Adoption of autonomous vehicles is one race Singapore is not keen on winning
Cities such as Guangzhou and San Francisco already have robotaxis and autonomous buses for public use, but Singapore is treading carefully. This deliberate pace is not hesitation but to ensure safety, among other reasons. CNAThe above headline in CNA seems out of sync with Singapore's number one in everything mindset. Singapore is taking it slowly, deliberately, and not keen on winning, not wanting to be the first in SE Asia or the world to have autonomous driving cars on the road.
Actually, Singapore has been testing this technology for more than a decade and still testing. On the other hand, autonomous driving taxis have been on the roads for more than a decade in many cities in China. The US also have them on the road in more progressive and modern cities. In other words, the technology is maturing. And for Singapore to say that it wants to be the first to get it right the first time is a no brainer. China already got it right more than a decade ago. Singapore is too late, behind time.
What is holding Singapore back from wanting to be in the race for smart cities? Is it because the infrastructure is not there, no good 5G network to keep the technology safe on the road? Half baked western 5G network is not good enough for autonomous self driving cars. Period.
What else is holding back? Crowded cities? The cities in China and cities like Austin, Los Angeles, Phoenix and San Francisco are not crowded? Tokyo is not crowded? Or these cities are not safety conscious, did not care about the safety of their people? What are the among other reasons?
What do you think?

Off topic. I do not see many BYD EVs on the street, although BYD is reported to be the top seller in first quarter of 2025. I have seen many BYD buses and some taxis, but very few privately owned cars. Toyota is still seen most dominant on the roads. Am I missing something?
One question I have to ask is if Chinese EVs are so cheap, does that affect the COE's that the Government is now reaping in?
Driverless taxis need vehicles with more than just four wheels and a body. It is a new type of high-tech vehicle altogether that is now a game changer. We are nowhere near that with all the old tech vehicles and short of infrastructure.
This will make the thousands of transport drivers jobless overnight! Who will place these out of jobs public & private transport drivers? Even grab delivery workers will be hit. Can Aunty Lucy find them jobs ? This will scare the shit out of the G?
Would be nice to have flying cars too.
You will need fast network link for such car, too bad we only have sub-standard 5G network. Once Malaysia have all it Huawei 5G ready, lot of their transportation could be driverless.
