Racism is a very serious accusation

Local playwright Alfian Sa’at has expressed revulsion at a photo of Raffles Institution (RI) donning blackface and mocking their schoolmate for his complexion. Mr Alfian, who is perhaps most well-known for his plays ‘Cooling Off Day’ and ‘Cook a Pot of Curry’, is an RI alumnus himself.

The group blackface photo, which was taken in 2016, shows a student who is believed to be of Sri Lankan descent squatting in front of a paper bag that bears his name and the words “whitening kit”. About 10 schoolmates wearing black facial masks can be seen surrounding him, holding various items like a bottle of Nivea whitening lotion, deodorant, fake cash and a photo shopped poster of the movie Slumdog Millionaire.

Above was posted in www.theindependent.sg.

George Floyd and many black Americans and coloured people were victims of extreme racism in the USA and some European countries, including UK, France and Australia. Racism in these countries are very real and can cost lives or being beaten up, not just for fun. They don't poke fun at the colour of a person's skin, but will beat up the person or abuse and kill him/her.

In Singapore we often heard of racism being used when things like the above photo is shown.  A fancy dress nite at a Dinner and Dance when participants put up brown faces was also attacked as racism.  A promotional ad when a person of a different race dressed up as different races was also deemed as racism. I can understand the sensitivity of people who perceived that their colour has become the brunt of a joke. But in many of these cases in Singapore, racism was the furthest in the thoughts of the people involved, like the photo above. Many of the Chinese Singaporeans are oblivious of race. To them they have no race except a nationality, Singaporean. They have accepted the four official racial groups as part and parcel of life here and never think anything more than to it.

Look at the above photo again. These are young innocent youths were just having a little fun among themselves. Racism was the furthest thing in their minds. There was no intent to hurt, to belittle their friend or to be racist. To flag this up as racism is going a bit too far. It is mischief. Do not be consumed by fakery and false accusation. Racism is hate, intentional hate. There must be the element of intent to be labelled as racism. Grow up.

Many of the young Chinese here do not identify themselves as Chinese. They have no race in their vocabulary or in their lives.  They only see themselves as Singaporeans. How can such people with no race be racist? Please do not demonise these youths as racists. Using whitening cream is not racist. Women of all colours use them. Many Chinese women use them to be fairer in the name of vanity.

While we should be sensitive to the feelings of the minorities, the minorities must also be sensitive to the majority and should not abuse the race label to smear or attack the majority when there was no intent to be racist or to cause hurt. Does anyone hear the statement, 'Black is beautiful'? Would the blacks be offended by this term? They coined it themselves.

Every colour is beautiful in its own way. Every colour is ugly when the intent is mischievous. Yellow has also been used as a racist term against the Chinese. But the Chinese would not react every time the word yellow is used. Everyone should be proud of his own ethnic and racial identity and colour. One should only be offended when there is intent to offend by referring to one's ethnicity, culture, religion or colour in acrimonious ways.

It is equally dangerous to live in a society where there is intolerance and people screaming racism at the slightest reference to race and colour. Often the people screaming racism are the real racists themselves and playing victims to attract attention. If the slightest reference to colour is offensive, then no one should be allowed to mention black, brown, yellow, white or use such colours to represent anything in life as they are offensive to sensitive people.

Be sensitive yes, but it is equally important to note the intent. Colour is about everything in life. Colour makes life interesting and provides varieties for expression. Colour itself is never meant to be offensive. It is only offensive when a mischievous person is using it with the intent to hurt. Stop being ultra sensitive when it is unnecessary and unintentional. Face racism when it is real and speak up against it. Do not misuse or abuse the term racism as a weapon to stir shit.

PS. If one does not understand the meaning of racism, look at the USA, Australia, look at Malaysia and Indonesia, where one can be beaten up or killed because of the colour of his skin, where racism is institutionalised, sanctioned by law in govt policies. Do not go and pick on the young having a little fun among themselves and called that racism. It is irresponsible and dangerous.

Mr RB

Recent Hari Raya MPs greetings posters at their various constituencies wishing the Malay Residents their New Year had one AMK GRC MP Ms Lee Bee Wah wearing a tudang in traditional Malay Baju Kurong.

Think someone made a comment on this and she replied that she is respecting the Malay Community by wearing a Tudang.

No more sound and fury after this.

Ms Lee Bee Wah is now a Maverick PAP MP who do her activities out of the norm box which other PAP MPs would not want to jeopodise their rice bowls.

She asked pointed questions to the Ministers and also straight talk the problems and grouses of her constituents boldy in the Parliament.

Quite a nunber of issues regarding the CB unfair phasing of businesses that are of the same business but at different phase of timings.

Think she knew her time is up with their renewal of their Scholar and BGs candidates in the coming GE.

A pain in their arses for the Ministers.

Ex-Malaysian usually more bold and direct as compared to our just follow the instructions and procotols sinkies MPs. Obedience is Grace and virtues till they became exactly like Robots.

To be frank. Usually the minority races with their own assumed inferiority complex behaved very sensitive to this What's racist synonym.

They are just too sensitive thinking that whatsoever acts or even fun we created are insulting them.

Take for example, our poor Dennis kena bombarded.

How's about Gurmit Singh who portrayed a Chinkee and spoke rotten Eng Kok?

We just simply smiled and even a hit in Mat Land.

Chinese are the most colour blind.See so many Chinkee women marrying all sorts of races.

In China, see the Chinese hospitality in welcoming many coloured people in their midst.

It's the other races with their built in prejudices against the Chinese.

MacPherson MP Tin Pei Ling said Thursday that Singapore is among the top countries in terms of relief given per citizen, at S$23,225 per capita.

I, unemployed, received only $600, and within weeks I received bill to pay $630 for MdeiShield Life premium. So I pay all back plus $30!

So who really benefited from the more than S100 billion taken from Singapore's reserves during this coronavirus period?

Poor Anon 10.26

You are absolutely correct.

These bullshits what's Solidarity and Resilience and what's care budgets only for businesses and the bosses.

Ordinary folks chicken feed

Goldfish eyes can said have to protect jobs so that the families can still benefits from bread winners employment.

You think the employers with these subsidies will still keep their workers if economy really goes Real bad.? ?

When times are good, these employers squandered their profits amongst themselves and their shareholders NOT putting into Reserves for these types of contingencies.

Earn ten millions in a year they ploughed with all their might all the loots.

Just earn five millions less or even at a loss, they start sacking and firing the workers.

Calling it restructuring. Bullshits. You think a guy works for 20 to 30 years in a particular line can simply switch to another line by going for traineeships?

What's bullshits Tripartite Unions and Management and Govt.

Olden days Chinese towkays earned ten dollars save five dollars.

Even in bad times, they ploughed back their savings and even no sack their workers.

Thru thick and thin.

Surviving together to better times. Real Solidarity.

Nowadays, ang mohs sais. Hire and Fire with no human empathy.

Never know that the workers are the ones who created Wealth for them.

The TOP only changkol as much as possible for themselves.

Why support these Dorm operators who made tons of monies during the past years and now bailed them out with tax payers MONIES?

Also, these migrant workers under these employers on tax payers monies to pamper them.

One neigbour lamented that his whole life never even on a cruise luxuxry ship.

These migrants workers dancing in the Emperor State rooms just waiting to have food served to them.

All these Reserves as built up the older generations should be used to help our own deserving citizens.

Ah Kong monies take people's backside skins for their faces.

Also without all these wasteful subsidies, no need draw so much out.

All three just for votes buying in the coming GE.

What's a great opportunity.

One stone kills two birds.

Where got S$23,225? Is she fooling voters by pulling a fast one? I think I probably know where she got that figure. It is the total S$100 billion taken from the reserves divided among all Singaporeans and PRs. For retirees like me, we got the crumbs. The bulk goes to business entities.

It is just like saying Singaporeans have the highest per capita income, but the argument is skewed, because the income of 1% of the super rich probably inflated the overall average of the rest of the population to make it so good. How many are earning hundreds of millions in GIC and Temasek? How many are collecting millions among the ministers?

If Singaporeans are that high per capita income earners, how come 60% are said to be needing help if they are jobless for just six months?

U don't know meh?

Hahahahahaha.......
