Hong Kong - A festering wound turning cancerous

More violence on the streets of Hong Kong.  More burning, arson, fighting and more deaths are on the card. Anti rioting citizens beaten or burnt by the rioters. Rioter shot by the police. The recipe for violence against the police and govt of Hong Kong continues unabated and getting more and more destructive, and deadly.

What is the main difference between this violent protest and the historical protests against the colonial govt, against foreign invaders? In this Hong Kong case, the rioters are not protesting to drive out foreign invaders and colonialists, they are rioting to break free from China, to become a new state, a separatist movement.

The reality and practicality of such a movement is ludicrous. Hong Kong cannot survive on its on as a separate entity economically. The next reality is that Hong Kong is an integral part of China, just like Taiwan and Macau. A strong and unified China has no reason to let Hong Kong break away and is able to resist any foreign intervention to wrestle Hong Kong away from China.

China has many cards to play and foreign conspirators and agitators at most could only give lip service and no direct military, financial or any kind of support without facing the wrath of China. The ridiculous violent nature of the protest, the threats to life and property, could be put to an equally violent end should China choose to do so but not willing to do so to avoid more death of its own people. Is this a bigger evil than to let the unthinking youths and their unthinking supporters to continue to run amok in Hong Kong?

China can wait for as long as Hong Kong is allowed to burn itself down. The rioters, terrorists and arsonists could go on to destroy Hong Kong as a viable economy, turn it into a war zone. As long as the problem is contained in Hong Kong, Hong Kong can be dragged into a bottomless pit by the rioters for as long as they so chose. There is no sympathy for the thoughtless and mindless Hongkongers who think they could break Hong Kong away from China. Such naivety of the Hong Kong people is laughable.

In the meantime China would just wait it out and let Hong Kong burn itself out. Hong Kong would become a cancerous open wound that would be allowed to waste away.  At the rate it is going, it would not take long before the Hong Kong house collapses on its own. Hong Kong would have to be destroyed, by the Hongkongers, before it is rebuilt to be an inalienable part of China.

Let there be more violence and more killings. Let the rioters and terrorists attacked and killed more policemen and Hongkoners that don't agree with them. Only then could China come in to wipe the killers and murderers out of Hong Kong. Violence would be met with violence. China is letting the world witness how destructive and deadly are the Hong Kong terrorists before moving in to shoot them on sight.

Let it burn, let Hong Kong burn to the ground, by the stupid an unthinking Hongkongers.

Another five months of violence, HK will collapse - lock, stock and barrel - if China does not help.

Democracy in hk means only one voice by the black shirts. If u disagreed u will be beaten or even killed. It's dictatorship to the extreme so it's really laughing stock of the world.

@ Hong Kong will prevail

The protesters have already "won" one of their 5 demands---the suspension/ eradication of the Extradition Bill.

So they have 4 more to go. And it'll take sometime and there is more suffering and sacrifice to be endured.

Hong Kong can collapse into a heap of smouldering rubble and in a matter of years they'll be back as one of the world's most dynamic cities and vibrant economies.

Of course, no civilian uprising can win against a well-trained and well-armed military force like the PLA. However if Xi did send the PLA to shoot HK protesters, my prediction is that there will be assassination attempts on him personally as "revenge".☠️⚰️ HK people can be real "gangsta", and Cantonese culture has a hard "never give up" quality to it.

Dun play "dirty" with Cantonese. They will fuck you back. Guaranteed! πŸ†

Bananas made Hong Kong great. They will make Hong Kong great again.

Singapore owes a lot of its success to the Peranakan Bananas.

Common denominator: Both Singapore & HK were British Colonies. Their legacy was a huge squirt of Ang Mo Tua Kee sperm into the DNA of our respective societies which forever implanted ideas of "individual freedom", "civil liberties", "rule of law rooted in "English Common Law", "market-based open economies"....and everything else the BANANAS have embraced in our conservative Asian cultures.

If there were no Bananas, there will be no modern Singapore or Hong Kong.

Put those FACTS in your pipe and smoke it, mate! πŸ₯‚πŸ€ŸπŸ‘―‍♀️

Goola Warden 13/11/2019, 2:30pm
SINGAPORE (Nov 13): Alarming news that a Christmas tree was set on fire at Festival Walk caused unit price in Mapletree North Asia Commercial Trust to fall. Festival Walk contributed $104.9 million or 61.7% to MNACT’s net property income of $169.8 million in 1HFY2020 the six months to Sept 30. On Nov 13, MNACT’s manager announced that the mall has been closed for operations since 2 pm on Nov 12 amid city-wide disruptions and the manager will update on developments. Since Nov 7, MNACT’s unit price is down 8%.
Sister real estate investment trust Mapletree Logistics Trust’s Hong Kong properties contributed 23.4% to 2QFY2020 (three months to Sept 30) gross revenue of $127.5 million. Logistics properties are not very visible.
However, Bloomberg carried a news item that nine OCBC Wing Hang branches were closed on the morning of Nov 13 because of traffic disruptions. OCBC Wing Hang contributes 9% to Oversea-Chinese Banking Corp’s operating profit for the nine months to Sept 30.
SCMP has reported that several banks have had their ATMs vandalised and some have closed branches in recent weeks, including Bank of China (Hong Kong).
DBS Group Holdings has meaningful operations in Hong Kong, with DBS Hong Kong contributing some 20% to net profit. Hongkong Land’s Hong Kong properties including some of the choicest Grade A office buildings contribute 56% to its operating profit.
Elsewhere, Wing Tai Holdings owns 34.3% in Hong Kong-listed Wing Tai Properties which contributes meaningfully to the locally listed developer’s bottomline. For FY2019 (Wing Tai Holdings has a June year end), Wing Tai Properties contributed around $33.7 million to profit before tax.
Other less well-known names have also significant presence in Hong Kong. Biolidics (see table) designs and manufactures medical devices. Azeus Systems Holdings provides information technology products and services. CDW Holding manufactures and supplies precision components.

@ jigg

Yeah, I read the same shit you do. But it is obvious we construct different meanings. After seeing the world come to the brink a few times, and survive...what's happening in HK is small potatoes lah.

Long Term Capital Management (LTCM) collapsed back in 1998. They had leveraged-up so much many ex-spurts believed there wasn't enough money to cover the losses. Then Russia defaults, and then the Asian Currency Crisis. Then the US Tech Bubble collapse in 2001. A few years later: SARS, and a few years after that: The Mother-Of -All financial meltdowns the GFC.

Every one of those "incidents" was portrayed as a global extinction event by the THE MAINSTREAM MEDIA WHO THRIVES ON GLOOM AND DOOM....and yet, here we are, wealthy, happy, getting fat, comfortable and talking cock...even though at the back of our minds there looms the possibility of another market collapse or rout in the over-extended debt markets. Why worry about something beyond your control, which may or may not happen?

Great, well-managed, well-capitalized strong public companies can survive events that will take those who are less strong. The market is a brutal weighing machine...that's the nature of CAPITALISM. Do you worry if the HDB prices fall? Of course not. The value of your HDB can drop 40 or 50%, but your HDB doesn't "disappear"...it is still there. You still have a roof over your head.

So a few buildings in a REIT or a bank get walloped. So what? It isn't as if a nuclear bomb went off to destroy every building in the REIT. or bank's holdings People being naturally fearful will SELL at the slightest hint of "collapse", even though that risk asset still has lots of value. That's great because it presents an OPPORTUNITY for those who SEEK VALUE....to buy severely undervalued prime assets at BARGAIN BASEMENT prices i.e. "buying $10 notes for $5".

War Stocks Guy has been harping and harping about buying into a depressed market at 2008/ 2009. Markets go up and down, and when they go down, QUALITY ASSETS get so "hated" that "fearful" people start throwing them away.

I like to thank the mainstream media for scaring the shit out of people. Keep doing what you're doing, my dear MSM! πŸ€“

Ref: 1) Chapter 8 , The Intelligent Investor by Benjamin Graham: "Mr Market"
2) The Most Important Thing by Howard Marks

Anyway, for me, I must put my money where my mouth is. I don't believe DBS, Wing Tai or Mapletree North Asia Commercial Trust are going to go belly up and die, and when I think the price is right, and my research indicates "value", I will PULL THE TRIGGER.

Please lah, these are VERY STRONG enterprises and are diversified, not just concentrated in HK. Asia is the most populated place on earth with significantly upwardly mobile societies, with solid work ethic and a culture of THRIFT. Good for banks, good for property lah. πŸ’ͺπŸ½πŸ’°πŸ’°

@Matilah, @all,

Below is a nice summary table of SGX-listed stocks with exposure to HK:-

https://atans1.files.wordpress.com/2019/11/sgx-listedhongkong.jpg?w=1000&h=

Note that Mapletree NAC Trust is basically flat YTD as of 14 Nov 2019 --- i.e. the price hasn't really cratered YET.

MNAC enjoyed a +28% zoom up this year up to July (together with most other REITs) --- what I had previously described as ridiculously Too Much Too Fast & overvalued.

Those counters with big losses tend to be those with structural business weakness already BEFORE the HK riots e.g. Dairy Farm (poor & unprofitable supermarket operations) and Hutchison Port Holdings Trust (poor port operations due to shenzhen competition & trade war & slowing global trade).

As for those who don't believe War Stocks are at or near All Time Highs...

Take a look at the chart for the war stocks ETF below:
http://schrts.co/MCkDxZeB

@Matilah,

You've recently taken a small position in ITA, so you should be having some small profits! Congrats!!!

That said, my believe is that over the next 10-20 years, Asia & Emerging Markets which have greatly underperformed against US War Stocks & Tech Stocks over the past 10 years .... Will start to outperform due to low base effects, low valuations, higher growth potentials, demographics, and plain old mean reversion.

Hence any major new investments for me will largely into Asia, including China Tech Stocks. This HK Riots & Trump Trade War is basically helping me to buy good quality stuff at a BIG discount!!!

THANK YOU TRUMP!!!!

Thanks. Although I try not to get too excited. No profit taken. Just gains. I bought around 200, added a bit more at 210. And yes, thanks for the "heads up". I'm still "nervous" about markets having being burnt badly (my own fault) in the past.

No Robinhood in Australia, but there's a local shop, like Robinhood with 0% commission called Stake, specially designed for Aussies who trade US markets... and they're great!

Anyway, I appreciate the links you post about the local scene. I'm still a newbie when it comes to SGX and Asia in general, and I too feel that emerging markets have a lot of "value" locked up waiting to explode to the upside.

I don't know if you are aware, but there's a new book about the super-secretive math genius Jim Simons (best trader/ investor ever---66% annualized, beats Buffet, Lynch, Dalio...everyone). It's called "The Man Who Solved The Market" by Gregory Zuckerman. I've just started reading.

Cheers, keep on posting!

@Matilah,

Oh by profits I meant gains. No way should you be trading in & out for short term profits. ;)

Yeah Jim Simons & Medallion Fund / Renaissance Technologies.

Unfortunately to play his arena you'd need to have PhD in math/physics or pay him HNW fees (crazy 5 and 44 !!!).

There's a recent article by the author of the book & he summarises some main points:-

https://www.marketwatch.com/story/turn-yourself-into-a-better-investor-by-learning-from-hedge-fund-star-jim-simonss-successes-and-failures-2019-11-07

The big takeaway is that Simons focuses on short term trades. As average investors we can still win big by (1) taking the long view, (2) controlling emotions & developing matured temperament (unlike virgo and 99% of losers on this blog LOL!!!), and (3) always be learning, knowing that we don't know.

Hong Kong used to be an important financial hub for China. It still is, but with rioters turned terrorist burning down and chasing away foreign businesses, it may soon no longer be of significance to China.

The rich have fled after enriching themselves through the blood and sweat of the older Hong Kong generation, leaving Hong Kong now a shallow shell of its heydays. Why would China want to interfere now after so long, instead of letting Hong Kong burn itself out. Isn't non interference the watchword of the West all along?

China is in fact playing the waiting game of watching how the silent majority, who are against the rioting and destruction, will take the strain for another couple of months, and see who is going to blink first - the rioters or those who want to go on with their normal lives.

These rioters initially thought that mainland Chinese will support them in their call for their uprising against China, but when that failed to materialise, the result is that they started attacking mainland Chinese and destroying Chinese companies doing business in Hong Kong. How seriously and easily they have been misled, and how wasted their years of education that have not taught them to see things in a more rational way, unlike those uneducated which would be excusable.

Most people supporting the rioters do not take note of the fact that Hong Kong is already the No. 3 country in the world in terms of human freedom, far ahead of the UK or the US. And that ranking comes after Hong Kong returned to China. Is that not ironic? What kind of freedom does the rioters want? The can migrate to the UK or US to ask for total freedom, wearing masks, setting fires, burning train stations, destroying Government buildings and malls and see what happens.

@All,

Below is what I will say is the typical reaction of mainstream people towards HK. And also the reaction of many millennials who are hard striving & take personal responsibility, towards investment opportunities thrown up by "blood in the streets".

These are the millennials that convinces me that the next 10-20 years will be GREAT FOR WEALTH BUILDING as the millennial generation gets into their peak earning & spending years.

Quest For Knowledge

The more I learn, the more I know.
The more I know, the more I know I don't know.
And the more I know I don't know, the more I want to know.

I make conclusions after conclusions, ninety-nine times they ended up false,
The hundredth time I am proven to be right.

With deep reflections from daily life, one knows one exists for others.
It is inter-dependence that makes life interesting and suucessful, not independence.

The most important thing in life is not to stop questioning oneself.
The moment one stops questioning oneself, one becomes over-confident, and arrogance takes over.

When arrogance rules the thought, speech, feeling and action, one is as good as a statue, standing tall and proud upon a high pedestal, serving as an artificial monument to remind tourists that he is history.

Questioning should never stop, for it is the brainchild of learning.
The more I learn, the more I question because I realise there are so much that I still don't know!

On November 14, local time, when President Xi Jinping attended the eleventh meeting of BRICS leaders in Brasilia, he indicated China's current situation in Hong Kong.

The government has a solemn position. The persistent violent criminal acts in Hong Kong have seriously trampled on the rule of law and social order, seriously undermined Hong Kong's prosperity and stability, and seriously challenged the bottom line of the "one country, two systems" principle. Stopping the storm and restoring order is Hong Kong's most urgent task at present. We will continue to firmly support the Chief Executive to lead the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region in accordance with the law, firmly support the Hong Kong Police in law enforcement, and firmly support the Hong Kong Judiciary in punishing violent criminals. The determination of the Chinese government to safeguard national sovereignty, security, and development interests is unshakable. The determination to implement the "one country, two systems" principle is unwavering, and the determination to oppose any outside forces' interference in Hong Kong affairs is unwavering. Stopping the storm and restoring order is Hong Kong's most urgent task at present.
