When teachers are unintelligent and policy makers confusing the purpose of education

An exam paper of a primary school girl has been circulating around exposing the unintelligence of teachers, maybe one teacher setting the question and one marking, or one teacher doing both, and how a poor child that was so confused by the questions because of her exceptional intelligence ended being marked wrong for her exceptionally clear answers.

One question showed 3 pairs of ducks facing each other and the question asking how many ducks were there. What was confusing was that at the answer column, after a space for the answer was a picture of a duck facing one side. Without this picture, the answer was obvious, 6 ducks. But with the picture of a duck added, and facing one side, a child could read the question as asking how many ducks were facing the same direction as the picture next to the answer. The child put down 3 and was marked wrong.

Another question was a picture of 9 dogs in various positions and the question asked how many dogs were there. Same problem, answer should be 9. But at the answer column, after the space to put the answer was a picture of a dog lying in a particular position. And only one of the 9 dogs was lying in that position. The child's answer was 1 and was marked wrong.

Who was right and who was wrong? An average child would have given the answers that an average teacher wanted, 6 ducks and 9 dogs. An above average child would give the wrong answers as the child above, to an average thinking teacher. Whose fault is this? The painful thing is that the child would have gone bonkers trying to figure out why her answers were wrong, all because of unintelligent teachers and unintelligent questions.

Is this the reason why our education system is producing duds that cannot think outside the exam questions and could only produce unintelligent answers and thus found wanting when applying for jobs or for top positions in an organisation? We pay millions and millions for good teachers and good education system but the above situation is appalling. Something is very seriously wrong in this robotic fashion of teaching.

And I read in the papers that the school system is going to teach the child mental health and in the same breath acknowledging that teachers that have proper training on mental health would not be qualified to offer professional support to troubled children. If teachers after being properly trained may be found wanting, how much would the children learn from such classes? There are so many things that our children are expected to learn from their school curriculum that wanted to turn them into superman and superwoman but ended turning out duds and people knowing a bit of nothing in everything.

If this is the way the schools are being made to do, I would suggest a few more important topics to prepare the children other than mental illness, disappointments and accepting failures as part of their life after going through our very expensive and confusing education system. Let them know that they are not supposed to be the best in their studies as that would hurt the feelings of less academically inclined children. Let them know that being good academically is nothing to be proud off. If they are good academically they must hide in the closets and not to talk about it. Academically smart children are frown upon by society as they made others looked bad.

And prepare them to accept low paying jobs, to be underemployed, to willingly take on part time jobs, and not to feel bad that they cannot get a job and not to be angry with foreigners that went through half baked education system that did not teach them all the good things in our education system but taking all the good jobs.

The schools must tell the children that despite being taught so many things and paying so much for it, even travelling overseas to understand other people, they would not get the good jobs and may end up jobless. The good jobs would go to foreigners that paid a pittance for their makeshift education, did not go on exchange programme, but just teaching them the 3 Rs and what a basic school education is meant to teach.

Yes, the school can teach everything, from brushing the teeth, how to take a shower, how to go dating, how to use condoms etc etc. The question is what are schools meant for in the first place. With every change of minister for education, the roles of the schools have changing and deviating from its original mission. Let's get back to first principles and let the schools do what they should be doing and not all the nonsense that are good to have, that are desired by a few parents or policy makers, things that parents should be teaching them.

What do you think? Is it the problem of our education system or confused policy makers trying to do things beyond their field of expertise, not trained in education and telling the teachers what to do? Oh, the above teacher or teachers setting and marking those questions are exceptions to the rule despite being paid top dollars as the best teachers money can buy. We have many good teachers, just let them teach what the schools should be teaching. Non teaching professionals should meddle less with the teaching professions.

@ Educated Fools,

"Go to school, become an educated fool".

A good education is important. Unfortunately you won't get one in a school which adheres to "public policy".

There are several posts from way back where I properly ream out public education and its practices to just before it becomes a state-sanctioned mechanism of Nation-wide CHILD ABUSE

A system which strips kids of their individuality, kills their dreams and ambition, and FORCIBLY turns them into obedient automations who think the same, act in lock step and are incapable of standing tall as a unique individual with the abilities of self reliance and critical thought, just so that these children can grow up to serve their political and corporate MASTERS, is the public-policy education system.

Actually it depends on how a person viewed or interpret its questions. At a tender age of a 7 year old, she could answer it differently based on the orientation of the ducks & dogs position, she is quite imaginative & a bit innovative, probably a potential designer/or artistic of the future that has spatial view, a normal kid wouldn't think this way, she is a special breed which can be consulted of a different perspectives.

The right name for the Ministry is the Ministry FOR Education (MFE) and NOT MOE (Ministry Of Education), the misnomer that has been promoted by those in the Ministry FOR Education all these years. If even the right and proper name of the Ministry has gone off-tangent for the past donkey years and NOBODY, not a single highly educated scholars up there in the ivory toilets, had pointed out and correct it, then there is no need to talk about the "Educated Fools" Non-System

The right question (only one question) need to ask of the Ministry FOR Education is:

How many duds are there in the Ministry, holding top posts, including the Minister himself?

The day Pinocchio became the Minister for Education, the damage to the system since then simply extrapolated to beyond recognition. All because of the stupid "Ranking System" he brought into the Ministry from MINDEF. This is the root of all the ills and problems.

Hahaha.....

Our education system is very very very very well-known to be a 'Template Education System'!

Template questions with template answers!

This is Sg! Nice to look, not nice to eat! Sg is like that liao....

Mr RB. These questions are the SAT or what's exams for unis score admissions.

Tested your appitude or ineptitude or whichever correct answers the markers in that mood of the day.

Part 1:

Lao Hero: "Oh,the above teacher or teachers setting and marking those questions are exceptions to the rule despitebeing paid top dollars as the best teachers money can buy. "

Putting that Pri 1 qn aside, let's have a closer look at the other end of the education ladder (or spectrum) ..., take a hard look and see what could be happening ...?

Take a look at another Math problem but this time at uni Year 1 level instead of Pri 1 ...

Question:

Expand sin(ln(1+x)) to the power of 6 using Maclaurin Theorem or otherwise.

This (simple uni Math) problem think Virgo's daughter can (easiLEE) solve cos uncle (in MSN) mentioned before in 2018 ("at the cloud Montecarlo High table while munching the atas bak kwa sandwich") that she studied Math in the uni ...?

AnyboLEE who is a Mathematician will laugh at such (easy) question cos it is maciam kindergarten masak masak question at Uni Math level ...?

Unfortunately, if u test it on any undergrad or even fresh uni grad (of the MILLENNIAL G), many if not most or almost all might not know at all?

During our times, such problems are covered in Topic 1 or at most Topic 2 in the undergrad Math 101 syllabus?

But now even Year 2 onwards (MILLENNIAL G) undergrad or fresh grad dunno (for many if not most or almost all?)?

Why?

During our time, such problem has to be solved within less than 10 mins during the exam to finish the paper on time?

If Virgo or Patrait or Mati or anyboLEE dun believe, they can try approaching some current undergrad in the campus canteen (for example) and ask them to solve the problem ...?

Alternatively, by May 2020 many final year undergrad would have graduated and attending interviews ...?

If uncle RB is involved in hiring or interviewing any candidate, perhaps can interject before or during the session with such (Math) question?

For such (basic) Calculus Math problem at uni level, possibly someone with good googling skills can (easily) find the workings and solution?

Does any uncle (in MSN) has anyone in mind?

How about this Mati(啦) guy (in MSN) who seems to be an expurt in almost any field and can google almost instantly to look up anything and come up with the answer, working and explanation?

How?

Uncle RB, did u say stupdity got no cure?

Bananas are rejects that 祖国 will NOT accept into their well oiled system?

How Mati(啦)?

Got any (google) skill (and courage and basic IQ) to (take up and) solve this (simple) uni Math (calculus) problem with proper working and explanation?

加油 Mati(啦)!

U can do it!

Don't let pple talk behind your back (that you are a loud BIG mouth empty vessel (good for nothing) who only knows how to brag and talk big but have not much IQ actually)?

Put your past 10 to 20 years googling/ internet search skills to good use?

Come on ...

Don't be such a let down (and be a miao miao)?

For those at large, how about embracing 祖国, try to improve your command of the Chinese language and who knows this might be the antidote?

Yes, some of the questions are confusing to say the least. Sometimes my grandchildren showed me questions on Maths, and they really stumped me too. Blame the teachers or the MOE?

This is the kind of education system we are experimenting to make children think out of the box, as they claimed. The only box I can think of is the PAP box, which 70% or more will never learn to get out of. And mind, you teachers nowadays are all highly educated with degrees, even for pre-school children. The Chinese have the saying - 'big knife, small use'. And what do they teach in pre-school?

The only difference I can see is you now need to pay those highly qualified teachers high salaries. And of course, parents are ultimately the ones to suffer with higher and higher school fees. If Government pre-schools take this approach, and made a song and dance about the things they teach, some parents will, without saying, flock to MOE kindergartens, because the 'kiasu' mentality never dies.

One comment from someone long ago, that only overseas educated can be ministers, already devalued the worth of a degree from all our local universities. You can say and broadcast loudly that our educations system is the best in the whole universe, but it will not change the mindset that that someone created.

Changing that mindset of discrimination between elitist overseas universities and local university education is as difficult as changing the mindset of the 70% that rooted for the PAP since then, now and forever.

ls there school; place where knowledge and commonsense are transmitted as education to the Young and Unenlightened ?
I would say there is no school in Sin,
however, there are camps everywhere to train all Sinkies young and old into dog, cyborg, robot and zombie.
Look
at the Sin Regime:
other than the Female Members, almost all are paper military generals.

IS IT NOT OBVIOUS ENOUGH ?
BUT,
THE DAFT ARE OBLIVIOUS AND REMAIN INDIFFERENT TO THE EDUCATION THAT TRAIN SINKIES INTO OBEDIENT AND BLIND LOYAL DOGS.
LOLX.

The above example of exam papers is telling Sinkie children don't try to be too smart. Just do what the teachers said and you will pass with A*s.

Question:
Why a primary one exam paper got circulated and go viral BUT noboLEE paid attention to uni exam papers (or if not at the very least JC exam papers?)?

Why?

Why?

Why?

How about the Math problem

sin(ln(1+x))

posted @11am, 6 Mar 2020?

Why noboLEE discusses about it?

Why parents didn't discuss about it or circulate it or cause it to go viral (AS EXACTLY EXPECTED?)?

Think about it?

Why only talked about Pri One Math qn and heated debate online and even going viral?

But uni level or JC exam qns all tiam tiam, "aye kow", become "dumb", "mute", "哑巴"...?

What does this reflect or tell you?

Things can go wrong in Primary school but everything is PERFECT in uni or JC ?

Or actually the reverse?

Things are even MORE "horrendously wrong" at higher level?

But how come no sinkie parent talk about it or heated debate in the internet or the exam qn going viral?

Why?

Why?

Why?

Why almost like clock work every year only Pri Sch exam qns are surfaced online (but NOT those at higher level especially JC or uni)?

Why are sinkie parents so obsessed with Pri Sch level (only)?

Think about it?

At JC or uni level nothing going wrong?

Or could be the opposite?

Much much worst?

Why are sinkie parents only chipping in at Pri Sch level?

不知道?

Uncle RB, stupidity got cure?

(PS: Opinion - The day when such things happen and higher level exam qns are causing heated debate among sinkie parents is when sinkieland has (really) arrived at First World standard? But if only talking about Pri Sch exam qns? What does that tell you? Also First World standard? Or actually still stucked at Third World? But NOBOLEE realised it? All in self delusion? Any comment? AnyboLEE? Patrait? Virgo? Lao Hero or Lau 大(龙哥)?No?)

So many silly questions.
Parents and even educated adults talk abt Primary Level Education ONI is bcos Primary student needs more guidance.
And also most parents and adults are themselves knowledgeably at the Elementary Level.
At Secondary n Higher Level, student tends to be less dependent on parental guidance in studies. ln fact, most will want their guardians not to interfer in their studies.
At Tertiary Level, most subjects r beyond average folks.
As for the Sin Education System,
if one is to refer it all the Way bk to post independence, maybe in the lnitial Days, the Focus was to educate n enlighten.
THE LAST OVER 4 DECADES WAS SPENT ON INDOCTRINATION TO AN AGENDA.
KNOWLEDGE LEARNING IS UP TO THE INDIVIDUALS TO PURSUE AT HIS AND HER OWN INITIATIVE AND INTEREST.
Now,
there are more
zombie, cyborg, robot and puppet than ever, in Sin.
We need humans from lndia, China, Europe, Middle Eaat and Africa to keep Sin going.
The Local Species are behind time.
