Shane M the civic minded model citizen
Shane M is a young man. But he is standing tall, taller than many above his age, taller than many above his position as a student intern. He saw injustice, another intern being bullied and beaten in the office by his supervisor. He stood up against injustice. He video taped the incident, but being young and inexperienced, sought advice from Hardwarezone forum.
He was advised to make a police report. And he did. The Police and MOM have received reports of this case and are investigating. And the poor intern is saved from further physical assault and beating. The psychological wound on this young man can be serious and he would have to bear with it throughout his life.
Thanks to this young man Shane M, he is saved from the clutches of hell. Shane M deserves a commendation from the Police for his act of bravery and chivalry. I salute this young man. Our society needs more such fine young man that would not look the other way when something grossly wrong happened before him.

I am so angry when I viewed the video yesterday and can not believed that such event can occurred in singapore at this modern time. I want to knn that guy if I ever got the chance to meet the bully.
The stupidity of that cocksucker bully really boggles the imagination.
He thinks he is still in the early 1900s when this kind of bullying, even in offices, were rampant.
The victim's parents deserved a pat too for showing restrain when confronting the bully. Perhaps their forgiving nature rubbed off on their son and so this incident happened and would have not been known to the public save for the civic mindedness of a brave Shane.
I won't be so forgiving.
I would bring along a baseball bat. He may end up in hospital on life support.
Sometimes, some people deserve violence to bring them to their senses.
redbean:
>> Shane M deserves a commendation from the Police for his act of bravery and chivalry.
Ah bullshit. "Thank you"? Yes. "Commendation"? No. Not that big a deal. Everyone has a camera on them now.
>> The psychological wound on this young man can be serious and he would have to bear with it throughout his life.
More bullshit.
The lesson learnt, and then get on with life as a better person is : Next time, stand up for my self ASAP and not let a bad situation get worse over a course of time.
You need to catch up with the times. Fast forward to the present redbean.
This is where the majority of us live.
Hi Uncle Mah, welcome to the blog. I share your sentiment and will do the same.
So shall we name and shame all those who show signs of uncivil acts? Starting with the branches of government who coerced n threaten...physically as well as psychologically ..how many forumers ever experienced a morning coffee session with SPF..lta..cpf..mas..cnb..cpib..etc etc..pleasant? Easy to single out the bullies eh...hehe
Dragon Prince: "...what to do, it's happened."
“Even from my sick bed, even if you are going to lower me into the grave and I feel something is going wrong, I will get up.”
Really?
So where are you now?
Matilah, don't spout your sickness here can? There are still people that through their upbringings or environment, or psychological, will not stand up to bullies no matter what.
That is why you need laws to level the playing field for those who are unable to defend or protect themselves. You think everyone is like you?
And that is why you need chivalry and some righteous individuals to stand up for them. And there is Shane M and many more Shane Ms to come.
@1104:
>> The victim's parents deserved a pat too for showing restrain when confronting the bully.
Restraint? Bullshit. The guy was completely passive. Like a stunned fish.
The parents need to feel a bit of guilt for raising their child to be a pussy.
>> Perhaps their forgiving nature rubbed off on their son
You have a weird idea of what "forgiveness" is supposed to be.
Even in the military as harsh as they are, superiors don't repeatedly slap their juniors. Why? Because trained killers like soldiers have character.
Would you accept and forgive being slapped and scolded over the course of days, and not even render some form of response?
“Well, we’re sorry we didn’t get it exactly right, but I hope you’ll understand and bear with us, because we’re trying our best to fix the problems”
Sorry got cure or not ah?
redbean:
You are truly an idiot.
>> for those who are unable to defend or protect themselves.
Eh asshole, this isn't "The Rock" beating on Stephen Hawking in his wheel chair lah.
This is a puny chee bye bullying pure and simple. Over the course of several days? No response ah. Zero??
Even if your opponent is "bigger"? You just "take it"? So what if you lose the fight you had standing up for yourself? Are you so KIASU you won't even defend what little manhood you have?
Oh yah, ...the law? So what if the cops are called. Go to court lah. Let it all come out in the open. What? Scared of police ah? again Kiasu kiasi.
redbean, you are so wrapped up in your own damn opinion you cannot even see how UNCONSCIOUSLY kiasu-kiasi you are. You are hardwired and UNAWARE -- completely. So I point it out to you. Reject it as you please, I don't give a fuck.
With people like you around, no wonder the bullies often win!
Matilar, here u go again. Go to jb and get your daily blow job lar otherwise u are getting withdrawal symptom or your two tiny no more already?
Wow Matilah, I am so damn wrapped up in my opinion, and you are so damn unwrapping your opinion huh!
I agree the upbringing by the parents on the right to fight back is lacking. The sad thing is that the sick Chinese civilisation, through years of poverty and deprivation and illiteracy, have bred a culture of least or no resistance. Remember Ah Q?
The Chinese people must stand up to fight for their own right and turf, and not to be bullied. Looked at that sick country called Taiwan, being bullied by the Philippines for so many years, its fishermen robbed and killed and the Taiwanese Govt did nothing. Yes nothing.
Only in this case, when the media blew up the case and stir some hysteria that Ma Ying Jiu tried to do something, but still very lame.
On the other hand, the once Sick Man of Asia, China, is standing up and not going to be bullied by anyone, not the Pinoys, not the Japanese and not the Americans, again.
I must say, this incident is a sad and pathetic thing to have happened. You want to volunteer to teach the young man and his parents how to grow balls?
Truth tellers will not be silenced!
Pa pmsp and ministers look the other way when ordinary Singapore get screwed everyday.
Over the last 50 years MIW had groom citizens to be compliant like sheep so that even when they are bullied by bosses or foreigners, must not retaliate. WTF!
Change 2016!
redbean:
>> The sad thing is that the sick Chinese civilisation, through years of poverty and deprivation and illiteracy, have bred a culture of least or no resistance.
I disagree. Try slapping a Cantonese subordinate in Hong Kong like that, and see what happens.
Please don't confuse "Chinese Culture" (and there are variants) with kiasu-kiasi-blind-obedience-to-authority Singapore Culture, because you "insult" Chinese Culture by tainting it with your almost-approval of Singaporean culture's TWISTED idea of Confucianism.
>> Remember Ah Q?
? I have no idea what you mean here.
>> You want to volunteer to teach the young man and his parents how to grow balls?
Please lah, there are better people than me who teach this stuff. Upgrade your standards, please ;-)
As for the parents...aka the older generation...they did their best, what they thught was right...at the time.
Now the world is a much different place. In previous times, bosses could get away Scot free WITH THIS SHIT.
Whilst we can all agree that not all the changes in our present have been "good", these days abusing employees or persons under your care or authority is strictly not tolerated anymore. Not is so-called "civil society" anyway.
Also not standing up for yourself in prior times could be viewed as being "forgiving", these days you are EXPECTED to respond -- at least challenge the bully on his behaviour.
Ask yourself, how many times you are willing to be slapped and scolded by your boss before you even respond and defend yourself?
Slap me once, shame on you.
Slap and scold me repeatedly over the course of a few days...even after a co-worker has asked you to stop...big, big shame on me.
Did this Shane got his phone, camera, laptop, email accounts, etc. examined closely for evidence?
Matilah, the Hongkies are an anomaly. There were taken out of the Chinese system for 150 years and brought up different and the fear of authority has been removed from their psychi. And for that matter, the new Chinese brought up under the communist not God fearing system are also not authority fearing.
In a way you are right about Sinkies being kiasu, kiasi and kia chenghu. We are bred to fear authority like olden China.
I shouldn't have asked you about Ah Q. A banana would not know who is Ah Q or Lu Tsun. All you know is Ayn Rand and western writers and philosophers.
Eh, fake angmoh, go and read up on this new China classic, I think it is called the Legend or Life or whatever of Ah Q, by Lu Tsun. It is all about the poverty and self deprecation of a sick civilisation at its worst hours.
Had it not for the brave young man, such abuse might not be uncovered.I wonder whether there are more of such abuse waiting to be uncovered.I also wonder whether the abuser will be unmasked and charged in court?
No, this is a private matter. The parents must sue the supervisor.
But please don't slap your Filipino maid hor.
In such instance.
for sure you will be arrested and jailed.
But slapping Singaporeans.
Can be more lenient lah.
Once every 5 years, just give a CPF top up can already lah.
Agree that this is not a police matter. Don't bother the police.
Ill treating of maids, yes. Can go to prison.
Cruelty against animals, lagi serious.
matilah, look for edmund to brush up on your chinese culture and china classics.
People must learn to fight back thats why local jobs are taken over by foreigners. People must not allow the G or foreigner or superior to bully them. If someone bully you, one must protest, riot, rebel, boycott or do something. There are many ways to hurt your bully without your bully knowing it. Just google on the subject.
Matilar, u are like a cockroach just refusing to go away. Though this is not the right forum, I prefer u talk about your sexual conquest, blow job and incest etc. at least it's more entertaining mah. Tio Bo? Knn
The government should encourage people to protest more often else the people will end up being just another passive pussy who is also kiasi, kiasu, kia mata. Protest is good, being passive is bad.
>>408pm
Matilar is mad but sometimes right. Just ignore his postings if you do not like to read them.
Limbo Singh says...
I've read and heard the reactions of Singaporeans to this video. All were shocked at what the supervisor did and many were puzzled by the reaction of the intern. They said that they would never have stood for such treatment. Many gave choice examples of what they would do to their superior if such a thing happened to them. I think the victim's behaviour is out of the ordinary. I think 99.9% of Singaporeans would not react like the victim. I have encountered numerous gutsy and spunky Singaporeans in my lifetime. We cannot take just one example and make generalizations. One swallow does not a summer make.
While i salute Shane for his good deed,i am also surprise that one need to wait for it to happen few times before taking a video.
Shows that even young u student at age 23 are still not matured enough to tell right or wrong.
Shane probably has not done his NS,else he would have learn as a NS police ,CD or soldier on what immediate action to take.
Moral of the story.NS is good.
Yes, I think all of us would agree that Shane should be commended for his initiative (video recording) that saves his colleague from further physical abuse from the supervisor. I think he must have been beaten more times before the revelation of the video. I feel so sorry for him. There are also employers who harass, shout and humiliate their subordinates in front of their co-workers,too.
redbean and his special pleading.
>> We are bred to fear authority like olden China.
Animals are bred. Humans are not. Interesting the way you view the culture you supposedly champion.
>> All you know is Ayn Rand and western writers and philosophers.
No, I know even less than you give me credit for. It is you who comes across as a smarty-know-it-all, and "look down" on the folks who don't share your storehouse of (so-called) "essential knowledge". ;-)
>> Eh, fake angmoh, go and read up on this new China classic,
WOW, redbean now resorts to racist taunts. Shame on you, old fart.
@254:
>> matilah, look for edmund to brush up on your chinese culture and china classics.
Why? Will it get me more Chinese pussy? I already had more Chinese women than most guys can imagine ;-)
What's the point of expending all that time and energy on ancient tropes? To be able to argue with the village idiots here? You have to be kidding mate.
Classics from every culture are just fiction and legend. Even historical claims are dubious because they cannot be proven to be accurate.
Yet assholes from EVERY CULTURE elevate their ethnic folklore to the point of RELIGION. Start quoting chapter and verse, placing far too much credence on "ancient wisdom" -- which is mostly BULLSHIT because it neither science nor evidence based. So fuck your "religion". Blind faith never did impress me :-)
@408:
>> Matilar, u are like a cockroach just refusing to go away.
If cockroach's could respond, they will tell you not to insult cockroaches. Anyway, I'm here to stay. If you don't like it, kill yourself ;-)
@954:
>> There are also employers who harass, shout and humiliate their subordinates in front of their co-workers,too.
And there are subordinates who have the self-esteem, emotional intelligence and mettle to confront their bullies -- even if it comes to putting their current employment status and regular income on the line.
"No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.
Remember always that you not only have the right to be an individual, you have an obligation to be one." -- Eleanor Roosevelt
The victim at 23 year old under normal circumstances, should have completed his NS.
It could be that he still behaves liked NS Boy, whatever order and punishment he swallowed them wholesale. He might have felt helpless doing NS and stays timid. It got nothing to do with balls. Some are just born timid just like some are born aggressive and like to bully. Both types may need help.
In any case, it was reported that the Intern was expelled from the School. WHY WAS HE EXPELLED?
patriot
Matillar I don't intend to kill myself as I have not screw your ass and crush your two old tiny yet. Please lar don't brat about how many women u bedded especially u include your mother, aunt, sisters and daughters. U are an animal knn
In history, literary work is a reflection of the times.
Every era in China and other civilisations produces unique literary works reflective of the mood and culture of their period and society.
Song dynasty is known for their “宋词 ”。 Below is an example:
渔家傲 范仲淹
塞下秋来风景异,衡阳雁去无留意,
四面边声连角起。
千嶂里,长烟落日孤城闭。
浊酒一杯家万里,燕然未勒归无计。
羌管悠悠霜满地。
人不寐,将军白发征夫泪。
Tang dynasty produced great poets like 杜甫, 李白 and their “唐诗”. Below is an example:
登岳阳楼 杜甫
昔闻洞庭水,今上岳阳楼。
吴楚东南坼,乾坤日夜浮。
亲朋无一字,老病有孤舟。
戎马关山北,凭轩涕泗流。
Ming dynasty is famous for their 小说 such as 《三国志演义》和《水浒传》.
How about our society and time?
For years, to outsiders Sg may be an oasis of materials but it is likely also often “seen” by many as a cultural desert.
Could the following Sg's “GREATEST LITERARY WORKS” be an image of our times? :

Modern civilisation progress is arguably reflected in its language from caveman era to the 21st century as shown in the annal of historic records.
What kind of society has our literary works reflected?
The above work is just from a small section of our “GREATEST LITERARY WRITERS”. But if one trolls the internet, this could just be the tip of the ice-berg.
No?
Could it be a case of “上梁不正下梁歪 “?
I wonder who were their teachers?
Could a bona fide renowned writer ever produce such “outstanding” disciples?
If no, then what kind of teachers would have produced such students?
Any intelligent guess?
Materially we may have made it as a society. But what was the underlying cultural factors of our society that forged such outcome? Without such cultural factors as the future pillar of support for a society, over the long term, would future progress be sustainable? Perhaps, this is something worth for our society to ponder about?
This is just my personal worry and concern arrived at having experienced lives in current times but of course it may not be reflective of what we are now or would be in the future. And I certainly hope not.
this edmund reminds me of a filthy yellow teethed buck tooth eunuch mandarin in the forbidden city during the early 20th century when the europeans and the americans and the japs were cutting up china like a watermelon. too engrossed in dead dusty books, his head up in the clouds oblivious to the fact that his arsehole is being sodomised. lay your head on a porcelain pillow and smoke some opium, edmund! or is your real name tan ah kow.
Talking about balls and NS makes men out of boys, let me relates how 2 grandmas; obviously ball-less proved more gutsy and courageous than lots of those men with balls hanging at their mouths and most NS Men and those that completed it.
Those who participated at the May Day Gathering would have had the joy of listening to Two Grandmas who spoke and sang in various languages and dialects with gusto against the State Policies. They were the more spontaneous and natural speakers and one even gave a run for money with Lawyer Ravi in speaking Tamil, lolx.
Comparatively, many who talked with balls at their mouth, gave all kinds of reason for not going near Hong Lim Park/Speaker Corner. Me knows some who talked like as though they are Hang Tuah and wu song did not attend the Event and offered many reasons.
The Moral of this posting is that the offsprings of the Said Two Grandmas need not have to have balls and National Service to behave righteously and be able to seek justice for themselves. They even seek justice for others as well like many bloggers who are doing quite well themselves. Matilah_Singapura is one good example. He can afford to enjoy himself everywhere, however while he immerse himself in esctasy, he is here to give all moral supports all these years.
So, please do not piss him off. Without him around, we will lose much entertainment and education.
patriot
Right, this guy is good entertainment value. No bother about his substance.
patriot,
Thanks for your defence.
However it would take more than a few words in the virtual world to piss me off to the point where I don.t visit anymore.
I am here for my own selfish enjoyment' not for "truth" or "patriotism" or any other complex abstract concepts some of the would-be scholars here might summise.
you have a good day. Peace out.
What am I hearing? Matilah got pissed off by someone? I only read Matilah pissing off everyone.
No way can any piss Matilah off, even if peeing on his head.

Are you still in your dream ….... ?
Or are you still intoxicated and confused by an endless night of booze and …...... ?
Or you are after all totally ignorant of historical facts and wanting the world to see what is inside your head ….... ?
MR ANONYMOUS NONAME @ ANONYMOUS 22 May 2013 7:50 am,
In the annal of historic records, you will be “THE ONE AND ONLY LEARNED HISTORIAN” who will ever find any Eunuch with an English name in all Chinese Dynasties. So much for your abilities to “tell lies” …......
I hope you are currently not hired as a “history teacher” in any form as the below quote of YOURS is self-explanatory of your "history knowledge":
Quote:
//”early 20th century when the europeans and the americans and the japs were cutting up china like a watermelon.”//
Unquote
Which history book ever recorded that?
Which period in the early 20th century ever recorded China was engaged in any major war with the Europeans and Americans?
Which 3 years old are you trying to “smoke”? Do you think readers are just like you and only have “----” in their heads?
The major war in early 20th century is WWI between 1914 to 1918.
Historians throughout never know China was ever directly involved in the WWI except of course our “MR ANONYMOUS NONAME @ ANONYMOUS 22 May 2013 7:50 am”.
Who was “chopping up” who in WWI? Was China ever involved?
Are you still in your dream or “highly intoxicated”?
Did you see “porcelain pillow and opium in your dream”? You are totally outdated! Still living in the 19th century? Yes, porcelain pillows and opium beds can still be seen in the “real world”. “Done” and “dusted” if you know what I mean!
Any intelligent guess where can we find porcelain pillows and opium in this modern world?
Did I hear “antique museums”?
Wonder who is still dreaming and thinking men is still living in the era where "they have to wear a long pig tail with shaved head?"
Haven you heard about DF21d ASBM, FD-8000 ABM and Qian-18? Those are the realities and not //“some dusty dead books”// "hallucinating" in your “xxxx-filled” head.
Ha ha! Now who has been sounding so “angry and pissed off” early in the morning? I did not know who has “touched” you? Sounds like your “sensitive part and raw nerves” had been touched! I hope mere words have not “triggered” that. If that is so, I can't imagine what will you be like if you ever have "piles" and need to be examined physically by your doctor and being “touched".......
//”or is your real name tan ah kow.”//
Frankly, I thought it was unwise of you to drag in the name “tan ah kow” to associate with the “E” word etc. You may have known that there are many important, influential and wealthy people bearing that surname. Is your subconscious mind speaking its thoughts and giving yourself away again? Why not any other surname but “tan ah kow”? I am sure many readers and interested parties would be curious to know what is in your thoughts when that surname popped out subconsciously in your “intoxicated mind”. Chinese has a saying, “酒后露真言”。Care to share?
Hi Edmund, you are fighting a ghost.
Matilah:
Me guessed that other than Redbean himself, You are mostly likely the most enduring one here. It has been many years since and many here are happily interacting wirh You. There are much that You can teach us though You claim You are being entertained. It could be vice versa and me am a fan here enjoying much too for many years.
There were times when me had coffee with Redbean & Co, we would feel that had You been around, there would have been more to talk. Even long lost Wally Buffet was looking forward to meeting You. But, alas! You seemed so hard to get or maybe play hard to get and Wally stopped visiting.
Speaking for myself; me has always being impressed by people with unconventional ideas. Best are those capable of radical understanding. They are hard to come by, Redbean is lucky to get one here.

edmund, we are still laughing from your claim that the famous Aesop's Fable The Fox & the Grapes is a Chinese folklore. Even the commentators at nanyanglauchiaus.blogspot are laughing their asses off.

ANON,
Obviously if //” nanyanglauchiaus.blogspot”// existed, the “commentators' joke” was on you.
Perhaps you probably have not heard about the art of war counter move “抛砖引玉”.
You have “swallowed” the “bait” hook, sink and line and till now you still did not realise it was a “fake mistake” to “bait” you.
I have great respect for all ex- “南大 ” 大哥大姐, though I was not from there given my age.
If you really are well-connected to their network, anyone of them could have seen through this “抛砖引玉”.counter move and tell you about it. Then you would not have to “embarrass” yourself in the internet that you “swallowed” the “bait” set up for you and thought you finally “won” something back.
//”edmund, we are still laughing from your claim that the famous Aesop's Fable The Fox & the Grapes is a Chinese folklore.”//

patriot,
I thank the fates that I've been on the internet for over 20 years now, and the most fun I have had has been on UseNet, Forums, and Blogs -- in that chronological order -- starting with newsgroups like soc.culture.singapore, and then forums like the old Straits Times Forum -- which got so anarchic they closed it down, and the onto FindSingapore, redbean's forum and now his blog. In that time I also did many non-Singapore activities on the various libertarian and science forums.
Over 20 years, life has changed for me. Way back in the late 1980's and the 1990's I was employed as a grossly over paid and overrated expat in Singapore, and so I had a lot more time on my hands. When the 1997 currency crisis hit, the company went belly-up and we all lost our 'chiak buay liao' golden rice bowls. After recovering from the shock of instant unemployment, I then started my own enterprise and found I had a lot less "free" time on my hands to talk cock on the internet.
Fast forward to the present -- the irony. Now with more personal devices connected to the net 24/7/365, I have even less time -- so I confine my activities essentially to this little spot. Even Facebook (which I hate) is a once-a-week affair for me -- and only for "networking" purposes.
With so little time, to do this, you can understand why I claim that it is "selfish fun" for me. When it stops being fun, I will stop doing it. It's that simple.
If you, yourself have found some benefit in my activities, good for both of us -- completely unintentional, but good nonetheless.
As for meeting AFK (away from keyboard) -- when I'm in Singapore -- approx every 2 months or so, my program is so packed back to back -- the price one pays for not being an "employee" any more. Perhaps one day -- when I return for a real holiday ;-)
Anyway, keep slamming the establishment the way you do. The blog is definitely better for your level headedness -- a nice balance to my psychotic rants :-)
Peace out.
Damn. My head is getting bigger with all these compliments.
I must relieve the pressure...o lord it is building fast....where the bookmark to that new porn site...damn good stress relief dat...
P.S. Fishballs are like sausage. If you see how they make it, you probably won't eat it ;-)
Just don't forget your medication.
You people complained the intern did not hit back or react, there is a taxi driver who was punched in the tummy and complaining in TRE. He also did not hit back or react.
Daft and timid Singaporeans.
Is the intern a graduate? Did he work for 3 years as an intern, full time or only during vacation? If he is a graduate, then it is quite unusual for him to be an intern from SIM. And it is quite unusual to be paid $500 or $600 pm. So likely he is not a graduate. A graduate should not be getting this kind of pay, lower than a foreign worker.
Did he work 3 years like an employee or just occasionally like during term breaks? It is likely to be the latter. If he was working like an employee, then it is like exploiting cheap labour under the guise of internship. There may be CPF contributions involved.
Why are these facts left dangling in the air? Can someone check and verify and confirmed as they are reported in the main media.
