What is a rogue President?

Lye Khuen Way:

It’s probably time to do away with this wayang Elected President thing. Why? From President Ong onwards, we never had any Presidents, Elected or Appointed who dare to ask probing questions of the Government of the day.

With impending changes that will make further mockery of this institution of an Elected President, let’s not fool ourselves that it’s for Singapore good.

Then what? No symbolic Head of State? What State is my retort! Aren’t we a place that belongs to Everyone? I didn’t say it. One PM did and he is still the new PM!

The above is a comment by a blogger in TRE. Lye is very cynical and suspicious about the purpose of this ‘wayang Elected President thing’. What was Lye Khuen Way saying in this sentence, ‘From President Ong onwards, we never had any Presidents, Elected or Appointed who dare to ask probing questions of the Government of the day.’? These Presidents cannot be rogues right? Everyone is an honourable man, high net worth, with plenty of money, ‘chiat buay leow’, how can they be rogues?  Not asking probing questions is not a condition to be  a rogue. And when everything is fine, country so well run, all the reserves so well taken care of, what is there to ask? And when the govt is making all the right policies and supported by the people, elected by the people, lagi no reason and no question to ask. Like that how to blame them?

There is no point asking simple questions or silly questions just to be put on record that one actually spoke up right?  The president is not like MPs, need to speak up in parliament or to ask questions to be seen to be working.  There is no need to waste people’s time asking questions that meant nothing or take too long to answer.  As the most dignified person in office, the President cannot anyhow open mouth to ask question when there is no question to be asked. To be presidents, all must be very smart and know when to ask questions when they know something is wrong.

The impending changes must be good, how can it be a mockery? Have faith in the popularly elected govt to do the right thing for the good of the country. Cannot anyhow cast doubts and demand an explanation like asking opposition politicians to explain everything. An elected govt is not the same as opposition parties.  Everything tip top, everyone honourable and integrity cannot be doubted. That is why the people trusted them and elected them to be the rulers of the country.
Anyone knows what is a rogue president?

Anyone knows what is a rogue president?
RB

The answer is the party that can win elections to become govt will decide what is a rogue president, or whether or not to even have any president.

Once they decide, everybody will know what is, or rather what is not, a rogue president, or whether there will even be a president.

Cambridge dictionary definition of rogue:

"behaving in ways that are not expected or not normal, often in a way that causes damage: a rogue"

http://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/rogue

So the next question:
Who decides what is "not normal"?

PAP or WP?
Singaporean voters or Singapore parliament?
Nominated Members of parliament or NCMP?
appointed grassroots leaders or elected Members of Parliament?

Who watches the watchmen?
Who guards the guardians?

Definition of Oligarchy from the Encyclopaedia Brittanica

Oligarchy, government by the few, especially despotic power exercised by a small and privileged group for corrupt or selfish purposes.

Aristotle used the term oligarchia to designate the rule of the few when it was exercised not by the best but by bad men unjustly.

In this sense, oligarchy is a debased form of aristocracy, which denotes government by the few in which power is vested in the best individuals.

Most classic oligarchies have resulted when governing elites were recruited exclusively from a ruling caste — a hereditary social grouping that is set apart from the rest of society by religion, kinship, economic ... (100 of 623 words)

All prospective Presidential candidates must meet the following criteria (see below) from the Elections Department of Singapore.

Question:
The criteria is very stringent.
Who decided on the criteria?

How many Singaporeans would qualify?
Do you think the list of qualifying individuals would exceed even 50 Singaporeans?

Do you think USA's President Obama (before he became the American President) would qualify if he were Singaporean?
Do you think Indonesia's President Jokowi would qualify if he were Singaporean?

QUALIFICATIONS FOR CANDIDATES

A person is qualified to be a candidate for election as President if he:

is a citizen of Singapore;

is 45 years old and above on Nomination Day;

is registered as an elector in the current registers of electors;

is resident in Singapore on Nomination Day and has been so for a total period not less than 10 years;

is not subject to any of the disqualifications specified in Article 45 of the Constitution of the Republic of Singapore;

is not a member of any political party on the date of his nomination for election; and

has held office for a period of not less than 3 years in position of seniority and responsibility in the public or private sector as described below:

as Minister, Chief Justice, Speaker, Attorney-General, Chairman of the Public Service Commission, Auditor-General, Accountant-General or Permanent Secretary;

Yesterday, Dr Mahathir asked if the administration was part of a democracy when people who criticised it landed in trouble.

“The existing law is not being implemented properly. New laws are then formulated for another purpose and people get arrested and tried,” he said. “I know that during my time we had the ISA (Internal Security Act), but I did not use it to harass people who criticised me. Only when they did something to the country.

“If you criticise the government now, you are going to be detained, questioned and put on trial. If you can’t criticise, then where is the democracy?

“The law is applied differently depending on who you are. So, somebody has to say something. I have to say it because I want the country to have a good reputation. People ask me what has happened to your country? It’s shameful. All because of one man’s leadership.” THE MALAYSIAN INSIDER

How Is a New Pope Chosen? - The Pope chooses the Cardinals who elects the Pope

Cardinals are bishops and Vatican officials from all over the world, personally chosen by the pope, recognizeable by their distinctive red vestments.

After leaving politics in 2011, he missed the sense of satisfaction that he found in influencing the course of development in Singapore and being responsible for the lives of many people, he said.

"Public life gives you a big stage to act upon, which you don't get in the private sector," he said.

But it also allowed him to "switch off", as political life meant having to be responsive to the needs of constituents all the time.

"Politics is incessant and the pressure is continuous. Politics being a service industry, the customer is always right," he said.

Mr Yeo also recounted how Pope Francis sat in on one of the Vatican Council meetings and freely admitted he was dependent on the group to give him sound financial advice.

He was also struck by the pontiff's humility and said the Pope's moral values "are well anchored". He added that the inclusion of lay people in the Vatican Council was a first, and was an experiment in church governance that had the potential to make a great impact globally

The majority of people who have nothing better to do than to go down to Hong Lim to hold hands and sing "We Shall Overcome" do not understand realpolitik.

All they can do it complain and seek to "change the world" because the world or their cuntry does not accord with their TEXTBOOK on political ideology and theory. And so they go to places like HLP and complain about "human rights" or some other made-up-shit. Note: "human rights" is made up shit. It never existed until some folks "created" it.

Consider the Middle East dictatorships, and all of them were corrupt and ruthless. However, there was relative peace (compared to now) when Assad, Ghadafi, Saddam Hussein and others running the show.

They had the required ruthlessness to keep the peace by keeping warring factions at bay (for the most part). Sunni vs Shia...uneasy peace, but peace nonetheless. Occasional there'd be a mass killing by poison gas or bio warfare. Islam vs the state: the dictators prevented too much religion from taking over all the ruling power.

Once these dictators were removed (Assad barely holding on), the religionists, like ISIS took over and ascended to power. Now we have a right royal mess...civil wars and ISIS, Suunis and Shias killing each other physically as well as economically (oil price dropping, thus oil revenues also falling)...god knows what else.

In Asia, the "strongmen" like Suharto, Marcos, Lee KY, Dr M, Park Chung-hee, Thaksin, Deng Xiaoping...all A-Number One Motherfuckers used whatever was necessary to keep the peace and ensure that market-capitalism could work and thus create the much needed wealth in the poorest region of the world.

Firstly, I'm definitely not "wise" ;-) secondly, I don't vote, so I didn't "choose". Personally I think "democracy" is overrated. I prefer maximum possible FREEDOM. Under democracy, you always will be at mercy of the majority, or in a representative democracy like Singapore, you are at the mercy of over-paid fuckers in parliament who as smart as they are, and as good for the cuntry as they are, will NEVER HAVE A SAY in in my life...I will do as I please :-)

The benign dictatorship suits Singapore, because CULTURALLY that's how the people think and feel COLLECTIVELY. The People WANT to have fellow Singaporeans from their own community to govern them with strong laws and leadership.

If you have little will or discipline, then in order to become "your best self", the smartest thing to do is to HIRE A COACH who will not give you chance, and tekan you until you become your best...I'm using a gym-training analogy here.

Similarly for the nation: if you don't have the will, nor the skills, nor the discipline to make your cuntry AWESOME, you vote in fellow citizens who are capable of whipping the cuntry and its people into shape. Before and after

PAP Government is paying a ceremonial president more than a executive president in the USA. Even a secretary of state or foreign minister in US has more power, responsibility and paid even lesser then the US president. The specific duties of the Secretary of State include:
[7]
wiki Organizes and supervises the entire United States Department of State and the United States Foreign Service.
Advises the President on matters relating to U.S. foreign policy, including the appointment of diplomatic representatives to other nations, and on the acceptance or dismissal of representatives from other nations.
Participates in high-level negotiations with other countries, either bilaterally or as part of an international conference or organization, or appoints representatives to do so. This includes the negotiation of international treaties and other agreements.
Responsible for overall direction, coordination, and supervision of interdepartmental activities of the U.S. Government overseas.
Providing information and services to U.S. citizens living or traveling abroad, including providing credentials in the form of passports and visas.
Ensures the protection of the U.S. Government to American citizens, property, and interests in foreign countries;
Supervises the United States immigration policy abroad.
Communicates issues relating the United States foreign policy to Congress and to U.S. citizens.

The original duties of the Secretary of State include some domestic duties, such as:[8]
Receipt, publication, distribution, and preservation of the laws of the United States
Preparation, sealing, and recording of the commissions of Presidential appointees
Preparation and authentication of copies of records and authentication of copies under the Department's seal
Custody of the Great Seal of the United States
Custody of the records of the former Secretary of the Continental Congress, except for those of the Treasury and War Departments

As the head of the United States Foreign Service, the Secretary of State is responsible for management of the diplomatic service of the United States. The foreign service employs about 12,000 people domestically and internationally, and supports 265 United States diplomatic missions around the world, including ambassadors to various nations. wiki

>> I for one hope to see something different.. more presidents in one term working together. <<

When America was first founded, the popularly elected president had virtually no political power. His (in those days, only males were allowed to vote) role was essentially ceremonial.

In order to prevent the president from going rogue, the vice president was the "loser" of the presidential election...i.e. the guy who came second, which means he's from the OPPOSING PARTY. Since neither man trusted the other, this was a great self-checking mechanism.

Over time, there was an EXPANSION of presidential powers. (Google that shit). Today the US president doesn't need the approval of congress or the senate...he can act unilaterally and issue "executive orders"---which although can be challenged in court (and they have) normally just goes through. IF you look at the history of the US presidency, you'll see how the NUMBER of executive orders issued by successive presidents has INCREASED.

OK, Singapore is not the USA; I use the example above to support my position that having a president chosen by popular vote is a very very BAD IDEA.

What PM Lee is proposing to allow parliament to choose the president is a far better and safer strategy not only good for the nation, but definitely for the people themselves.

Why do you think in China the president is chosen by their parliamentary body: the legislature known as the NPC or National People's Congress (全国人民代表大会)? Could it be because they know the risks of a directly elected presidency?

Directly elected populist presidents get up to all sorts of bad stuff...Suharto, Marcos....Google that shit on popularly elected presidents with full power...no good news there (unless you're a corrupt bugger in cahoots with the dictators...then you can make plenty money!)

Once a rogue president is in, the only way out is to kill the bugger (assassination) or mount a successful coup. (Unsuccessful coups will result in EXECUTING the perpetrators for sedition and treason).

I don't agree with the PAP on many issues. However, this one they have ABSOLUTELY RIGHT.

Let parliament choose the president. The alternative will lead to eventual tyranny.

Of course they do. They can lie, cheat, steal, declare war and legally murder people.

But it is more difficult because of:

1. The constitution

2. The separation of powers--i.e. if you have a rogue parliament, the INDEPENDENT JUDICIARY can shut them down and even prosecute rogue members, by just doing their fundamental job: upholding the constitution.

3. The opposition parties in parliament

4. Pluralistic nature of parliament: i.e. there is more than ONE person in the decision making processes. Rest assured not everyone will agree, even members of the same ruling party. Contrast that with a popularly elected president who has EXECUTIVE POWERS and can unilaterally do anything he/ she likes to anyone for any reason.

5. The president himself: e.g.: the well known case of President OTC who was appointed by the parliament. He came out and held the govt.'s feet to the fire regarding the state of the national reserves.

The idea of having a non-publicly chosen head of state is a sound idea, and has long-term protections for the cuntry and its people.

However the PAP have only themselves to blame for the cynicism against this idea.

Moral of story:

Yew better not be an asshole. People remember. Later on when yew need their support for a good idea, they will not support yew.

OTC is just a spark with no flame. Like the rest, feather weight compared to you know who.

If OTC cannot do anything, you think anyone can become a rogue president?
Don't bluff bluff lah.

Actually it's the Singapore electorate who is the real pussy. The people expect ONE MAN to do all the heavy lifting?

How many Singaporeans came out to support OTC when he called the govt. to account?

Not many. Not nearly enough to make a difference.

The Pussy People Get The Authoritarian Govt They Deserve! 😂😝

Better start looking for your next...dictator. Bow and lick his toes for more good years.

@ 1048:

That's what I've been saying all along. Singaporeans are such that they perform THE BEST when they have a dictator kicking their arses.

Damn straight, if you want many more "good years", better get a proper dictator in ASAP.

Question is...is there a future for...dictatorship?

Ⓜatilah $ingapura⚠️ said...

@ 1059:

IMO, yes. Because a benevolent dictator accords with THE CULTURE of Singaporeans---i.e. they WANT authority, so they can concentrate on money, shopping and eating...and every manner of "materialism" imaginable. (Don't laugh, it's true)

What is a rogue president ?

Silly question.

A rogue president is any president
appointed by any rogue regime.

Got it ?

Not laughing. It is quite true. Have you found or will you find such an aggressive and merciful leader post LKY?

How does merciful fits
inti ruthlessness.
Are they the same?
Or was a horrible man
double faced or of
splitted personalities?

Sure got. Go to any "successful" hedge fund. You'll find many suitable candidates there ;-)

ruthless towards anyone who challenges the wisdom of the elitist class and merciful enough to dish out crumbs.

All these proposed changes just because Tan Jee Say qualified to be a candidate in the last Presidential Election.
