A curious letter in My Paper

Teoh Kueh Liang wrote to My Paper saying 'Govt should take the lead in hiring older workers'. Now where has Teo Kueh Liang been? The govt has been taking the lead in this area for many years. Just look at the cabinet? No, not the one in the kitchen. Or look at the Istana. Or look at the board of directors of all the govt linked companies and stats boards. Then do a count on the number of oldies in them, starting from the Chairman down. The govt has been the leading light in hiring oldies all these years. It is all there for the people to see. What would be nice is to have some top jobs like Chairman and Presidents to go on a rotation, a one year term for each incumbent. Then many Singaporeans could benefit from the experience to be in such positions and would appreciate the problems the country is facing better.

I agree. When people get old and are therefore economically useless, the only institution which should be hiring them is the government

A few nights ago, my colleague, a 78 year old security guard, told me he was asked and recommended some companies(employers) to work, by some Government Agencies.

I told him(colleague) that he should work at the Prison where food, lodging and medical cares are provided and he can even learn IT if he is keen.

Would make the same recommendation to any Senior Citizens of either genders above the age of 65.

Singaporeans who want their elderly Senior Citizens to work for their own survivals in their old age are sick in the mind

All prospective Chairmans and Presidents, got OK from the regime or not to queue?

No OK or connections with the ruling party, better stay in your own cabinet at home lah. Don't waste time queueing.

A 78 year old security guard? I wonder what company wanted to hire him.

At that age probably hearing impaired, poor eyesight and slow in reacting to threats, not to mention mobility.

Must be one interesting company.

for your info, it is pretty common in SIN.

Just look at the security personnels on duties at SMRT Stations. You think they are capable of crime preventions? What a silly joke! That's the Reason why i say those who expect senior citizens to work are sick in their minds. And as National Leaders, if they expect their elderly subjects to work till they drop; You can imagine how sick our leaders must be!

I have a good solution for the oldies of Singapore. MBT told you to send them to JB, so please do what your leader says. Send them there, so it will be "Out of sight out of mind".

Great leader = Great solution

let me see what the young today will tell their grands. ah kong ah mah, why are you staying at home and 'keow kah'? go out and work and earn your keeps lah. go an make yourselves useful to society. be independent, don't have to depend on your children to feed you lah. malu you know.

Ahhhh, redbean

The young today will also grow old one day. Don't hink that all the young today will be independent when they are old. Wishful thinking, with cost of living so high today.

With cost of living so high today, and probably worse in the near future, the young today will have no choice but to work their guts out until past their retiring age. They can totally forget about retirement unless their take the courage now to emigrate to a country that can offer a better future for them and their future children.

Sinkapore leaders are not only old and sick (one of them is suffering from cancer and many others are suffering from mental self-distortion) but also very ruthless, calculative and power-hungry. And they behave like they are perfect gods or immortalized mini-gods.

The future for growing old in Sinkapore is very bleak. Better make hay while the sun shines. Emigrate.

make more millions then shall be ok. i used to think that $1m should be enough for retirement. now you will need $100m to be on the safe side.

To Anon 1213:

"emigrate"

I used to think that was the answer, and in many ways I still do. However I'm moderating my views to a more "neutral" position as I don't believe there is any country in the world today where the govt doesn't run roughshod all over the people.

You have to accept that govt interference has to be weighed up against the "benefits" of living in a particular place -- back to the old profit motive again and self interest.

To make a "profit" there is always a "cost". To "win" one's profit has to be greater than the "cost"... profit and cost here used in the overall context of one's life -- i.e. in the broadest sense possible.

Australia has a lot of faults too. However my position is that it is large enough and sparsely populated to the point where it is easy to stay under the radar and generally speaking ignore the state, whilst enjoying a decent degree of comfort, economic and personal security... the "cost" for this "profit" of course is vigilance, personal resources and the ability to remain mobile.

I'm sure one can do the same in S'pore. IMO as long as there is a viable and reasonably free market, one can enjoy a relatively high degree of comfort, security and "cushion" from state interference... but it all begins in the mind.
