Change the Singapore Dream – Kishore

This call sounds like insanity. If it is to dream for the moon, perhaps it may be more agreeable. But to dream to downgrade and give up cars as a convenience, is like telling Sinkies to downgrade to a 4 rm HDB flat that cost $1m and only 60 sq m. But what Kishore did was to be provocative, to think tangentially, to walk the unbeaten path. It is always refreshing to think a bit wild, to be unorthodox, to sound a bit insane but to get people out of their comfort zone.

The only weakness in this dream is that he forgot that this is an unnecessary dream if the planners did not go bonkers to follow the economists blindly. We need critical mass to have a sustainable economy. And that critical mass was 2m, then 4m, then 5m then 7m then 10m. And we can build to heaven’s high or deep down and get closer to living hell. Sure the possibilities are unlimited given the expansiveness of the human mind. But there is a cost involved, just like the insane Medishield Life to cover all and sundry, young and old, healthy and sick. Who is going to pay for it or where is the money coming from?

Car ownership is a luxury, and more than a luxury, it is freedom to travel, it is progress, it is what human beans strived to better themselves and their way of life. It liberates the constraints of time and space. Why all the cries for progress, for economic growth, for technology only to abandon it because some economists got their numbers mixed up and forgot the good from the bad? Do we want economic growth only to abandon our dream of car ownership? Do we want to abandon the dream for landed properties or owning a 1000 sq m home or bigger? Do we want to dream of only eating in foodcourts and hawker centres? It is regressive thoughts surely. Why do we ever think of downgrading, downsizing, giving up the good stuff and con ourselves that less is good, no cars is good, smaller flats, the smaller the better? Idiotic isn’t it?

But if I am the rich and powerful, and living in a 5000 sq m homes and owning a garage of luxury cars, I would not mind conning the daft that no cars is good, and living in a dog’s kennel is quality living.

Kishore said we have to give up the Singapore dream of owning cars, he fell short of saying we also have to give up dreaming of a 1000 sq m 5 rm home as well. And I quote, ‘We have to give up this insane dream of owning a car and replace it with an ecosystem of a public transport system that makes it irrational to own a car.’  I would like to suggest that we should give up this insane dream of a bigger population and replace it with a friendly ecosystem and allowing more people to own cars and living in bigger homes. Just cut the shit in growing the population to consume more of the little land we have. In this case, smaller population is good, and there are many countries that are small in population but doing much better than us and with much better quality of life. And their land mass is also bigger, with more space for living and recreation.

The insane dream is 6.9m that will make life a living drudgery to many average Sinkies. They will be reduced to slaves of the economic system while a small elite will continue to live in sprawling landed homes and owning several cars and laughing at the idiocy of the easily conned Sinkies.

There is a need to recalibrate where we are going and how not to destroy our ecosystem and make it more favourable to living than to working for the sake of working. Yes the planners need to change their insane dream and come down from high heavens to uplift everyone to a higher plateau. They need to plan in such a way that there will be more space for living, for bigger homes and for more cars and more roads. And please, no need creative shit to down size the furniture to make the small space look bigger.

The moment the Sinkies start to accept to downgrade their dreams, they are heading towards a colony of mindless ants or bees, busy, busy, busy all for nothing. We must have dreams, big and better dreams for a better tomorrow.

KNN, why we work so hard for?

Glad to have you back on local issues, RB. No hard feelings. Great piece. In case no one noticed, they are trotting out their state paid hacks to prepare for GE 2016.Media interviews, forums, op-eds, the works to soften the ground. No one should take this particular "intellectual' too seriously. He seems to trying too hard to prove himself useful. Years ago when he took over from Tommy Koh at the UN he tried to ape his master in deriding the Africans in his inaugural speech and was roundly condemned. He was recalled soon thereafter and replaced. With his tails behind his legs he plugged away as the Deputy Secretary at the MFA. Don't be surprised that this "intellectual" who doubted if Asians can think, will call for Singaporeans to pull rickshaws. Why not? It brings back the glamour of the Orient, will help reduce unemployment, and amuse the rich foreigners in our midst.

I don't like this guy, but I do have to agree with him in this case.

The average Singaporean has to "moderate" his dreams to fall within the parameters of the Confucian-values Singapore's benign dictatorship's social and national engineering plans.

The average Singaporean is INCAPABLE of living his own life as a self-reliant, personally responsible INDIVIDUAL and thus a system based on universal Confucian collectivist values is THE BEST system. Like sheep, people who have no clue about their own self-actualisation need to be herded (led) by more knowledgeable elites who can guide and plot the course of the Society of Sheeple to strict objectives, such that the nation prevails and the cult of Confucian-based Sheeplism is preserved for generations to come.

George Orwell wrote 1984 which described a dystopian universe where people were ruled by corrupt absolute powers. Unfortunately Orwell didn't live long enough to see how successful totalitarian rule could be -- as in the case of Singapore.

Singapore's Sheeple should not dream "big things" anymore -- there is no need. Since they've relinquished all personal responsibility to the government, it would behoove them to also give up their dreams and allow the government to do the dreaming and planning for them.

The Sheeple should not act as individuals to achieve more autonomy. They should just lay back and slowly allow themselves to morph into automatons -- by simply doing nothing and allow the government the right and the space to construct a Utopia.

Kishore can say what he like lah.

But smart Sinkies know that in Sinkieland, if they want car or a good life, they must have money. And lots of it.

So smart Sinkies concentrate on making lots of money. And they did.

And how do smart Sinkies make money?

By getting a high pay job lah, like what Kishore did.

Or do business lah, in particlular those GLC related businesses lah.

And they will never do one thing, and which is to join opposition.

Join opposition can make money or not, you tell me lah.

These policy makers are playing with fire. People can vote with 2 legs. After a while, Singaporeans will realize Australia is much more attractive for middle class. Then they migrate.

Also Singapore can attract talent because we offer much better life than China. Today, China government is giving better and better life to people, while PAP is taking away all goodies.

Not only fewer and fewer PRC are coming, but many are leaving for PRC.

When good people are gone, the nation will suffer.

If PAP can make 43% Sinkies and 17% foreigners rich, happy and satisfied, very good already.

Why? Because PAP can just make the 17% foreigners into citizens and PAP is most likely assured of 60% votes and 93% seats.

Of course, this is on condition that WP is still not ready to be govt lah.

And which should be lah, since many smart Sinkies would rather make money or blog (for kopi money?) than to join opposition.

You also not a smart sinkie lah. Instead of going to make more money you come here and waste time. Or you oredy made so much money huh?

RB, kopi kau for you. Nice Sunday morning.

"Today, China government is giving better and better life to people,..."
Veritas September 15, 2013 10:22 am

Come on lah, Veritas, you know how big China or the world is or not?

Surely no matter what China govt do, not every China people can have better life than Sinkies what, tio bo?

So Sinkieland can still attract the "lesser quality" types of China people lah. Or for that matter, any other countries type lah.

And who knows, maybe it has already been happening all this while.

I think Singapore and Singaporeans WILL FARE MUCH BETTER WITHOUT THE TALENTED ELITES RULING AND LORDING OVER US.
If only we have less of te Nincompoops ib the Cabinet, Singaporeans would not have to slog and slave for survivals.
May the Elites migrate to other places to enjoy their living of opulence and plenty. Singaporeans do not need their leaderships.

Just walked to Rail Mall for my lunch and passed by a PRC yakking away over his HP in a language that identified him to be a FT PRC. He was standing next to a new 7 series BMW - a car that is beyond my dream. Looking at him filled me with envy. This FT has come in and live the life I only dream about. He has stolen my Singapore dream. Or Our heartless Govt has given my dream to him and leave me in a lurch.

Like the anon above said, the new Singaporean dream is to pull rickshaw.

If down grading is good, why not the ministers and top gov down grade? why not they just take bicycle/mrt to work?

Every time this idiot opened his stinky mouth, lies poured out. If island is so good, no need to sell so hard. He is just another bad salesman. Cannot even sound convincing.

Very soon, the island will be flooded and taken over by pinoys and ahnehs. The newly minted citizens from third world will form the gov and ministers. Sinkies will be ruled by third world citizens.

Serving NS to protect the assets of foreigners and those in forbes rich list. How naive the 60% sinkies are?

It costs only $1k psm to build a house in OZ (a country with high min wage), how much has the hdb over charge sinkies for the costs of construction?

You can own one 7series bmw once you are prepare to jump ship aka migrate. Your dream is possible but definitely not in this small island.

With prices inflating and wages deflating, obviously it is a no brainer that downgrade is the way to go. Not only in private to public tpt but from public housing to universal housing! What do I mean? When 4 rm public housing costs $700,000+ in some areas, surely some pple end up downgrading to 3-rm hdb. Fast forward a couple of years and many may find another new norm replaces the old. 3 rm hdb prices also price out the new entrants. So another round of downgrading. Another downgrade and pple find themselves back to the 50s and 60s 1 rm flat basic housing. But its this the end? Going by empirical examples historically and over space, as most Sgreans are no taller and wider than 2m by 2 m, future 2 m by 3m mesh wire dwellings could be the new norm and aspirations of future new entrants given the exponentially growing divergent trend in asset prices and wage growth. All the aspirations one need is to stay alive in a 2 by 3 m mesh wire dwellings which are probably about 1.5 times the size of coffins during night time and get up and out during day to eke out enough to eat and pay the dwelling cost of coffin-like housing. Sounds gd for our ultimate First World Swiss std of living promised by one ex-PM?

Mati lah will talk like any Cabinet Member. He will say cannot afford a car, dont drive; cannot afford a house, sleep anywhere and use public toilet. Cannot find a job after getting a degree? Mati lah will say be a banquet attendant or worse come to worst be a toilet cleaner.
What does he and Cabinet Members do to collect their millions? Spout some sweet sayings and sometimes, some undecipherable nonsences. Or in short, shits from their mouths.

The standard of living of citizens is improving from 2013 to 1970. Not bad. If it goes on like that, soon they will be back to the 1950s. And all will be so honoured to be owners of a half a million or more than a million dollar housing debt.

Hi SingaAnt, welcome to the blog. Sinkies are made to work ever harder and harder, to upgrade their skills and qualifications by paying exorbitant fees only to be told to downgrade, to expect less, while the govt claimed it is all for economic growth which is good for the people.
