Volte face in nuclear ambition

After spending some little money to retain some nuclear experts to explore the possibilities of building a nuclear power plant in the island the govt has officially stated its position that given the current technology, nuclear is NG. The main consideration is safety of the people and no one in the world except a nuclear snake oil seller will tell you that nuclear is safe to use in a little island with a radius of not more than 20km. Really, you don’t need a nuclear expert to tell you this. An intelligent schoolboy or layman would have seen this through and through.

And the Fukushima Incident only confirmed that the risk is for too high to take. An incident would make the island out of bound, and if serious, for decades or centuries. The govt insists that the Fukushima Incident has nothing to do with its decision to put the nuclear option in the back burner. It must have been seriously thought through and recommended by the experts who were still bragging about how safe nuclear power stations were quite recently and suddenly decided that it is not safe for this island.

It definitely has no relationship with the new target of a population of 6m that makes going nuclear less critical. A 10m or more population will mean that nuclear is the only option as the power consumption would have tip the scale over safety consideration. It will become a necessity, a no option, no choice must have source of energy.

It definitely has nothing to do with the outcry in the media, main and social media, about the big gamble of death if the island were to go nuclear. Would the govt listen to unintelligent people writing to the press to change its mind on such a technical issue? Definitely not the noises from the wilderness of the cyber world.

The people must be thankful that the govt is made up of hard thinking, logical and objective super talents that could see the danger of going nuclear and intelligently decided to say no. If the govt is made up of less intelligent people, it would be nuclear with all the great advantages of clean fuel and cheaper cost.

Thank God that the people need not have to live above a nuclear radiator that could be cooking them without them knowing and be safe from a future generation of mutants.

If you were to just search, there are many type of nuclear energy rather than just blow H bomb away type.

Agreed the decision is correct but is due to the fears rather than the reality.

You should look up pebble bed reactors or thorium based.

without cheap energy on demand, things will progressively be extremely violatile

Only a total idiot will believe that nuclear (uranium) energy is totally safe. Modern reactors are safER than their predecessors for sure. But if you want to live in a world/ universe where things are "absolute" and "certain" then you need to take more drugs to get evn higher than you are now, because your level of self-delusion isn't optimum yet.

I'm skeptical about thorium too. Yes, the thorium fuel cycle is far more conducive to the perpetuation of human life. However no one (i.e. NOT ONE) has produced a thorium reactor which is commercially viable yet. So whatever is said now is pure speculation.

France is building a HUGE EXPERIMENTAL fusion reactor. Again, we'll have to "wait and see" how the future turns out.

Everyone will continue to fight and bicker about energy policy. In the meantime, fossil fuel -- dirty, corrupt, war-driven fossil fuels -- will make up the bulk of our energy supply, with some green idiots placing solar panels on their roofs whilst they strum their guitars, smoke pot and engage in "free love" in their hippie communes below.

Got kumbaya?

Agreed, Onion, thorium is the way to go. Countries like Japan and other nuclear-power-wannabes went for Uranium because its by-products can be used as weapon material.

Anonymous said...

I think they have not done away entirely with the idea of a nuclear power plant here as their decision is subject to review sometime in the not too distant future when nuclear technology has made further improvements safety wise. This is what I understand from press reports.

Chua Chin Leng aka redbean said...

I also doubt that thorium reactors are safety proof. They still produce radioactive material.

The crazy truth is that many crazy country leaders would not want thorium reactors. What they really want is uranium and the insane desire to be able to make nuclear bombs. Japan is one of such liars that used the pretext of nuclear energy to acquire material to make nuclear bombs.

The third world countries are all harbouring the grandeur dreams of becoming nuclear powers, in the military sense, to possess nuclear bombs.

Nothing is or can be "completely safe". Modern air travel is safe. However one in awhile, an aircraft will fall out of the sky killing everyone on board and people on the ground. That's life.

Got probability?

P.S. I fully support Turd Whirled Cuntrees -- especially the ones run by corrupt dick-tators ruling by religious doctrine over stupid myth-believing citizens -- to have uranium/ plutonium based nuclear energy/ weapons programs.

There fuckers provide the volatility and uncertainty necessary to propel the entertainment value of geo-politics, as it keeps the rest of humanity on edge.

Humans are hilarious.

Thorium reactors are as safe as our CPF monies.
One big pile of money.
Just sitting there waiting for greedy government administrators to start levying you charges for the privilege of using your own money to pay for things like your medical expenses and polyclinic charges.

Anonymous said...

Thorium technology is so good.
None of the developed countries even want to start a commercial reactor.
You want thorium reactors?
The leading experts in thorium technology are China and India.

Nuclear energy.
One more very good reason to vote Opposition.

Because they have other agendas. Like enriched uranium and plutonium - good for nukes.

Why didn't the US and Detroit in particular continued with electric cars? The US was the pioneer in electric cars in the 60s, but the initial research was thwarted by vested interest and the strong lobby against it by the oil giants. If the US had persisted with electric car development, it would have beaten the Japanese in producing commercially viable electric cars much earlier.

Likewise, US has abandoned thorium research very early on as the uranium route is what the military wanted. Which is why China and India are the leaders now.

Why go for thorium when uranium can yield weapon grade by-products?

Thorium may produced but it is localised.
If you are concerned as such, than there should be no Xray machines/MRI/CAT machines/Microwaves as there is radiation under scientific definition.
Further, if a gas powered/fuel powered, there is also danger.
The key issue is that margin of safety

Chua Chin Leng aka redbean said...

Hi theonion. If there is any concern about radiation it must be something similar to those caused by the uranium reactor. If it is something similar to Xray machine, no bother will bother. And if the risk of accident is like aircraft accident, no one will make any noise as they are acceptable risks.

The unacceptable risk is to lock out the whole island for years. There is no comparison between this kind of risk and other conventional risks.

You PAP internet trolls, like your PAP masters, know nuts about electric cars.
It's the vast network of petrol stations throughout the length and breadth of USA stupid.
When you can replace that with a vast network of electric refilling stations, your electric car will succeed.

There is no conspiracy in USA.
The only conspiracy is the vast Pro Alien Conspiracy in Singapore.

So hybrid cars will succeed.
Electric cars will not.

More than 10 years ago, i tried to save the Singapore government money by telling the truth about electric cars.
But the dumbass MIWs only wanted to hear how green the elctric car was versus the petrol car.
Result. A whole bunch of grant monies was wasted.

Anonymous said...

How much grant monies have been spent on "thorium" feasibility studies in Singapore to date?

Like the electric cars in the past ....

That is exactly my point. The electric car in the US was killed by oil giants and the US car manufacturers. Detroit cars are gas guzzlers which is good for oil business.

Likewise, electric cars are unlikely to take off in Singapore as Shell and other oil majors have invested billions and they are not going to keep quiet. Just look at CNG - only 2 or 3 stations for the whole of Singapore.

Wonder if any funding is coming from India and China;
to our thorium lobbyists;
to promote 3rd world nuclear technology at 1st world prices?
