Pesta Sukan 2019 - Glamour at the track

Today is the last day of the Pesta Sukan Athletics event with the 4x400m relays for all age groups plus an inter generation race for children racing together with the young and the seniors in a team. There was also the business houses being represented and I noticed a few groups like SIA Marina Bay Sands, Grab, SIM and also the polytechnics. It was a colourful day with a lot of beautiful people and hunky men. Here are some of the pics that I took of these lovely people. Will put up a separate post on action shots later.

2023 World Indoor Masters Track and Field Championships coming to Singapore?

Singapore Masters Athletics(SMA) is making a bid for Singapore to host the next World Masters Championship in 2023, the tenth in the series. This is a biennial sports event for masters athletes around the world to compete at the highest level. This year, 2019, the championships was held in Torun, Poland, in March. The 9th Championship would be held in Edmonton, Canada in 2021.

This is a major international event that SMA is bidding to host in 2023. The main characteristics of this Championships is that it would be held indoor, in indoor stadium specifically built and designed for it with a 200m wooden running track instead of the normal 400m synthetic track.

Presumably this would be held in our Kallang Indoor Stadium, the stadium where most of the international sports and live performances were held. The National Stadium would be too big for such an event, I supposed, though not completely ruling this out. Whichever, there would be some renovations needed to be done to get the stadium ready for this prestigious event that every masters athletes would love to compete in our home ground. I think it would cost about $20m to install the running tracks for this event. $20m is really peanuts compared to the amount spent on children's Olympic or the hundreds of millions on the F1 event.

This event is akin to a senior Olympic level of athletic competition and Singapore would be proud to be given a chance to host this event here. An indoor stadium would make running and competing in our hellish equatorial heat a thing of the past and the performance and results of the athletes would likely to be the best ever. An indoor stadium, air conditioned, would be heaven on earth for the athletes.

We are looking forward to welcome this event in 2023 and with four years of preparation to make this another statement for Singapore as a great destination in a tropical paradise. With our great location, reputation and great management, our bid should receive favourable consideration by the World Masters Athletics(WMA) body.
