For many years, the Taiwanese thought they owned TSMC. Yes, but a small percentage, just like Alibaba being owned by SoftBank.
With TSMC being uprooted to the US, Taiwan is now an empty shell.
If the high tech semi conductor industry is to be a main source of income for Taiwan, they better work with China. China has very good reason to want to help Taiwan to grow, just like helping Hong Kong to grow. - December 30, 2022 9:27 am

It is ok for Morris to hold American citizenship. But he must not forget his root.
At this age, he should think about contributing to his motherland. Money is no longer important to him. Do something worthy and positive and to be remembered till eternity.
Leave a good name behind for posterity. - December 30, 2022 9:30 am

TSMC had said that they are done for if they ship all their manufacturing to Arizonan US as the work culture is different and the finished product would be uncompetitive and China being the biggest market for ifs chips.
But the white loving Tsai Ingwen and her.DPP govt insist on bowing to Uncle Sam's demand in return for some gangster protection from US.
Even the extention of NS to one year is acceding to the American suggestion.
The sooner She and her DPP get kicked out of gov, the better it is for the Taiwanese people. - December 30, 2022 9:59 am

Hi Anon 9.30
Bananas Overseas Chinkees will never ever dreamt and loved their MotherLand.
This Morris Minor with mostly Christian Names will only worshipped their Whites Fathers and Mothers.
Most alreday Helljulah!
Will never end be seen with Chinamen and Women as they deemed uncouths and unkemptas seen when they are poor and destitues in the old days.
Most still have a superiority illusionary complex that they are better than them.
Not knowing that they are Duds as mostly coolies and Peasants that migrated to other lands as slaves begging and scouring for a livings.
Taiwanese been under the Japs for too long are mostly half Japs in their mentalites.

TSMC is toast if they shift to Arizona. As I understand, TSMS is already idling some of its EUV lithography machines in Taiwan itself, due to Chinese manufacturers of consumer products now opting for its own chips made in the mainland, and the fall in demand for high end mobile phones and other IT products, needing more high end chips.
When TSMC is hijacked by the USA and goes to USA, its products will be uncompetitive globally, benefitting Chinese chip makers who will eventually corner the market of the mature chips, mainly in the 14nm to 28nm range that most consumer products needed. Who will TSMC sell to then? And not only that, they are unwittingly pushing China to be their main competitor in years to come. The stronger the push, the more adamant will the Chinese resolve be, to go on their own steam and innovate. And just look at what they have achieved without the help of the USA and the West - in space techology, AI, super computers, turbo jet engines, rocketry, satellite navigation etc.
Remember, TSMC will be competing against Intel, Nvidia, Texas Instruments etc, which will be strongly supported by the USA Government. Who do you think Biden or whoever sits in the White House will really be supporting to survive, with all the competition already inside the USA itself? Even if Biden or whoever gains the White House, who do you think Congress will be supporting when the shit hits the fan? - December 30, 2022 10:31 am

At one time they were fabricating lies that China forced foreign companies to give up their trade secrets. Now not only they are forcing TSMC, Samsung and Japanese companies to surrender their trade secrets in chip making, they even forced TSMC to move to the US.
The devils would accused others of things the devils are doing. - December 30, 2022 10:44 am

Let them lure all the chip manufacturers from Taiwan, South Korea and Japan to the USA in their chip alliance, but can they eventually compete on price, against each other, when China is up and running against them?
Further, how do they hope to infiltrate the Chinese market when the Chinese are almost self sufficient by then? China will be importing less and less of chips from the USA progressively. Anyway, that is their problem.
Like the Europeans, they followed the USA and are now caught in a bind over energy. And to add insult to injury, the USA is ripping them off with energy prices four times what the EU used to pay for to Russia. Now their industries have been decimated and moving out. This is not just about this winter. It will be a longer suffering for Europe if they continue just blindly following the USA's dictates.

Morris Chang owns only a tiny fraction of TSMC. He is toothless and has no leverage. The main USA shareholders can easily bring down TSMC if they want to, and if the USA Government wants to. Which is the way the USA pressured foreign entities that failed to tow the line and are eventually destroyed by USA investors using the modus operandi of first investing in them using all the fiat money, then withdrawing support to crash the companies and countries they want to target.
For themselves, investors outside of USA have to go through stringent scrutiny and get permission from the USA Government if they want to invest in strategic assets in the USA. China had never been able to invest in strategic assets in the USA, citing national security risk. Even China's own investments in the USA, like Huawei, is targeted as national security risk, not to talk of China companies buying into say, ports, utility companies and operating other essential services.
The biggest farce being trotted out is China is not even allowed leeway to buy or operate ports outside of the USA, especially in South America, Africa and Middle East. Or even build infrastructures for poor countries fabricating the debt trap hubris. - December 30, 2022 2:03 pm

Is there still time for Zhang Zhongmou to change his mind and work with China, work with SMIC and challenge the American hegemony on chips? Or he has surrendered everything to the Americans, too late already?
When TSMC is uprooted, many supporting industries would go belly up unless they are needed and also uprooted to the US. There will be a vaccuum of sort in Taiwan, factories and land would be emptied. Many Taiwanese would be jobless.
The economy would be affected and the GDP would fall.
Temporary it looks like the Americans are the main winner. However, when the decoupling takes full effect, all the American based chip makers would only be selling to the American and European markets. The Chinese market would be closed to them. China would speed up in becoming self sufficient in chip making.
The American chip making industry would face a glut of chips with no one to sell to. China is the biggest consumer of chips, but would be no more.
In this chip war, it would be a clean divide and no more cross trading. All the American chip based manufacturers would have to downsize, cut jobs, cut capacities. What is the point of producing chips with no buyers, like Australian iron ore, wines, seafood, lobsters, without China absorbing the bulk of them, they could only sell retail.
Pity the chip manufacturers, the workers, and the farmers and fishermen in Australia. This is penny wise pound foolish. Like the stupid Europeans, heavily dependent on the Russians for cheap oil and gas and food and want to play punk with their main source of cheap supplies. Now feeling the pain.
The Americans would feel the pain very soon. TSMC would not need the capacity and the jobs. After a year or two, TSMC would have to retrench the workers and engineers they are recruiting now.
Someone said the American and European leaders are smart. Really? Fighting with the hands that feed them?
