The more the separatist DPP try to break away from China, the more the Americans would encourage them to do so, the stronger China will response. The more aggressive the separatists push for independence, the earlier China would decide on a forceful reunification. China cannot and would not allow Taiwan to break away from the mainland. No Chinese leader would allow that, and especially now when militarily China is able to reunite by force, and able to ward off any intervention by the Americans or the Japanese. The rice is as good as cooked. There is no turning back the clock. The reunification with the motherland is a matter of now or tomorrow.
With the developments in Ukraine, the Taiwanese are getting a preview of what would happen to them when China decides to do a forceful reunification. The Taiwanese can count on the number of Taiwanese and capital fleeing the island. The Taiwanese can count on how many cities would be destroyed. The Taiwanese can count on how many Taiwanese would die. The Taiwanese can count on how many days they would last before the PLA takes over the island. People from both sides of the Straits would be winners.
The Taiwanese cannot count on the Americans coming to their aid with aircraft carriers task force. China would make sure they would be sunk. Similarly, the Taiwanese cannot count on the Japanese to come to their aid. They would also be sunk. Forget about air bridge to supply food and weapons. No aircraft could come near or enter the airspace over Taiwan.
These are the stark realities facing Taiwan. The alternative is not bondage or oppression. The alternative is a big welcome party, to celebrate the reunification of China and participate in the growth and prosperity of China.
What would the Taiwanese choose? Should the Taiwanese be encouraged to fight to the last Taiwanese like the Ukrainians? Are the Taiwanese willing to bear the loss of lives and properties and a good life? Or would the Taiwanese choose to fight a war that they cannot win but guaranteed for destruction?
Peaceful reunification is not colonisation or conquest and subjugation, to lose everything, but everything to gain. Reunification is like reuniting with brothers and sisters and to continue on a glorious journey to become the proud people of a super power, China. Families would be united, friends and comrades would rejoice together as one people. The economy and businesses in Taiwan would boom. The Taiwanese people can only become richer and life can only be better. China can only be more generous in its policies towards Taiwan.
Would the Taiwanese choose to live gloriously as part of the great Chinese Civilisation, or to end in tragedy, like the Ukrainians?

Mark Esper, the former US Secretary of Defense, in July called on the DPP authorities to extend the four-month mandatory military training to at least one year during his Taiwan trip.
Taiwan's DPP leader Tsai Ing-wen obeyed. On Tuesday, she announced to extend mandatory military service from its current four months to one year starting from 2024.

The DPP will lose the next election if they continue to conscripting more and more younger Taiwanese into the army to fight China. The just concluded election bore this out very clearly and was one of the reasons for the backlash. Taiwan cannot hope to find normality if they continue to antagonise China by conducting provocative acts to anger China. China just have to cut off their lifeline by imposing import of Taiwanese agricultural produce and there will be a revolt from their farmers. An embargo of the Taiwan Straits is not a far fetched idea.
It is right for a country to defend its independence when the alternative is being taken over by a nasty and oppressive power.
The reunification with China is not about fighting an aggressive power but rejoining the motherland to enjoy better benefits and to become once again the people of China and to enjoy a bigger country and a bigger economic pie.
When China was poor and weak, it was shameful and painful to be a Chinese. Today, China is rich and powerful. Becoming a Chinese is a proud and glorious thing. To be a citizen of the most powerful country in the world, in the making.
Why would the Taiwanese want to continue a fake existence as an abnormal state with very little room to grow?
Why would the Taiwanese want to die fighting to be a lesser state?
The four months training to 12 months training is a joke. What difference can it make?
The USA trained the Afghan military personnel for close to 20 years and what was the outcome? And all that boast came to nought. The ran in fear of the Taliban farmers with small arms and, goodness, against an enemy with no training at all. What a joke!
It is not the quality of the troops, but the motive they are fighting for.
The Taiwan Military and the Older Generations shall soon depose the DPP and put it to sleep for good.

Taiwan workers working for TSMC and sent to Arizona have now found out that they are being treated like dirt. USA workers were found to be paid much higher than them, and to add insult to injury, Taiwanese workers are being forced to work the odd shifts, which the USA workers shunned. Some are wishing they had not been chosen to work in the USA and are cursing their bad luck.
TSMC is toast. And with it Taiwan is also toast. What the USA wants is all of the expertise of TSMC to boost their semi-conductor knowledge that they are stealing from TSMC. They, of course, will not admit that they are stealing technology, but they are twisting the arms of TSMC to disclose to them all the sensitive technical secrets by the use of legislation. The same is being done to Samsung.
Taiwan had nothing else of substance to fall back on in manufacturing. They can go back to agriculture, which they are also quite good at. But, they still need the Chinese mainland market. Without that, they are sunk.
Is there still time for Zhang Zhongmou to change his mind and work with China, work with SMIC and challenge the American hegemony on chips? Or he has surrendered everything to the Americans, too late already?
When TSMC is uprooted, many supporting industries would go belly up unless they are needed and also uprooted to the US. There will be a vaccuum of sort in Taiwan, factories and land would be emptied. Many Taiwanese would be jobless.
The economy would be affected and the GDP would fall.
Temporary it looks like the Americans are the main winner. However, when the decoupling takes full effect, all the American based chip makers would only be selling to the American and European markets. The Chinese market would be closed to them. China would speed up in becoming self sufficient in chip making.
The American chip making industry would face a glut of chips with no one to sell to. China is the biggest consumer of chips, but would be no more.
In this chip war, it would be a clean divide and no more cross trading. All the American chip based manufacturers would have to downsize, cut jobs, cut capacities. What is the point of producing chips with no buyers, like Australian iron ore, wines, seafood, lobsters, without China absorbing the bulk of them, they could only sell retail.
Pity the chip manufacturers, the workers, and the farmers and fishermen in Australia. This is penny wise pound foolish. Like the stupid Europeans, heavily dependent on the Russians for cheap oil and gas and food and want to play punk with their main source of cheap supplies. Now feeling the pain.
The Americans would feel the pain very soon. TSMC would not need the capacity and the jobs. After a year or two, TSMC would have to retrench the workers and engineers they are recruiting now.

Hi Redbean, speed here. China will be very reluctant to cause death and destructions in Taiwan. The island is part of China and the inhabitants are Chinese. Why would President Xi kill Chinese? Taiwan is part of China. Why would President Xi destroy his own country? I can only assume that the reunification of Taiwan would be bloodless and peaceful.
Agree. Many Taiwanese are looking forward to reunite with the motherland. The reunification would be executed together with pro unification forces in Taiwan. If not through election, it would be a bloodless coup. The politicians are just politicians.

China’s Aircraft Carrier Liaoning Edged Close to Guam for First Time
The Liaoning aircraft carrier group of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) Navy was recently spotted for the first time sailing close to Guam, a key US military node in the second island chain, during its ongoing exercises in the West Pacific, showing that the Chinese carrier is ready to defend the country against potential US attacks launched from there, including military interference attempts over the Taiwan question.
The Chinese activity is likely a large-scale movement with an eye on the US military, Kyodo News quoted the Japanese Defense Ministry as saying. Guam is home to US air force and bases that host strategic bombers and nuclear-powered submarines, and is considered an important node in the second island chain that is designed to contain China, observers said.
China will never attack US military bases in Guam as long as the US military does not attack China or interfere in the Taiwan question, but having such capabilities is a deterrent against potential US provocations.
In addition to the Liaoning, which demonstrated its capability in reaching Guam with its latest voyage, the PLA's DF-26 intermediate range ballistic missile and H-6K bomber with air-launched standoff missiles can also reach the island.
On Sunday, when the Liaoning aircraft carrier group was near Guam, the PLA Eastern Theater Command organized "record-breaking" cross-service joint combat alert patrols and joint fire strike exercises in maritime and aerial areas around the island of Taiwan in a resolute response to the recent escalation in the US-Taiwan collusion, after US President Joe Biden signed the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2023 on December 23, marking the first time the US government will finance weapons for the island of Taiwan.
Since the PLA has been focusing on training as a system, it cannot be ruled out that the Liaoning aircraft carrier group's far sea exercise was interrelated with the drills around the island of Taiwan.
