China has dethroned the US to become the top alignment choice for Southeast Asians, as Washington loses ground on a range of key issues from regional economic engagement to the Israel-Hamas War, a new survey showed.
A survey of 1,994 Southeast Asians by the ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute published yesterday shows China’s popularity in a head-to-head race with the US climbing from 38.9 percent last year to 50.5 percent in 2024.
Among individual nations, Beijing garnered some three out of four votes in Muslim-majority Malaysia, Indonesia and Brunei. Taipei Times
Doesn't anyone think the result and commentary following the above survey a bit out of sync? Caveat, the survey was conducted from a sample of the elite, likely mostly western educated.
Just read the last statement, 3 out of 4 votes in Muslim-majority Malaysia, Indonesia and Brunei favoured China. This is a 75% approval rate for China. In order to counter balance this huge gap, the other countries must be voting at 70% in favour of the USA to end up with China having only a marginal advantage. Could this be the case?
Take a look at the Asean states and see who would vote in favour of America in the 70% or more? Only the Philippines could be voting overwhelmingly for the Americans. Oh, another state could possibly do the same. As for the rest, Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar would vote for China in the high 70s.The two other states left would be Thailand and Vietnam. Vietnam may be a 50:50 case. Thailand with China investing heavily in the country, with very good economic and trade relations with China, can only vote more in favour of China than otherwise.
So, can China really received a mere 50.5% favourable votes against the USA? My eyeballs are rolling. The only possibility is that the elitist western educated respondents were in the majority, and from one or two countries that are pro Americans, in absolute majority to be voting for the Americans. But even then, only two countries are on the side of the Americans. Oops, Singapore is neutral. I stand corrected. The rest of the Muslim majority states are strongly anti America, with Laos, Cambodia and Myanmar also strongly pro China. Let's say Thailand and Vietnam offset each other, the votes must come up strongly in favour of China. It cannot be just a 0.5% in favour of China.

Check the background and inclination of the people conducting and producing the survey. The wolves would said they are the good guys and the chicken are the trouble makers.

This is the kind of biased reporting seen in main media. Why should a visit to China raised eyebrows. Following this kind of twisted logic, if Prabowo were to visit the US, it would be called a good thing, a wise decision?

With 3 Muslim states strongly anti America, and 3 states strongly pro China, and only 1 or 2 states strong pro America, how can there be only 50.5% be favouring China? What kind of statistics did the survey used? The positive votes in favour of China should be at least 60%, likely 70%.
Is this survey neutral, or questionable? Do not blindly accept survey results without questioning. Look at the realities on the ground. Think and don't be fooled by surveys and go around waving the survey as the real thing. Don't be stupid, like a parrot. Garbage in, garbage out.
Many dirty tricks can be used to conduct surveys to present a slanted view of the truth.

I do not know how the survey was conducted and interpreted, but a point to note can be helpful or perhaps instrumental. The Philippines has a population of 117 million in 2023 while Vietnam also has a big population of about 98 million in 2023 and both, aside from Indonesia, have the largest population among the countries in ASEAN.
Assuming these two are totally pro-USA, that does not add up with the total population in ASEAN topping 691 million, unless Thailand or Myanmar are also anti-China totally to give such a wide support for the USA. As in the IPSOS research regarding the happiness index, maybe some form of sanitation exercise was also included in this particular survey.
Giving a higher support figure to China, which was probably the case in reality, would be making it too obvious.
Even in previous PEW survey, more than 60 percent of Singapore interviewees support China, after which PEW quietly excluded Singapore out of its survey . . .
Maybe the sample size was much bigger. But they rejected those they did not like to see and kept those they liked.
The next few days you will see some silly reporters or so called analysts quoting this questionable survey like blind believers, like it is the gospel truth, exposing their ignorance and naivity.
Just hope no ministers would open their mouth to support this survey.

I always take survey of any kind with a spoonful of salt. In sinkieland, a survey of a thousand or hundred people will result in "most" sillyporean support this or that(when we have 3million citizen). The most laughable survey is the one on happiness of a country population. We should just be ourselves and not be too influence by any survey.

That surveys are now using the old formula used by political parties, which we call 'gerrymandering' and that says a lot about their trustworthiness. Surveys are meant to convince and sway thinking with true facts and figures, but now we know what they actually are.
Facts and figures can be manipulated, parts added on or taken off to present a totally fake outcome. Truth goes out of the window.
Little wonder more and more skeptics are growing and getting smarter and more critical in their thinking. You can't fool everybody every time.
