With Ukraine in NATO any attack by Russia on Ukraine would mean dragging the whole of NATO into direct conflict with Russia. The USA wanted the expansion of NATO into Ukraine to give them an opportunity to site nukes nearer to Moscow and strategically to force the EU to ditch Russian energy for the USA to sell more expensive gas to the EU. The USA now got what they wanted in energy sales to the EU, indirectly also forcing EU countries to de-industrialize to benefit the USA. How stupid were the Europeans to fall for the stunt.
