new accidents.”

Just came across this news on RT talking about China made drones compared to recent USA made ones.
The real startling and surprising news is that the Chinese drones are said to be 95% more effective overall than the USA self made ones. This information is from the USA military side, not China spreading propaganda, mind you.
China had been selling drones to the USA until Trump stopped it and embarked on manufacturing their own drones. This revelation of the superiority of Chinese drones indicates that the USA is now also far behind China in drone technology. Will you bet that the USA will not use reverse engineering to copy what is inside those Chinese drones? Think about it!
When the USA catches up with present Chinese drone technology, China would have gone further ahead. The next pressure point would be the USA telling allies and poodles that they cannot buy China drones due to security reasons and must buy theirs instead. This is going to be expected. When they cannot reach anyone's higher level of technology, they will pull them down to their level. That is why the USA is slipping down faster than we think.
It is also a surprise reading the reports that as recent as two to three years ago, the USA was still using Russian rocket engines in their spacecraft to launch their satellites and spacecraft with Russian engines to reach the International Space Station. Funny that before the USA and cronies started moving into the South China Sea the satellites have never detected poos in the South China Sea. Now those satellite images suddenly claimed that they could spot poos in the South China Sea and that those poos belongs to Chinese ships.
Just compare the earlier narrative claiming that they could not see the Great Wall of China from space, and now they suddenly could spot Chinese poos floating in the South China Sea. How could they be so certain that those are not actually poos discharged from the warships of the USA, Australian, British and other allies? Those were not there before, right? How convenient to push the blame onto Chinese ships.

Let them strut their stuff far away from home and see how long they can remain around the South China Sea and how it is going to affect the mental state of their sailors and the costly maintenance of their fleet in the middle of no where.
The Brits claim they are stationing their warships permanently around the South China Sea. China should just sit tight and watch and wait for those junks rusting and sank by themselves in time to come. They definitely would not dare to attack China, knowing the Chinese military, air force and navy are not that inferior to them. This is China's home ground, whereas they are in foreign territory. Away from home, they were defeated in North Korea, Vietnam, and now Afghanistan, with Iraq on the way, which in order to save face, they claim is a withdrawal.
Everybody is saying the USA has been defeated in Afghanistan and likewise in Iraq. Withdrawal is just a face saving gesture. Of course with their natural ability of denying everything, they will not admit defeat. The USA knows they can remain in Afghanistan and Iraq for another fifty years without achieving anything, except spilling blood, wasting money and dying there of old age.
