The significance of Hong Lim Spring

Has anything changed after 16 February? Was the attendance at the protest rally loud enough to be heard by the Govt? Did the Govt hear or want to hear the voices of the people, its citizens, the people that voted them to power, the people that voted the MPs to parliament to represent their interests, to speak out for them?

The 77 MPs that voted for the White Paper, did they vote because the Party told them to vote, or did they vote because that was what the people wanted them to vote for? If they are voting against the will of the people, are they going to stick to it and go along with the recommendations in the White Paper? Or would they reflect and want to reconsider their duties to the people in parliament, whether they should rescind their votes and act to have the White Paper thrown out as the people wanted them to do so?

The main issue now is about representing the people or betraying the trust of the people. What would these MPs do? What would the Govt do now that the people have vehemently spoken out against what it wanted to do? Would the Govt continue its deaf frog way, do what it thinks is right and ignore the wishes of the people?

Assuming that the 77 MPs just buat bodoh, no, we didn’t see anything or hear anything, what is Hong Lim Spring or protest all about? Was there a protest? And nothing changes, that they did not want to do anything, what are the people going to do about it or can do about it? Similarly, if the Govt continues to pursue the things it set out to do in the White Paper, what can the people do about it?

Would there be any substantial changes from the Govt following Hong Lim? Would the people rise to the occasion to challenge the Govt not to pursue what the people did not want it to do?

Would things remain the same, things as per normal, business as per normal with the Govt and the ministers and MPs going about their lives as if nothing really happen? The best part is that the Govt could simply ignore whatever happened at Hong Lim, show no respect to the wishes of the people. The Govt not only knows best but has all the power to do as it pleases.

How significant are the Singaporeans that rallied on the 16 Feb 2013?

Acting Minister Chan Chun Sing said in CNA News Reporting that the Reaction from the People to the Population Whire Paper is expected.

In the Same report, it was announced that the unused Guillemard Camp will be developed in anticipation of the Planned Population Enhancement.

Based on the Above-said, the demonstration at HLP was as good as not had taken place.

Sheer arrogance for a young man to take Sinkies for granted. Sinkies have had their blinkers removed and will henceforth vote only those who would represent them and their interests.

Fucking Indian want preferential treatment in Singapore

The step has irked India as the new law does not give India a preferential treatment incorporated in the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CECA) between the two countries, operational since 2005. This stance by the Singapore Government is expected to affect Indians working as middle-level managers, executives and technicians.

Speculations are rife that India might take up the issue with World Trade Organization’s (WTO) dispute settlement body. However, according to Singapore such a decision was imperative in the interest of the natives as the share of the foreign workforce is rising very rapidly.

....

According to Indian officials involved in the negotiations, this is a violation of the services trade agreement under CECA. This will also adversely affect Indians who are working there as it might lead to job losses, especially for the middle level workers.

The CEFA between SG and India is a shot in our own foot. PAP sold us out so much that, today, any claims to our due rights will incur the resentment of shit Indian racist.

Few years down the road, Indians will think that it is entitlement that our sons and daughter become shit collector and prostitute just like what they did to their own dalits.

Then any protest from the native Singaporean will be treated as Singaporean Nazi.

Hi Veritas, hope you don't mind and don't sound too racist. Let's not take a too racist position as, like you said, other than the brahmins, there are many Indians that are also victims of the caste system.

Cheers.

Sorry RB.

I just felt angry. To be frank, I do not think I am racist.

I do not hate people just because of their skin color and languages. I was in Iran, who is 99% same gene as Brahmins.

I was mugged by Iranian, and even got a few cut here and there. That do no make me hate Iranian, on the contrary, I like them. USA hate them.

When I was in Europe, I got into trouble with blacks in Paris. I resent them a little, not because of race, but just like other yellow people, our resentment of blacks are mostly due to us as a victim of their crime.

I think yellow somehow think lowly of blacks, that is understandable if you live in western country and become victims of violent crime.

I do not hate Japan just because they killed so many Chinese.

I do not hate Russian, but I remember and wary what this people has done in Siberia.

Before 2000, I am neutral on Indian. After that, seeing what they have done, I just feel angry.

I am in a comfortable economics position. But I feel I need to speak out.

If any Indians can say "fuck caste system", or can stand up and condemn those crooks in Citibanks, I would have better opinions.

Till now, Indians have not done their soul searching. Trust me, Indians will try to see how much they can get from you. You got to tell them when to stop.

Awakening Singaporeans about this fact is not racist. Indians are racist.

Thanks for the explanation Veritas. It is unavoidable that some readers will feel offended by your comments and I can't blame them. It is just how we expressed ourselves and the angle we take. Sometimes it cuts very deeply.

Cheers.

redbean: "Hong Lim Spring"? Are you sure or not?

More people attend Zouk or St James Power Station or MBS casino daily than the one-wet-afternoon turnout at Hong Lim lah.

Keep it in perspective.

I give it 10/10 for effort, but 2/10 for effectiveness. Today it's "business as normal" -- people more concerned that Lee Kuan Yew discharged in hospital...I mean discharged FROM hospital ;-)

>> The best part is that the Govt could simply ignore whatever happened at Hong Lim, show no respect to the wishes of the people

Ahem. I don't think you can call 3000-6000, even 10,000 "the people". The best you can muster would be "some people".

In reality, the better known "exclusive" clubs of Singapore have membership numbers in excess of the turnout at Hong Lim.

Got proper measuring stick?

Let me give you some perspective. When a gathering of 4 is illegal assembly, a gathering of 5,000 is something. Malaysia has a population of nearly 30m. A 30,000 rally is 0.1%. We have 3.3m citizens, 5,000 rally is more than 0.1%.

Want more perspective? 5.3m population, head of govt's salary how much? How much is the head of govt of the USA with 250m people getting? Now that is perspective.

Small potatoes lah.

Nothing of any significance whatsoever. Like a fart in a hurricane.

But don't believe me. There is little doubt that you'll continue to delude yourself, for my entertainment ;-)
