IMD World Competitiveness Center ranked Malaysia 5th and Singapore 16th
‘IMD business school is located in Lausanne, Switzerland. It is one of the world’s premier business and management institutions. It offers the world’s best MBA program according to Forbes ranking in 2011, 2013. In 2014, it was ranked first in open programs worldwide by the Financial Times.’ Singapore Business Times.
In its World Talent Report, Malaysia was ranked 5th, ahead of Singapore at 16th. The ranking was based on three key factors of the country:
1. its investment and development in home-grown talent
2. its ability to retain local talent and attract those from overseas
3. its readiness to fulfil market demands with the available talent pool
It is understandable that Malaysia ranked very high in 1 while Singapore took a rubbing here. Malaysia is very focussed about investing and developing its very own talents. Singapore likely lost 20% of its best talents when their places were given to foreigners in the universities. The IMD must have noticed this flaw in developing own local talents versus developing other countries’ talent.
As for factor 2, Malaysia definitely scored better in retaining its own talents while Singapore lost out as it encouraged its local talents to go overseas, maybe due to poor job offers at home. Also, many local talents, especially the middle age PMEs were displaced and ended up unemployed or under employed. This must count strongly against Singapore. But it scored very high in attracting talents from overseas to replace its displaced local talents while Malaysia might lose out in this area. So, for factor 2 the score is likely to be even.
In factor 3, Malaysia was likely to fill its market demands from local talents while Singapore would be filling them up with foreign talents. On paper should also be fairly even. The only questionable factor may be that IMD knew that the foreign talents Singapore was attracting were craps or fake talents. As an European institution, it would probably look at those so called talents employed by Singapore and measured them against their own standards. Simply put, if they would not think they are good enough and unemployable in their standards, they would rule them out as rubbish talents. They might have a good laugh at the stupidity of these talents and so did not give Singapore any marks for it.
This could explain why Malaysia is at 5th spot and Singapore at 16th spot. But that is just my guess. Maybe there are far more serious reasons for downgrading Singapore to 16th place. The IMD is filled with real talents and would not be fooled by fools and fakes. They are outsiders and could see the picture very clearly and objectively. While the fools are happily deceiving themselves, the IMDs must be having a good laugh.
I really cannot find any good reason other than the above to justify Malaysia ranking higher than Singapore. Singapore has been the champion, the pipe piper in recruiting foreign talents. It constantly go for a world wide search when a CEO position is vacant. The first choice seems to be foreign talents and a local talent is considered only after the foreign talent search failed.
And I trust that this IMD ranking system is credible compares to those demolished and unrecognised university rankings. Anyone got a better idea why Singapore is so far below Malaysia?

The question the govt needs to ask is whether our workers on the ground are really HAPPY or not...
What is the use of being ranked number 1 and your workers are unhappy.....

Anyone got a better idea why Singapore is so far below Malaysia?

It has got more to do with local Sinkies lah, and not so much about their rulers, the PAP.
Because local Sinkies, whether talented or not, are simply no enough and also very low fertility rate.
Like that how to grow talent when fertility is low? How to retain talent when there is not even enough in the first place? And needless to say. how to fulfil market demands when local Sinkie talents no enough?
So any wonder why even Matland can overtake Sinkieland in these aspects?
There are not even enough local Sinkie talents, or if there is any at all, ready to replace the not that talented PAP govt.
Shortage of local Sinkie talents is real bad, and has reached almost catastrophic stage.
In fact by getting so many all kinds of foreign talents, PAP is telling local Sinkies they are hopeless.
Local Sinkies not hopeless lah. Cannot anyhow say like that. They are not fit to live in this smart city lah.
Rb is angry that matland beats sin lah. He and many sinkies have very strong superiority complex. Everything must beat others, including toilet.
All knows Rb does not have much regard and good opinion of matland though he seems to go there for golfing. Maybe there are better golfing facilities than those in sin. Or he could be looking for bargain rather than quality.
The brain drain in Singapore has to be very bad to serious. As so many like darkness and co have decided to leave and set up enterprises outside Singapore. In Malaysia for example they have ventured into panelling, plantations. In south America and Africa mining and other related industries. The worst part is many don't have a strong connection with home. So they are gone forever.
As an observer. I do wish Singapore luck. As luck is what she needs most to arrest this rot.
How to be competitive when you have so many fat cats running the show..got a story to tell..friend of mine had a cushy job in one of our GLCs..promptly at 5pm each day, certain senior managers would be summoned to ceo's office where they spend the next few hours over golfing stories n fine spirits...my friend resigned, he's a conscionable chap n was too young to be turned into an alky..what's the moral of the story? Every GLC already had a field day milking the Sinkies...why compete in the big bad world..is our local talent pool only comprise of army kakis n relatives of u know who?? Reality checks a coming!!!
RB is more concern about the rot here than what is happening to Malaysia. Oh, cannot say, rot, it is gold plated rot for the fools to believe in. But it is ok, as many of us would not be around to see it when the crawlings come out from the rot.
For those who are happy with the crumbs, the faith is strong and there is the promise of paradise at the end of the rainbow.

Sure, a lot of shit is cheaper and thus "more competitive" in Malaysia. But good luck to you, because there's a lot of other shit which will piss you off ;-)
Actually, to be fair, Malaysia is not bad. You can still make Lotsa Bucks, and there are plenty of hot women to bang.
Anyway it is silly to compare Malaysia to Singapore. Smart fuckers will consider them both together: stuff that you can do cheaper in Malaysia, do in Malaysia. Stuff that is better done in Singapore, do in Singapore.
If sinkies ranked this ruling party based on the three factors, the party members should all be sacked.
Btw, are there still talents in matland? definition of talents very subjective.
