Beijing Winter Olympic Games 2022 got off to a supremely beautiful start yesterday with its Opening Ceremony held in the Beijing Birdnest Stadium. The whole event was so beautifully choreographed with AI and high tech to showcase a new and technologically advanced first world China with happy people enjoying their lives, living very well in a world clamped down by the Pandemic. Thanks to director Zhang Yimou and his creative teams of experts in this field.
The athletes from more than 100 countries and their leaders were in the Stadium celebrating a moment of peace, cooperation, mutual respect and humanity in the spirit of the Olympic Games. Everyone would have forgotten about the turmoil, wars and restrictions imposed on the rest of the people of the world while inside the serene oasis of the Birdnest Stadium. There were smiles of friendship and pride on every participant's face. It was a moment for them to be free and to share the joy of living in the prelude to the intense races and competition in the days after.
The beautiful sight of the participants in the Stadium did not come easy,all dressed to the nines in their national colours. Prior to this there were endless days and months of vicious attempts to disrupt and stop the Games from being held till the very last night. The organisers are not resting as the next 14 days would be closely monitored to protect the Games and the safety of the participants from external evil forces lurking in the corners waiting for a little slack to pounce on the athletes and the Games village.
China must have deployed several thousands of security personnel, cameras and equipment to build a safe bubble around the Games village and the competition venue, sealing them from the rest of the world, from the virus and evil forces. Every security personnel is working 24/7 and praying that the security will hold and the Games be successfully held in the next two weeks.
2008 marked the emergence of China as a super power in the Summer Olympic in the same Stadium. Yesterday confirmed China as a rich and super technological power and setting new standards in the organising of the Olympic Games. It is an act that not many could attain or exceed. It must have cost China quite a bit to put up such a wonderful display of hospitality.
Congratulations China, for the successful and amazing display of hardware and software and high technology and precision drills in the Opening Ceremony of the Winter Olympics.

And what China showcased at that time, during the Olympics, really started to evoke jealousy among the White Evils. That 2008 Olympics also showcased the progress that China had made up to just 2008. Today, in 2022, China has gone ballistic in development on infrastructure and financial muscle and how could the USA and the West let it's own people see all the changes that they were trying all the decades to hide from it's own people? And so the demonisation, the fabrication, the call to boycott the present games, picking on petty things and even reported to be paying athletes to create trouble during this Winter Games.
The USA should show some backbone to keep their diplomats away after calling on their doggies to support their attempted boycott, even though China have yet to extend invitations to them to attend. It was a mother of all snubs by Beijing, clear and simple, with the USA thinking that China will have to bend over backwards to invite them.
But the USA did not foresee China showing them the middle finger and refusing to invite them. The USA had to backtrack and even went so far as to apply for more visas to enable their diplomats to attend. The doggies, the UK and Australia in particular, were left in the lurch scratching their heads. That is how shameless the USA can be!

So this “surge” could be a catch up as folks go see their GPs after their CNY break too.
This could explain why the numbers looked flat for a few days over the weekend and into the CNY holidays. That was quite puzzling.
Typically, for the Omicron, we would see numbers shooting up fast, or coming down fast as the virus runs out of Omicron naive folks.
For instance, we would see doubling every few days, over 4 times on a weekly basis, or 10 times increase in new case numbers in 10 days.
In the early days, a rough calculation of reported Omicron would show about 3-4 times week on week. That made sense.
But then now that we can assume Omicron to be the vast majority of our cases, we are seeing weekly growth ratios of 1+ for a few weeks already.
In India for instance, they went from 4 times weekly increase in one week, to 1.7+ times the following week, to 1.2+ the 3rd week. This showed a fast slowing of growth rate.
Mumbai went from over 20+% positive test rate, down to 10+%, then to 5%, and now about 2%. A sharp rise followed by a sharp fall.
New Delhi went through the same, albeit delayed by about 1-2 weeks, even when Bangalore was rising as the virus swept to city by city across India, rippling out from the epicentre of Mumbai.
Last week, New Delhi positive test rate was down to about 10+% and declining, while Bangalore case numbers have started coming down, even as positive test rate is still over 20%.
Overall, India numbers looked like they have peaked and coming down.
However, the deaths are still climbing albeit from a low base. Fatalities were up 50%, even as new daily case numbers have started to come down.
This is bcos it takes a while for hospitalisation to track the daily case numbers. Oxygen next, and then ICU, and finally deaths.
So we should be mindful that low risk doesn’t mean no risk, and that the ICU and fatalities would lag new cases numbers by 1-3 weeks.
Hospitals in some areas of Europe and USA are full, esp in the less vaccinated or slow to boost regions.
In Sg, we seem to be having a flatter kind of curve, perhaps due to the high vaccination and boosting rates, along with various covid precautions.
So while we are still in the growth phase, the growth rate is slowing, but less sharply than we have seen elsewhere.
We should be mindful that we could see a fresh surge from the various CNY festivities, visits and reunions.
But we are also likely to see a muted surge, as many of us would self test and self isolate whenever we test ART+.
So do expect the oxygen, ICU abd fatalities to track up later, but at a much lower proportion than for the Delta wave earlier.
More CTFs are being readied to prepare for a potential post CNY surge.
Decision making is a bit hard when the outcomes are laggy.
This is like trying to adjust the hot-cold mixer for a just right balance when it takes 5 minutes for the hot water to increase or decrease.
The plus is that the Omicron risks are proportionately much smaller than for the Delta, mostly bcos of the good vaccination and boosting.
And vaccination is going well for the kids, but few have gotten their 2nd shot as yet.
For parents, they would need to balance the idea of a 2nd shot in 3 weeks for earlier filler protection, vs a better and likely longer lasting immune response if the 2nd shot is taken in 6-8 weeks.
One advantage of spacing out the 2nd dose could be fewer or milder side effects.
So depending on the choice of parents on the dosing intervals for their kids, we could see most of our young kids fully vaccinated by end Feb or end March.
For kids 5-11 years old, their dosage is 10ug, a third of the 30ug dosage for teens and adults.
And for younger infants and toddlers from 6 months to under 5 years old, we expect the trial results to be out soon. Informal reports suggest that Pfizer may be ready to submit to the USA FDA sometime next week.
This is for an even smaller dose at 3 ug, but with 3 shots.
If this baby paediatric dosing could be authorised within February, then even our young toddlers and infants could be fully vaccinated by April/May.
Babies 0-6 months would typically have antibodies from their mums either during pregnancy or through the breast milk, if their mums are already vaccinated.
So mums can protect their babies by vaccinating early too - by vaccinating before pregnancy, or even by vaccinating anytime during pregnancy.
Multiple studies have shown that vaccination doesn’t affect fertility, or the development of the babies in their wombs.
For young women, there is the possibility of their menstrual cycle being disturbed by vaccination, but these are rare and mild, typically going back to normal cycle by the next cycle. Something to bear in mind.
On fertility, while vaccination doesn’t affect fertility, covid itself could affect fertility but only for men. This too is a small effect.
Net net, we should expect much lower risk of ICU or fatalities from the Omicron.
Low risk is not no risk, and the highest risk is still driven by vaccination status - hence the USA is seeing the pandemic if the unvaccinated.
Age is the next driver for risk of ICU or death - with the boosted being the lowest risk, followed by the 2 shots mRNA, with those having Sinovac/SinoPharm being the least protected.
Keep well, and let’s be patient to keep slowing the Omicron transmission for a few weeks more, for the sake of our children, who are not yet vaccinated, and for our vulnerable seniors, teens and adults.

Biden is warning China not to back Russia in Ukraine during Putin and Xi's meeting in Beijing or face an embarrassing situation.
