Can the citizens penalise the govt?

The people are penalized for all kinds of transgression that are not crimes in any way. Late payment for bills kenna fined plus GST lagi. Earn too much cannot get subsidies, and cannot buy public flats. Kenna mean tested for medical subsidies just to name a few.

Can or should the people fine the govt for failed policies or for not providing the basic necessities? We pay really good money for a first class govt and it is rightly that we expect and demand that they don’t foul up in things that can be planned ahead. And that is what this govt has been crowing about all these years. They are on top of all the problems, they can plan ahead, especially for the good of Sinkies using the Sinkies’ money in the CPF.

Can the people expect the govt to plan ahead for public housing, hospitals and hospital beds, school places for children from primary schools to universities, public transportation and what else? These are things that are within the govt’s control. And if the govt fails miserably in these areas, should it be penalized? The housing fiasco is one. The inadequacy of public transport, the lack of primary school places, the shortage of hospital beds. Is the govt going to say, can’t be helped?

What do you think? Or should the people provide the govt with answers to solve these problems? Or can these questions be asked in Parliament without being seen as insinuating any wrong doings?

Maybe the govt is flawless and beyond reproach.

You don't fine the government. If you are not happy with their performance you vote them out. However 60% don't know they have been screwed, or are masochists who enjoy being screwed, or have their heads screwed on the wrong way.

Surely can,
just vote Alternative Party.
Will the citizens do it?

Penalizing the Govt. can.
It's called voting for the Opposition.

But it is not effective because Singaporeans have very high tolerance for pain, suffering and bullshit.

Relying on votes and opposition to penalize or hold the government accountable is obviously not working very well(too many loopholes). In fact, the government, basically a group of men and women, is susceptible to corruption like any other corporate entity. Do you "vote or rely on opposition" to hold corporate entity accountable?

If not, why so stupid?

Set up an independent board of inquiry and screwtinize the practices of highfalutin people but you have to change the law first. Can you without someone rising from the dead?

You can't change the law in Singapore.
Without a majority of Opposition MPs in parliament.

You also can't set up an independent board of inquiry;
Without a majority of Opposition MPs in parliament.

Precisely because it comes back to the law and we all know that area is ahem...beyond reproach.

Have you followed a system, like you follow a religion, blindly?

Anonymous said...

If your system works, why after 50 years you still can't get answers?

Chua Chin Leng aka redbean said...

The system worked for about 30 years. The last 10 to 15 years it started to go wrong but riding on the momentum of the past and still looking good. This cannot last long as the parts are breaking apart. And the wrongs are starting to show.

I am not sure about that Mr Chua. All I see is success breeds extreme success and all under a powerful single party.

The foundation is very important. The initial years were devoted to setting up "the props". Anyone question whether it was sound? Or you assume it was "good years"?

Furthermore, it is imported "religion". Think about it.

The oppositions are basically clueless or in Singlish...bodoh. They are fighting on old soil or of dirt. If they are smart...they won't behave like pigs rolling on mud.

How can you penalise them when their failure is not properly explaining their policies enough because they did not know that you are so daft as to not undderstand?

Anonymous said...

No change but short changed

No human rights, no true justice however.....

They are clean on the outside of the cup and the platter; but the inward part is full of ravening and wickedness.

These lawyers have taken away the key of knowledge. They entered not in themselves, and them that were entering in ....they hindered.

(2) A person who professes certain ideals, but fails to live up to them.

(3) A person who holds other people to higher standards than he holds himself.

lawyers....ye lade men with burdens grievous to be borne, and ye yourselves touch not the burdens with one of your fingers.

this is very true....it's your problem...we have legal providence for you to resolve your grievances....but it is YOUR problem...not that we have created the problem....

yeah right...have you seriously look at the "legal providence"?

they are more of a deterrence than a resolution...it never really solve anything but shift the burden or blame on the citizen...and your average citizen gets bullied into...silence or consequently backed away leaving hypocrites looking like.....well...holy.

Good job done powers...hallelujah...all worshipped with their eyes closed....so much joy...fruits that we are on the right path...lol

Tthere is no real help for the losers in society. They just fade into a black hole. Nobody knows. Nobody really cares. Those who benefited from the system are too busy basking in their successes and smelling their own fart.

Oh yes, they do charity like giving away their branded bag for a good cause.

LKY said on his visit to Suharto in hospital that Indonesians are not being grateful to Suharto. He said that as long as there is progress and development corruption and cronyism do not matter.

"Yes, there was corruption. Yes, he gave favours to his family and his friends. But there was real growth and real progress. I think the people of Indonesia are lucky. They had a general in charge, had a team of competent administrators — including a very good team of economists to build up the country."
