REACH – 9 in 10 support tighten foreign workers
‘REACH announced today (18 Mar) that in a telephone poll, close to 9 in 10 of respondents were supportive of measures to tighten foreign worker inflow.’ This is the findings of the Govt feedback website. What is laughable is that though a tightening of foreign workers is desirable, it misses the main issue of the citizen’s pain. It is not foreign workers that the Singaporeans are angry about. It is jobs at the PMET level that qualified and experienced local PMETs have been booted out and replaced by foreigner that really matters. While the people were kpkb about foreign talents, the Govt apparently refused to engage on this and kept talking about foreign workers when many of the jobs at these level were shunned by the locals. The local PMETs want to be employed and are angry for being replaced.
In another article by Reuter, I quote, ‘Citigroup (C.N), the largest banking employer in Singapore, said more than 80 percent of its nearly 10,000 staff in the city-state were Singapore citizens or permanent residents.’ This is likely the case in many banks including local banks. Even Jollibee when faced with a boycott, sang the same song, that 79% of its employed are Singaporeans and PRs. What is the problem with these statements? PRs are not citizens, not Singaporeans. How many of these employed are Singaporeans? The statistics must be broken down to reflect the actual number or percentage of Singaporeans that are employed at PME level. The country does not belong to PRs.
The Govt must be serious in tackling this discrimination against Singaporeans in the work place. Two things the Govt can do, 1, imposed a quota on Singaporeans versus others at PME level, and 2, all GLCs and Govt agencies, including ministries must hire a Singaporean to head the HR dept or division. This is to ensure more transparency and to protect Singaporean interests. These are the minimum the Govt can do to protect its citizens. If the Govt cannot even do this, it has failed in is duty to protect its people and it is time for a change of Govt.
Following these, the MOM and Tafep must investigate and take the errant employers to task with heavy fines and curtailing their privileges to hire foreigners. Forget about the shit that foreign companies will scoot and move out from this city. Hiring foreigners is only a small part of the whole picture of the attractiveness of Singapore as a business centre and HQ. There are many anecdotes of foreign companies bringing in inexperience young graduates to be trained by the locals and subsequently be promoted to boss over the same locals.
The whole employment policies on hiring foreign talents at PME and top management level need an overhaul. We cannot keep filling these positions with foreigners, including PRs, and hollow out our local talent pool. Eventually no local talents can fill these positions. The Govt is doing the people a disservice if this is allowed to continue like it is now.

It's all about money, as our govt is famous for. They "teh gong" when pressured to reduce foreigners, and deliberately reduced foreign workers at the low levels instead of reducing the mid level PMETs. Why you may ask ? Simply because mid level foreigners earn more and therefore contribute more tax to the greedy govt !

>> The country does not belong to PRs.
The cuntry doesn't belong to anyone. the cuntree is controlled by The State.
Private businesses however belong to their OWNERS who can hire and fire personnel to suit their plans.
They do not have to "justify" any quotas so make a few uncompetitive fools and their loud-mouthed political opportunists "happy".
yes the country is controlled by the State and the people can control the state.
Private busines may be owned by their owners but they don't operate in a vacuum. The state can regulate the private owners and they can leave if they so choose. Every country regulate their private businesses.
Here the first priority is govt and state and govt linked busineses, within the control of the state.
Enjoy the wayangs by the state and its' media lah.
Daft Sinkies will remain daft till they are able to replace their manipulator, the regime.
RB. You are right. When we think government is doing its best effort to correct the situation, they are actually hitting the wrong nail. We asked that government review PMET jobs meant for Singaporeans but the government kept pushing out manual workers and complain to the world that because of people's demand, they have no choice but to cause businesses to incur additional costs and project delays. Again it is our fault.Clever ploy right?
They hit the wrong nail and yet it ended up 'our fault', lol.
Who is daft?
Feedback has always been against the influx of migrants into Singapore. Why did the decision makers suddenly wake up over the night? Strange!! Remedial measure to bring back the trust of the people? Probably yes, but don't get carried away...
RB, gd post. One kopi for you.

>> the people can control the state.
In theory they can. In reality they seldom do. The default case: They Don't. The default in reality is: The State controls The People.
>>

Private businesses operate as PRIVATE PROPERTY of the owners.
>> Every country regulate their private businesses.
They can try, and of course do. Again, too much regulation will kill business or chase them away. In business "no profit, no point".
The bigger the business, the more "clout" is has on the government. If the business is really powerful, it can control the government.
>> Here the first priority is govt and state and govt linked busineses, within the control of the state.
Singapore is a corporate state. That's widely accepted all of the world already, including the people who loath the idea.
The corporate state adds a new level of "control" to the already tight Confuscion-style of governance, because it directly impacts the finances and economy.
That's not going to change anytime soon. But you are free to live in denial :-)
Well said, but I doubt our money-faced PAP govt will do anything to protect employment of our local PMET. I have lost faith and trust in them long ago and I hope come 2016, more opposition MPs will be voted to give them a good kick, not just a slap.
@1150:
Voting out the PAP won't radically change things. Anyway, if you are under, say 50 yrs old, and/ or lived, work, voted, paid taxes in another cuntree, you have no idea about govt. other than your narrow experience with the PAP.
They know their strengths. You obviously don't.
“Please do not assume that you can change governments. Young people don't understand this” - Lee Kuan Yew
Hate to agree, but he is right.
“I make no apologies that the PAP is the Government and the Government is the PAP.” - Lee Kuan Yew
Again he is right. The civil service is supposed to be politically secular, but not in Singapore. Every branch of government is PAP. They own your ass :-)
>> I have lost faith and trust in them long ago
A great attitude, and a wise choice. Now you can concentrate on trusting yourself and your own private networks of friends and kindred spirits. IMO they are far more effective and genuinely supportive.
Any "opposition" must first be "approved by" the PAP:
“I want a world-class opposition, not a riff-raff.” -- Lee Kuan Yew
So good luck voting them out ;-)
>> I doubt our money-faced PAP govt will do anything to protect employment of our local PMET
Exactly correct.
“If you deprive yourself of outsourcing and your competitors do not, you're putting yourself out of business.” -- Lee Kuan Yew
MS you talked so much. Did you buy kopi for Redbean?
Redbean, two kopi for you in case MS is too lazy.
“Please do not assume that you can change governments. Young people don't understand this” - Lee Kuan Yew
People will not understand this cos there is no logic in this. Once opposition (coalition or not) take over the government, just replace all the top people in the gov with their own people. We are in the internet age. He will stand corrected lah. It is not that he never say the wrong thing before. He is not God and he also made mistakes.
I guess these companies are too ashamed to disclose the percentage of singaporeans they employed so they always mixed it together with PRs. Even new Singaporeans can return back easily to their original homeland so long as one of the family members (kids or parents) still hold on to the original identity.
The system created by pap is too harmful and beyond repair. Vote opposition for change.
“I want a world-class opposition, not a riff-raff.” -- Lee Kuan Yew
What he wants and what the people wants are two different things. He sits in the ivory tower for too long and detached from the ground long time ago. People wants a honest, transparent, singaporeans oriented party to take over the government.
If you deprive yourself of outsourcing and your competitors do not, you're putting yourself out of business.” -- Lee Kuan Yew
Actually we have no or little competitors. Which countries have such low taxes for the rich, capital, make their people slave for their rentals, public transport, healthcare? Our real competitors are the ultra highly paid ministers, mps and civil servants.
To be honest most overseas talents are PR as PR here like toilet paper very easy to get one so the companies dare not disclose a separate date for Singaporean as the data will shock you. Example recently I deal with investment unit, only one Singaporean, the rest include ah neh, Malaysian, vietnam, ang moh etc all PR!
The devil is in the details. Vote opposition to bring out more details of the atrocities of the ruling party.
@414:
>> Once opposition (coalition or not) take over the government, just replace all the top people in the gov with their own people.
This is what Lee Kuan Yew was alluding to: you don't understand. In fact, you have not a damn clue.
"Take over government" -- unless you are going to throw away democracy altogether and install (another?) dictatorship, the winning party/ parties don't just "take over government". They have to FORM a government. This is where the niggles begin. It's a real life comedy played out in real time.
"just replace all the top people in the gov with their own people" -- then you are NO DIFFERENT from the PAP -- the very people you accuse of "nepotism". You have the beginnings of a corrupt civil service.

@422:
>> to take over the government.
Here we go again with the "take over" nonsense. Clueless.

@457:
>> the companies dare not disclose a separate date for Singaporean as the data will shock you.
Actually, the companies are NOT OBLIGED to disclose anything to any old busy body with a grudge who just fell off the bus and hit his head on the pavement. All the operators of enterprise are required to do is to conduct their operations lawfully. That's it. They don't owe you shit.
As a Malaysian, I always thought it's Singapore that sneakily continue to steal our best young talents to migrate to Singapore as PR. These talented people ended up contributing their best lives to Singapore without Singapore paying a single cent for the costs of their many years of education to the host country.
So why are Singaporeans complaining about these PRs then.
A Malaysian.
Singaporeans have been quite comfortable with Malaysian PRs for historical reasons. Today the PRs come from all over the world and some are simply fakes and cheats. And the number is getting too big for comfort.
@ A Malaysian 726:
Eh cousin.
My Malaysian work permit for all intents and purposes is "permanent" in my Glorious Red Singapore Passport.
I employ many of your local kaki-nangs when I go do projects in Malaysia, and add value to your "boleh" cuntree.
I have not received satu sen in contribution toward my semi-free Australian education, especially toward the beer fund, as I did all my course work and study at the campus tavern. To get educated, you need beer (and sex)...that shit costs money, dear cousin-from-across-the-water.
this is the problem with Singapore today - the Singapore government is totally clueless about the extent of how many foreigners, including white angmohs and caucasians, who are being hired to come in as PMETs, doing things that SIngaporeans are equally qualified or educated to do.
Companies like DHL & SKF and many many others continue to hire foreigners to come into Singapore, to do things that many other Singaporeans can do.
Also, DHL continues to hire more and more caucasians to come into Singapore, not giving more Singaporean graduates the opportunities to do these jobs. WHY?
This is just the tip of the iceberg.
Singaporean PMETs are being replaced by foreigners! THis is really happening and the government is still taking 'baby' steps to sort this out. OMG.
'Here we go again with the "take over" nonsense.'
If you have a better proposal, you can propose, you do not have to mince the words. Take over and form mean the same thing. The party and the government are two different things. If you have live in Belgium before, you will understand that.
March 19, 2013 7:26 pm - to the 'malaysian' - the best young talents in malaysia will bypass singapore lah. they will all go uk or usa or oz or hk. only the mediocre ones such as khaw end up in sg.
March 19, 2013 8:22 pm - i agree especially those usa based companies.
Matilah - pls do not make forming a government sounds like rocket science. Many people have done it before. In fact, LKY and his 'beer-swilling bourgeois" (his own words) managed to form a government and that government lasted for many years.
To the 'Malaysian'.
It is a different era now,
we cannot live forever as it is still before 1965.
Maybe in distance future Singapore and Malaysia might united again, but for now
we have to protect own people. One must aware while
many of us have relatives from Malaysia, we have also relatives from else way. If
everyone play favoritism, there will be no end.
We are not against any people but just want the number of foreigners in checked.
If pay reduce to the level of Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Switzerland Ministers' Level, don't to think about 6.9M, because don't so much money to finance them?
In 1965, few people understand what is democracy. PAP can only thrive when information is very limited.
Matilar, talking nonsense again. Many net citizens would like to plag your two small and old rambutans so that u can't screw again and stop talking nonsense
Plug
Why are we paying taxes (direct and indirect) if our lives not going to improve? We pay taxes, they improve our lives by putting in proper system.
'There is no free lunch' - if they cannot improve our lives, then they should not collect taxes (direct or indirect).
'Make your own life. Make Singapore a Hotel to you.'
Fuck off matilah - dont keep repeating lies.
And while you are being whacked by everyone, don't forget my kopi.
And you guys are having fun having a go at Matilah. And I bet you he is enjoying every moment of his celebrity status and the interest in him.
Matilar, if u kena sliced off your balls, also your business. I don't fucking care you motherfucker. You just become ball less after your two rambutans kena plug. Did you check whether the two tiny are still attached with you hehe
