FCF is not just balancing of employer worker interests

Rip Van Winkle woke up after a long stupor to find a pool of local PMEs underemployed and unemployed while foreigners of all shades are taking over their jobs. What if Winkle continues to be asleep, would anyone know of this problem or would anyone recognize that there is a problem. What is the meaning of being proactive, being able to see over the horizon?

Now we know there is a problem, and the problem has grown to a point that nice talk is no longer an option. But they are going to talk nice to the employers who have exploited the situation at the expense of alienating a group of experienced and well educated citizens to the fringe of the country’s development. Industries have been taken over or dominated by foreigners to the point that they could not find locals good enough or available to fill even low level positions. And millions of foreigners are now living among the citizens and their sudden departure could create a social and economic crisis.

The influx and employment of foreigners in great numbers and the exclusion of citizens in vital and essential services and jobs are no small matters. There are strategic and security implications at stake. A country that is populated by foreigners and employed in essential and strategic industries is like allowing the foreigners to have a stranglehold on its security and national interests.

Total Defence is not limited to the uniform groups but also to the economy, the well being of workers/citizens and the sustainability of the economy to continue to run without being held at ransom by foreigners. Do I have to say more when key positions are occupied or dominated by foreigners who could do harm to the country? Do I have to say more when key industries are owned by foreigners that could undermine the nation’s interest in time of crisis?

Getting our citizens to be fully employed and in essential and strategic jobs and industries must be part of our national defence. Well, a good start has been made. According to Lim Swee Say, ‘The next step, he added, would be to work with the companies to put in place a programme to nurture local talent over the next few years.’ Things should improve with this programme and over the next few years it will be better. Thank God they are finally doing something.

For real?

COE prices have been very high and they have been doing something all day long.

Can somebody tell all readers what was the prices of COE in early 2013 and the COE in Oct 2013 now?

Did all these big wayang make any difference in the end to COE prices?

Are you blind or plain daft?

They have been doing a lot of things in the properties market including 9 rounds of cooling measures. What is the outcome hah?

They have been doing a lot of things to lower the cost of living for lower income families but still what happen to the GINI coefficient hah? Getting any better? Latest report in TNP more and more families living in smaller than toilet size cargo vans. Why hah? No $$$$$ is it? Imagine one whole family of 4 squeezing into less than 15 sq ft of available space at the back of a mini goods van? Is this the outcome advocated by Mati-Lah ... what? and his comrades? Taxing the country to the limit, unrestrained open borders, open legs, use the collected revenues to splurge big time on some doubtful toys a few hundred millions a piece excluding future maintenance costs, spare parts, weapons etc, importing so called super expensive global talents from bankrupted countries to train Sinkieland's next generation and formulate Sinkieland's policies, etc etc. RB, are you sure "Rip van Winkle" woke up already and not still in heavily alcohol intoxicated and drug induced hallucination stage?

Why need to do anything at all, when the strongest opposition still not ready to be govt by 2016?

Whether strategic industries and services controlled by foreign sources also bo pian tio bo?

Can Sinkies do anything to make WP stronger and ready to be govt?

If cannot, and whatever it is, Sinkies also bo pian, tio bo?

Errrr, i think red bean forgot to mention that the new law on employers only serve as a measure, if you have read companies that sort of sign that agreement are around 2000 but we have like 100000 over companies MNC, SMC and of course the middle of the pact, so the % is extremely small.

As for the law, it does not really specify and drastic action if they do not comply.

The MRT is another problem which has since awared like 1.05 billion dollars worth of contract, but the distribution are all to foreign companies and even the one that was last awared a contract which is local but had some connection with the stats board.

So, Rip van Winkle or Jack the Ripper.......or whoever, you decide, the 2nd tier leaders, don't feel, don't know, don't bother and don't care, its just basic common sense not to put foreigners in charge of our infrastructure but, after saying that, if you look a bit closer, our mp's are they all locals?????.

Talk no use. Comment no use. Only when somebody become a leader of a party that can contest 100% seats at the next election.

Only then will 60% respect such a party and vote for it. Then he can become the PM. Then got use, tio bo?

Anonymous said...

RB, u know the majority of sinkies only look after their own interest lar. They only kpkb when it affect them. 60% still not affected yet

Even when the leader has been change, he does not actually has the power, because of the NMP, they too can vote on issue.

Immoral and totally heartless! Inclusive my foot! Many Sinkies work so hard often with blood and sweat!!! Hard earned $$$$$ all spent on children’s education. If you happen to come across a no carchng white beans, you can say aloud that the parents must have been MIWs. Most likely by then, the mob will swarm round and spit at these no carchng white beans whose only SINS were to be born offpsrings of some dead MIWs.

>> Getting our citizens to be fully employed and in essential and strategic jobs and industries must be part of our national defence.

Agree, with provisos and only in the first part. Part time or casual, employment is employment. Some form of employment is desirable over the stark alternative of total unemployment.

There is no reason why "strategic" jobs and industries cannot be outsourced to the best choices as made by managers. It doesn't have to be "local". Adequate background checks and security measures are now universal -- today's landscape being GLOBAL in nature. Also levels of commitment and attitude can be weeded out in the multilevel interview process. Most "strategic" jobs nowadays have more than one interview, and the process is quite exhaustive.

Getting full employment amongst Singaporeans is not impossible -- IF -- the level of job snobbery decreases amongst the Singaporean job seekers.

It is a normal human tendency to over value oneself and to overestimate one's abilities, and these natural human traits are quite obvious amongst Singaporeans. It is no surprise that they think they are "entitled" to the job of their choice in Singapore, for the simple reason that they are "Singaporeans", and that they ought to be given a job above the foreign competitor simply because of some undefined "right" which trumps the employers' requirements and preferences. Under closer examination, it comes as no surprise that such thinking is PURE NONSENSE, with no facts or even a valid philosophical abstract to support such ideas.

That being said, my opinion is that within a modern society with a vibrant economy: UNEMPLOYMENT IS VOLUNTARY, usually self-imposed due to job snobbery; and emotionally interpreted as "someone else's fault" -- a COMPLETE dereliction of personal responsibility.

Anyone who REALLY WANTS a job in Singapore, can get one. No, you might not get the job of your choice, but you'll get a job according to what your productivity is worth in the labour market.

Fact of life: we cannot always have what we want, no matter how deeply or desperately we want it.

Got reality check?

Matilah, please lah. In the City of Sin, every Sinkie has a 30 year mortgage hung on their neck. Part time or short term contract will put them under severe stress when the monthly mortgage cannot wait.

And this statement of yours is pure naivity, 'There is no reason why "strategic" jobs and industries cannot be outsourced to the best choices as made by managers. It doesn't have to be "local". Adequate background checks and security measures are now universal -- today's landscape being GLOBAL in nature.'

In strategic industry like weapons and essential services, you can outsourced to outsiders? No matter how you checked, when money is the motive, they could be bought to sabo you at the moment you needed them most.

And don't think Sinkies are daft. They will vote out any govt that does not take care of their interests foremost. You cannot cheat them everyday and think you can get away with it.

The Sinkies will boot out any govt if the govt is not for them. And this is determined by the Sinkies, not by the govt.

Ⓜatilah $ingapura⚠️ said...

redbean,

Please lah redbean. Nothing either of us say is going to change the fact of the asymmetry: The person hiring ultimately calls the shots, and global competition with workers from foreign lands is THE REALITY -- whether you choose to accept it or not.

Whether part time or temporary, having a job is less stressful than having no job and bills to pay. The 30 year mortgage can be used as a source of existential terror leading to hopelessness and helplessness, or it can also be a swift kick in the backside to get one MOTIVATED to keep...as Lee Kuan Yew put it... "Striving and driving".

By now it should be obvious that it isn't what happens to you but how you interpret and handle what happens to you which determines your "happiness" (desired mental state) or lack thereof. Most folks I see here are stuck in their negative mental loops of VICTIM HOOD and learned helplessness. They darag themselves down, and anyone else who's unlucking enough to be affected by their TOXICITY. Note: Just look at the lame attacks directed at me -- complete victimhood-no-reposnibility morons who obviously deserve to be in a little "pain" :-)) Self inflicted and unaware. (damn entertaining)

There's no excuse in Singapore for not being able to find a job. Any job.

Got existential crisis?

Ⓜatilah $ingapura⚠️ said...

P.S. redbean,

BTW, in the early days Singapore "outsourced" its weapons maintenance/ manufacturing to the Israeli's, Swiss, USA and Britain. Many of these foreigners were stationed in Singapore. Sure, locals were trained, but the foreigners stayed on.

Your argument about "strategic jobs" has no basis in reality.

Chua Chin Leng aka redbean said...

Not really. In those days, we were like beggars. We were completely dependent on the foreigners. Now we have achieved certain level of self sufficiency.

It is in the interest of every country to be self sufficient and independent of foreigners as far as military equipment and essential services are concerned, unless there is no choice like some dumb countries that cannot produce their weapons and can be held hostage or at ransom by their weapon suppliers in time of war.

Please lah, just because we drink urine and eat shit in the past when we were poor did not justify that we should do the same when we don't have to.

@ MATI 11.06am :/ Your argument about "strategic jobs" has no basis in reality. /

GOT PROOF?

Ⓜatilah $ingapura⚠️ said...

redbean,

You are appealing to emotions more than you are being objective.

There isn't the remotest hint of a war anywhere on the horizon or beyond. War doesn't come "unannounced" -- there's always a lengthy lead up to war beginning with a total breakdown in diplomacy.

Your argument still has no legs. In fact it reminds me of Lee Kuan Yews provocative statements of not allowing Singapore Malays to fly jets or man machine gun nests.

You are jumping at shadows lah. Relax, have a few drinks and a cigar or two. Go for a massage at one of the many "health centers" in Singapore, and get some "attention" (hormat senjata!) from an exotic foreigner. :-)

Ⓜatilah $ingapura⚠️ said...

@anon 1123:

You obviously don't know how to construct proper arguments.

The burden of proof is on those who assert the affirmative, i.e. make the POSITIVE claim.

If the positive claim is: "strategic jobs should only be held by locals", then it is up to the party who asserts the positive claim to come up with TESTABLE positive evidence to support their claim.

Go and learn some critical thinking man, before you embarass yourself further and make your cuntree look bad.

Chua Chin Leng aka redbean said...

Matilah, you are trying to defend a loose or clumsy logic of yours. What proof you need? You want subcon your military hardware to foreign contractors? And you believe they will be on your side when you need time?

You don't compromise your national security to foreigners when you can do it yourself and have full control of it. By the time you put it to a test with the foreign contractors you could have lost your country.

I'm not the one making the claim. I don't require any proof. :-)

You want to prove your case, go ahead, if not, nevermind. Like I said nothing you or I say will make a difference in the real world. If the "strategic jobs" go to foreigners, like they have in the past, so be it. You care? Then it is your problem (even without the evidence your claim so sorely needs to support it). I don't care, because I see NO PROBLEM!

I just enjoy Hotel Singapore, knowing full well that there is no threat of imminent war, and if there is, I'll just fuck off back to Australia :-)

Relac lah. Even though you still haven't made your case, have a beer lah.

Chua Chin Leng aka redbean said...

We are all very relac talking about this. As a person who does not bother about this country, you can enjoy the best you can make out of it, and even if this country goes to the dogs, you won't mind either.

We Singaporeans who believe that this is our only country, our home, would mind and would not want the country to go to the dogs or be sold away.

Our premises, perspectives and interests are different. I can see your point of view. But I have my point of view based on my interests and relationship with this country of mine. Still mine or ours, I hope.

redbean, There are several reasons I don't worry about this cuntree.

1. "Worry" is a useless emotion. Nothing is achieved by worrying except make yourself feel worse.

2. There are many capable people running the show in Singapore to keep it awesome.

3. There are many people auditing the people running the show in Singapore.

4. The world's media, financial sector and multinational business communities have eyes on Singapore 24/7/365 -- this constant vigilance ensures that the people running the show have to PERFORM to a high standard -- which they do.

5. The cuntree is not going to the dogs. Evidence points to it becoming more internationalized and more awesome.

6. No one is "selling your cuntree" lah. Stop being a panic merchant.

7. You have an existential relationship with Singapore, as do I. I would say I'm a heck of alot more UPBEAT than you about the future. I want Singapore to grow, to be spectacular, to increase its awesomeness by several orders of magnitude.

You want it to return to its past, when life was a lot more less awesome and tougher. Now you can enjoy the results of your enterprise and have THE BEST the world has to offer in Singapore.
