Hsien Loong - Hot button issues

In his party address to 2,500 PAP activists Hsien Loong raised two hot button issues, one, raising of GST, and two, amendment of Constitution to ensure the president is from the minority group, from time to time.

In the first issue, despite claiming that we have so many hundreds of billions, maybe trillions, in our reserves, the govt is showing signs of desperation for money, to collect money, and raising GST is what it is going to do. Why so urgent, so desperate I don't know. Only reason is money not enough. If money enough, there is no need to keep on taxing the people. Right? Or because money got so much, more reason to want to tax more, to collect more money? I leave it to you guys to guess what is wrong or right with this desperation.

I think it is ok to amend the Constitution to provide for a minority president every now and then. I also think that this is unnecessary as long as the ruling party knows what it is doing, to every now and then put up a minority president as it should be. Having to amend the Constitution is a very serious thing and in our case a very complicated thing that would only aggravate the already sensitive and emotional situation, now made more complex with the irresponsible increase in population with more new minorities becoming significant in numbers.

In the past we have the CMIO formula that was quite readily accepted. Now with minorities that may become majority, with new minorities growing in numbers, a change in the Constitution is unlikely to please anyone and may even become a problem for the future. The number of Indians is increasing rapidly and could become a majority or near majority. The number of Pinoys, Myanmese and whatever tribes are also growing. How to cater to these new minorities?

We used to lump the significantly lesser minorities as Others conveniently. But if their numbers grow, would it be necessary to include in the Constitution for a Pinoy PM, a Malay PM, an Indian PM, maybe a Myanmese PM etc in the future? Would the now bigger Others be able to be grouped under Others when their numbers become significant to demand their rightful place in the island that once did not belong to them?

What would happen if Indians and Chinese are equal in numbers in the future, or nearly equal in numbers when the difference is undefined? Is there a need to define how many is necessary to be considered majority or minority? Hypthetically, what if the distribution becomes 40% Chinese, 35% Indians, 15% Malay and 10% Others? When the Chinese are no longer the absolute majority, and the minorities are not significantly lesser than the Chinese, how would the majority minority formula be defined or redefined? Would the current presumptive formula in the about to be amended Constitution still be valid and relevant?

Amending the Constitution on racial grounds is opening a can of worms that would be difficult to put back in. This is truly playing with fire as no formula is going to be right or acceptable to all. I would suggest stick to the present formula and do not try to fix something that is not broken. There is no one formula that would please everyone and it is better to stay with what we have now.

The local Indian minority (probably in cahoot with invaders from India's "Act East" policy) could be pressurising Hsien Loong to fix the racial ratio in their favour. The recent articles written by some Indian research professors in local universities, carried in the main media, are evidence of their hidden intention to become a dominant force in our society, if possible overtaking and overwhelming the present Chinese majority.

LOSING THE PLOT
how many minority presidents have we had since inception? In a figurehead role..does the quality..race.. of the president really matter. The president can neither fart or go the loo without the expressed approval of the PRESIDENT COUNCIL comprising largely of retirees n people who need a few extra bucks to rubber stamp their approval. Don't tinker with the CONSTITUTION la.. just do away with the presidency..

Frog Outside Glass said...

My Ah Kong Said: "Don't trouble trouble until trouble troubles you."

In other words, don't go looking for troubles when there is none. If you do, you are actually creating troubles for yourself, your family, your relatives and your future generations.

The Prime Minister and all his Cabinet Ministers, and the President, have been sworn in to defend and protect our Constitution. They were not sworn in to change or amend our Constitution.

If the Constitution is to be changed, in any way, it is only right that a Referendum be called to seek the mandate of the people. This is the right thing to do.

Changing the Constitution, painstakingly laid down by our forefathers, the Pioneers, is not a trivial issue. It is like digging into the foundation of a building. It requires utmost care, knowledge, skills, special tools and lots of specialist manpower. Therefore, a Referendum must be held specifically for it You cannot simply push it in as one of the main issues in a General Election.

A clear demarcation line must be drawn. A GE is to elect a government. Some voters may want PAP to continue to be the ruling government, but the same voters may not want PAP to change the Constitution. E.g. a potential PAP MP would definitely vote for PAP to be the ruling government but he may not support the PM to change the Constitution. In a Referendum, he can vote according to his wish (conscience) but in a GE he will vote for his party. And later, in Parliament, he is controlled by the WHIP and therefore has no choice but to go along the party line. Of course, it goes without saying, the party is controlled by the Secretary-General, who is also the PM.

Conclusion:

Don't play with the unknown. The ramifications will be beyond your control once you allow the unknown forces to come into play. The wise men must prevail.

@ smart cuntry, dumb PM

LHL should be aware before he flogs the racial card to death: The INDIVIDUAL is the SMALLEST MINORITY in the world.

The Office of the Presidency should be purely ceremonial---no powers to veto, to shut down parliament, to engage in anything political and should be open to everyone by LUCKY DRAW (no voting) or appointed by Parliament. The absolute power of The State should rest in PARLIAMENT only, not the govt of the day. The State (republic) is forever, the govt are only temporary custodians to be chosen by or thrown out by the people.

If Nation Building is on the cards, then an increase in GST is warranted. If not, then an increase in GST is just a plain old "money-grab". The reserves are just that: RESERVES. It should not be used. i.e. don't draw down on your CAPITAL!!

PAP is obviously not skilled at financial management.

Every year the PAP government gets on average $20 billion from land sales.

But instead of using these $20 billion to improve the lives of Singaporeans, PAP just transfers the $20 billion into the reserves and suka, suka say cannot use.

And simply say, they need to increase GST to avoid an operating budget deficit.

This is just sheer nonsense.

Who says we cannot use the $20 billion from land sales?

THE LEADER SINGAPORE DESERVES!

In a message of congratulations to Dr. Tan Cheng Bock, who announced on Friday, January 19, 2019, that he is returning to the political areana with the Progress Singapore Party, Lee Hsien Yang called Dr. Tan “the leader Singapore deserves.”

This latest salvo seems particularly pointed, given that Lee is the younger brother of Singapore’s current Prime Minister, Lee Hsien Loong.

His post reads:

“Congratulations to Tan Cheng Bock and the Progress Singapore Party. I have known Cheng Bock for many years and he has consistently put the interests of the people first. We are fortunate that he has stepped forward to serve Singapore."

Anonymous said...

Lee Hsien Yang should step forward to help Dr Tan Cheng Bock becomes the "leader Singapore deserves".

i perceive that the emperor changes the Constitutions (such as a minority president)when the emperor felt threatened to his power, or he senses dangers of a new challenger ahead (e.g. a popular peoples' choice such as Dr Tan).

I dont think it is true that the citizens want a minority president back then. The citizens only knew and believed in: .....one united nation regardless of language, race or religion...... The minority MPs (esp the Malay white MPs & Millionsters)have never raised this subject of wanting a minority president. Also, instead letting the citizens who were eligible for a president to surface, the emperor chose a would-be papresident. The president post is not a political one, and I believe no political party should be involved in the selection. I think this will not be the last constitution change for a race president. So, please be warned in the future.

@All,

All govts in all countries (including China, USA & S'pore) main objective is to preserve their own power & interests. Citizens are merely resources to be milked or sheared to maintain the country. Govts use a combination of coddling/reward & suppression/punishment to get majority of citizens to perform & behave at an acceptable level.

Some govts & leaders ACTUALLY BELIEVE that they are doing things for the best of the country & its people. And they spend ENORMOUS amounts of time & taxpayer monies in 24/7 propaganda & festivals & events & parades.

Just like how companies & bosses treat employees --- not too harsh but also not so nice. All senior management & bosses also say they do things for the best of their companies & employees. The most effective companies have MASTERED the technique of BRIBES & INCENTIVES to generate the desired results from their workers.

Just as you won't trust your boss to look after your welfare .... so too you shouldn't look to ANY govt. As I've said many times before --- ANY Oppo govt WILL continue & implement SIMILAR policies to what the PAPies are using now. You cannot change human nature.

Therefore it is MORE IMPORTANT for you to simply focus on improving your own abilities to secure the future that you want for yourself & your family.

Nobody gives a fuck about you & your family more than you yourself.

In Singapore more and more people are fuck-caring about govt .... and instead devote their time & efforts to honing whatever skills & abilities they have to create their own destinies.

Having $500K CASH in your 30s & 40s is increasingly seen as NORMAL .... and more & more Sinkies are saying "JUST $500K".

Whatever you have or don't have today .... Whatever your life is or isn't today ... YOU TRULY DESERVE IT!!!!! LOL!!!!

A Malaysian court ordered former prime minister Najib Razak to present his defence against seven counts of criminal breach of trust, money laundering and abuse of power in a case linked to SRC International.

Many in Malaysia expressed happiness with this verdict and think that Najib will finally be found guilty in a court of law over the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) scandal. Unfortunately, the reality is slightly different.

Same same, many people think that PAP is good. Unfortunately, the reality is bigly different!

Yes, WSG is right. You have to exploit the system and the existing situation set out by the PAP Government, and take care of yourself first and foremost. Nobody is going to take care of your future, your children or grandchildren. Only YOU yourself have to take care

If you have the capability and have accumulated enough wealth to emigrate to a better country or a better life, do so.

If you are unable to emigrate or prefer not to emigrate because of whatever personal reasons, then make full use of the system and situation to advance yourself financially and emotionally (ie make yourself happy).

$1 million is not enough. You need at least $2 million, as a base, to live comfortably. How to accumulate these $2 million? You have to work it out yourself.

The main point is ACTION. Plans alone without action is useless.

Why is Lee Hsien Yang's son charged with contempt of court?

Why Shanmugam gave the green light for Yale-NUS talk on 377A by Indian lawyer from India?

Shanmugam, who is himself a Indian Singaporean, said there was no significant risk of sub judice as Dr Guruswamy would merely be presenting what happened in the Indian Supreme Court when s377 was successfully challenged.

Would it not be a subtle, indirect, oblique slab in the face of our justice system and our courts?

Isn't it a double standard?

All Opposition Parties sure get at least one GRC each. Ten Opposition Parties get at least 10 GRCs. So total average means at least 50 seats out of 90.

With 50 seats, Opposition can form new coalition government. PAP sure sure sure finish liao!

Stroke-King Heng also sure lose because he insulted voters' intelligence and increased taxes.

Anonymous said...

Amending the constitution to provide for a minority President is actually not an issue. It became an issue only because Tan Cheng Bock wanted to contest the Presidency, and many are betting on his success if he stands against another PAP nominee. That would surely upset the apple cart and make the orchestra sound out of tune with TCB at odds with the PAP. What happened with Ong Teng Cheong is a case in point.

But how to disqualify TCB without a good enough reason? So they amended the constitution. In any case the PAP can nominate anyone of any race to stand, but against TCB the plan is risky?

As for the increase in GST, I always say the CPF has been hollowed out with contributions not keeping up with housing withdrawals, foreigner's withdrawals and retiree's withdrawals. With good jobs going to foreigners and hence more hefty CPF contributions, and with lower paying jobs going to locals, the situation is aggravated by the difference in CPF contributions, which is why withdrawals by foreigners become so material.

I understand this situation has been going on for the last decade or more, so is it any surprise that CPF has been hollowed out and there is a need to increase taxes like GST.

Anonymous said...

Anon 8.55

TCB lost the PE 2011 precisely because of Tan Suay Suay and Pan Chin Lian.

GE 2020 is different from PE 2011, if the opposition can prevent 3 or 4 cornered fights to preserve their chances.

This time the issues are more directly affecting those who lost their jobs to foreigners and of course the HDB lease problem, coupled with no upgrading carrots to buy votes. These will be important factors to consider.

Anonymous said...

@ 9.46pm
" ... there is a need to increase taxes like GST."

Bullshit.
The $20 billion dollars earned by PAP government from land sales is more than the money collected from GST.

Only PAP anyhow say the $20 billion must be put into reserves and cannot be spent.

What bullshit.
