Singapore preparing to deal with ‘5,000 new Covid-19 cases a day or maybe more’: Lawrence Wong

- Finance Minister Lawrence Wong said just 0.2 per cent of infected cases will need ICU treatment, but a much larger 10 per cent of them will need hospital beds as they are vulnerable
- Hence, Singapore is bolstering its hospital capacity to cope with a possible surge to more than 5,000 daily cases
- Once capacity is ramped up, cases will remain high as that is what it means to live with Covid-19, said Mr Wong
- Acknowledging people’s frustrations at the latest measures, he said the Government had “no choice” as the healthcare system is under strain

SINGAPORE — The Government is ramping up resources in order to prepare for the possibility of more than 5,000 new Covid-19 infections a day, of which about 10 per cent, or 500 people, may need to be warded for at least a week, Finance Minister Lawrence Wong said on Monday (Sept 27).

“We want to be able to deal with a scenario where cases surge up to 5,000 new cases a day or maybe more,” said Mr Wong, the co-chair of the ministerial task force on Covid-19, during an interview with Bloomberg Television.

Mr Wong was responding to a question by anchor Haslinda Amin, who had queried him about what is needed for Singapore’s economic reopening to continue.

Explaining how the task force arrived at this parameter, Mr Wong said that although 0.2 per cent of Covid-19 positive cases require treatment in intensive care units (ICUs), around 50 times that number of infected cases require close monitoring in the hospital as they could be older, have serious symptoms or comorbidities.

Said Mr Wong: “To provide timely care for the persons who need ICU treatment, the doctors need to admit about 10 per cent of infected persons to our hospitals because these are the ones that the doctors would triage and identify as the more vulnerable persons.”

On Sunday, Singapore recorded 1,939 new Covid-19 cases, including five imported cases, the highest of the pandemic so far.

If Singapore reaches 5,000 cases daily, that would mean hospitals would need to take in 500 people who would need stays of at least a week, said Mr Wong.

It is not just 5000 cases, but exponentially increase thereafter. The virus is now spreading at insane rate. So the next number is 10,000 cases , 20,000 cases ? Who know if we already hit 10,000 since our government is world famous for manipulating number ? Remember it not longer about staying hospital, but quarantine at home as well ?

How conveniently for them to say when sinkies need to go for quarantine for 10 days whenever they and their family that live under one root get the virus. He thinkk that everyone is paid like millionaires out of taxpayer'money ? Once you get quarantinue, there's possibility you get to lose your job due to replacement, and you find all kind of excuse that company terminate you even if you are top performant because company cannot afford to standstill while you are under quarantine.

For every 1000 cases a day, all the overly, obscenely, and unconscionably paid Ministers' salaries musf be cut by 10 percent.

If daily infections reached 5000 cases on any day, all the Ministers' salaries must be cut by 50 percent.

Otherwise, they are not motivated enough to ensure the good health and safety of the citizens.

They are taking things for granted and anyhow experimenting, without much serious thoughts given to the whole Pandemic.

Instead of following China's successful method of dealing with the Covid-19, these idiots are following the US and UK by deliberately exlosing the population to the Delta Variants, by purposely importing them from India.

What kind of leaders are they?

You notice the same pattern from these articles that support Singapore. Nothing is mention about quarantine period that affect job. How so convenient ? It is not quarantine has no effect on financial, mental, health.

As usual, turn negative news into positive news is the forte of Singapore government. If you step on shit, they will tell you it is chocolate.

This is why having critical thinking is important and why government is suppressing it.

5,000 in hospitals is just the more serious cases that will need hospitalisation. There will be more on home recovery or isolation if their infections is not leading to serious issues. The target right now is 50% will be on home recovery or isolation but like all others, is a moving target. So, what is the actual number that we are talking about?

Yesterday, two fully vaccinated patients died and no unvaccinated had kicked the bucket. So, how do we read the situation and how do we interpret that in terms of protection against serious complications?

A mild tapping of the brakes to slow the rate of rise from the mask down
socialisation with many and diverse contacts.

This is to enable the backend to catch up.

Folks should remember that with the infectiousness of Delta, we are all bound to meet the virus sooner or later, well within the next 6 months.

We may even meet it multiple times.

The vaccinated among us can take comfort that meeting the virus would be like having a 3rd shot booster. We are already well protected against serious or severe illness or death, and meeting the virus helps remind our immune system what the target looks like.

The unvaccinated among us will have to accept the responsibility both to themselves and to others around them. Their risk of serious illness is higher, unless they are young, and their likelihood of infecting others is also higher bcos they carry the infectious virus for longer.

We can track the caseload as well as mobility data to assess the likely trajectory.

We can relax further, if we can clear the 3rd shot boosters for most of the early vaccination responders.

Many parents are understandably anxious about their unvaccinated young kids.

That will come - it’s a matter of 2-3 months as we track data elsewhere, preferably including field data from others.

We can afford to wait and track as the pre-puberty kids below 12 years old have very strong and fast 1st line defences against the Covid virus.

This is quite unlike the flu virus, which is dangerous to both the very old and the very young.

So if this were a new flu virus pandemic, we would be extremely worried for our young kids, esp those under 5.

But the Covid virus is like the SARS or MERS virus - dangerous to the old and very mild for the young below 12.

True, we do have kids with weakened immune system, either from illnesses like leukemia, or from genetic causes which affect their 1st line immune response.
There are some signs that Down syndrome is a higher risk factor for serious Covid illness, perhaps for genetic reasons which scramble their immune response.

Leukemia is the cancer of the blood, which messes up the immune response bcos most of the 1st line response depends on the white blood cells and various other defence cells patrolling in the blood.

So for a small minority of pre-teen children, there is cause for concern.

The USA Government is now warning it's citizens travelling here that Singapore and Hong Kong are dangerous territories. This is just the low end of the expected infection rate resulting from living with the virus by opening widely. Are we achieving the wrong objective?

What will other countries be telling their people when the situation gets more serious? I do not remember Singapore being designated as dangerous territory before. We are charting dangerous territory now.

Citizen's warning are always taken as noises to be brushed aside, and like opposition voices in Parliament, will always be drowned out by sheer weight of the power of the authority.

When outside forces, like the USA, take up the issue, and by association the followers towing the line, it is going to carry some weight and make some sense for the powers that be to see some light.

For local consumption the threat and argument of loss of jobs and business suffering carry much weight. But these issues mean nothing to outside forces like the USA. Countries suffering or dying is not their business. They only care for their citizens, which they have to answer for.

At the way things are going, Singapore would soon become a basket case in this pandemic. And the only countries that would allow their citizens to visit Singapore would be the basket case countries.

The idiots have chosen to turn Singapore into a basket case country to rub shoulders with other basket case countries to see who is more basket than the other.

Stupidity has no cure.

Corrupted Female Afghan judges are being hunted by the people whom they have wrongly convicted.

This is what happens to those Corrupt Officials and Self-Serving Ministers when the tides changed and political powers changed hands from the Victimisers to the Victimised.

The Victimisers while in power usually never think of such consequences when they were behaving high almighty arrogantly and haughtily.

Karma will catch up in time. Never can escape ..... Even last minute prayers will not help.

If Singapore becomes a basket case, then all the PAP Millionaire Ministers shall be put into one single basket and be thrown into the sewage system for them to eat some of their own shits that they have been dishing out to all of us for the past 56 years ...... Time for the arrogant and self-serving bullies to bite the bullets is very near....

5 seniors die from Covid-19 complications; 2,236 new cases in S'pore
All five had various underlying medical conditions, said MOH
.- ST

So is Ong's Minstry trying to pin blame for the 5 old peoples' deaths on their own medical conditions?

Knowing old sick people are likely to die if they contract COVID, whether vaccinated or not, shouldn't ONG and his MTF PAP 5G colleagues be adopting the Zero-COVID approach instead of their reckless and dangerous living-with-the-virus endemic plan with disregard for human life?

Even the USA on Monday announced to its citizens in travel alert to avoid Singapore as the city city is now dangerous. With China also warning its citizens to avoid going to Singapore, the word's 2 largest economies have now shunned Singapore - that's the world's verdict on the short-sighted PAP 4G elites's ill-conceived idea for confronting the coronavirus.

The basket case countries are now very happy waiting for Singapore to open its arms to welcome all their basket cases into Singapore since no other countries would let their people come to Singapore.

Changi Airport would be very happy overflowing with basket case people. Singapore's economy would be booming with basket case countries investing here. More jobs would be created by basket case people.

Heard of what it is like living in a leper's colony?

Singapore Virus Debate Sowing Rare Disquiet in Ruling Party - Bloomberg Sept 29

Anxiety, confusion grow as infections climb in Singapore despite having one of the world’s highest vaccination rates.

Senior members of Singapore’s ruling People’s Action Party are concerned that mixed signals from the country’s virus task force are giving the appearance of divisions that could lead to rare infighting, people familiar with the situation said.

The party cadres, who decide which individuals are admitted to the PAP’s top decision making body, were concerned perceptions of a split could spur members to choose sides in the informal contest to succeed Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, whose plans to step aside were delayed amid the pandemic after his heir-apparent bowed out earlier this year. They said the prime minister or another senior member should take charge and show decisiveness, according to the people.
