China has ordered a Canadian diplomat to leave the country, in a tit-for-tat move hours after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government expelled a Chinese envoy from his nation.
Jennifer Lalonde, a diplomat from Canada’s consulate in Shanghai, has until Saturday to leave the country, according to a Tuesday statement from the Chinese Foreign Ministry. China said the move was a “reciprocal countermeasure” to Canada’s “unreasonable behavior” and it reserved the right to make further responses.
China’s foreign minister Qin Gang also rebuked the American ambassador Nicholas Burns in Beijing for what he said was Washington’s support of Taiwan and indicated that his side wanted concessions from the U.S. in return for improved lines of communication sought by the White House.
“We cannot focus on communication while China is constantly being suppressed and contained,” Mr. Qin told Burns. “You cannot say one thing and do another.”

Truss May Stay in Taiwan Longer Than Her Premiership - Beijing
Former UK Prime Minister Liz Truss - Britain’s shortest-serving PM - has announced plans to travel to Taiwan next week, where she will meet with top officials and deliver a speech.
Truss resigned as prime minister last year after just 45 days in office – making her stint on Downing Street the shortest in UK history.
Beijing says wryly that if Truss stays in Taiwan for a while, she may stay longer than her premiership.
