Do we want to be a City of immigrants forever?

The White Paper has touched on very serious issues about nation building, about nationhood and citizenship on one side and economic growth on the other. It seems that in the name of economic growth, everything can be compromised, even reducing the Sinkie core to an ever smaller number. There was no policy statement as to how many people should be housed in this island and what is the right mix between citizens and foreigners. And the term citizen is so corrupted that many are simply foreigners given a pink IC.

The number of people in the island and the composition of citizens are of paramount importance to the true blue Sinkies as this is their only home. They would not want to become boat people or be forced out of their home island by the influx of foreigners who took on the façade of citizenship.

Where is the dialogue between the Govt and people on these two important issues? Would the Govt initiate a discussion with the people? Would the 77 or 80 elected MPs want to consult with the 3.3m people on these? Or the farce of passing the White Paper be enough to seal the fate of the 3.3m and that’s it, there is nothing more to say?

If the Govt thinks that there is nothing else to talk to the people, is there anything else that the people can do before 2016? By the look of things, the only time the people can say no to the Govt on these issues will be 2016. In the meantime they can cry and kpkb, have more protest rallies in Hong Lim, the 77/80 MPs will not listen and will just do what they set out to do, to bring in more immigrants and to reduce the Sinkie percentage to 55% or lower.

What is the Natcon for? What is this talk about engaging the people, talking and listening to the people? Can the 77/80 MPs feel the disquiet?

Depending on the Outcome of the Next GE in 2015/16, 6.9 millions in population could be realized by 2021, in time for the following General Election in 2021/22.

Hi Redbean....

Was at Hong Lim too.

I come to the conclusion that economics via immigration is more critical than citizenship/being Singaporean/etc....as after all being a Singaporean is only a "spirit" and the national pledge is also only an aspiration.

6.9 will be totally Singaporean in "spirit" and therefore "Singaporeans" like you and me.

The classical notion of Singapore being a state ( as opposed to a hub of classical citizens/transients/global FT's ) has surely been put aside )

One untold reason why gov wants more foreigners cos they are more willing to take risks and cooked their accounts. They always have their home countries to fall back on if they screwed up in sinky. Sinkies always have to play safe cos even gov is not on our side. A lot of acounts under foreign third world management are too creative for anyone.

Do we want to have a PAP government forever?

We do not want also cannot cos the election dept is on their side.

I feel totally betrayed when this "leader" says we must welcome all immigrants. After staying 10 years in the Orchard road big garden, he thought Sg is super spacious.

[Measuring cost-of-living changes: MTI replies]

"THE article ('Poorest households hardest hit by inflation', Feb 6) noted that if imputed rentals on owner-occupied accommodation (OOA) are excluded from the CPI, inflation for lower-income households last year would be lower than that for other groups.

However, the article also cited views that 'CPI-All Items' provides a better picture of cost-of-living changes than the measure excluding imputed rentals on OOA, since rentals and mortgages are significant expenditures.

Allow us to clarify.

It doesn't matter. Every human is biologically the same, so there's really no difference between "local" and "foreign" except that the foreigner had to travel to physically be in Singapore.

Why the government hasn't used this SCIENTIFIC FACT to their defence is beyond me.

There will always be flow of immigrants. The issue is how many.

If it is base of having to cover labour short fall due to below replacement birth rate.

One must ask the total number PR and non PR are how many.

Also one must aware that birth rate affect the future but immediate,
meaning labour force shortage due to 1.2% birth rate effect can be seen 20yrs later.
So import foreign labour now is to solve??
because those entering the market now are those coming those born from 90s.
Then Singapore fertility rate is 1.8.

If so, the intake already well exceed.
If this is an oversighted, one must question
can we half their pay now

There is a trend in human migration to move to the cities. This is a global thing, not confined to Asia or Singapore.

In India and China, the swa tengs are moving off the farms, getting themselves educated. Armed with these new skills, for their own betterment, they are moving to the cities...that was the first "phase". Now their progress is in another phase, many of them are venturing to places where their skills have "a market".

Singapore is such a place. There is probably no business or government stat board that can run these days without foreign labour.

Singaporeans themselves have been using foreign labour for YEARS -- I'm talking about maids.

The use of domestics servants is CULTURAL in Singapore. We have them. So did our forebears. Remember the "black and whites". Or the very strong, hardworking Chinese female labourers whose back-breaking and often thankless work built the infrastructure and the private properties of early modern Singapore?

Singaporeans are OK if they have the foreign labourers under their thumbs. Now when foreigners come to replace and directly compete with Singaporeans, the spoilt brat WIMPY Singaporeans cannot take it.

Got strength of character? Or are you waiting for the government to "save" you?
