Can good intention justify murder?

Many well intended and well meaning people welcome the compulsory annuity proposal as a good scheme. I also think so. But what is wrong or why so many people are against it? I will spare the effort on the goodness of the scheme as these are apparent and already made known. The gist of the scheme is that it is compulsory and taking people's money from their pockets against their will. This is first degree violation of a person's right to his property. Some may call it in stronger terms. The next objection is that not many people will need it. Not many. So why compel all the people when it is so good and no takers? It is like telling people heaven is a good place. And to ensure that everyone will go to heaven, all the people must donate a sum of their wealth for this cause. It is compulsory. The people cannot decide whether they want to go to heaven or somewhere else. Can people get it? It is compulsion. It is the people's money. If it comes from the pocket of the do gooders, well, everyone will be for it. Just because someone dreams of doing something good, he has the blank cheque to force everyone to go along with him? Can we accept that? I want to build a paradise. Can I demand everyone to put aside 10% of their income as prerequisite for entry to my paradise? Life insurance is a very good thing. Can it be made compulsory?

Ya, if you feel so storngly about this, go out and do something about it. Otherwise, you are just empty vessels making noise.

After a long time and countless unhappy rantings, you seems to have finally hit the nail with your argument that the problem is really a question of principle.

I like that:

"Life insurance is a very good thing. Can it be made compulsory?"

The answer- can, why not?
(medisave) insurance is all along compulsory what. life/annuity insurance could be made compulsory "for your own good".

I dunno abt the other anons here. but i'm not digging u, beano.
just wanna find some practical ways for this latest stuff hanging over our heads! maybe as much as u do!

Even if you can find an alternative, more practical way, what makes you think the government will even consider it at all ? So why bother ? There're only two ways to deal with this. If you have the means, emigrate. Otherwise, just accept your fate.

you mean close the blog and forum?

redbean said...

no need to close forum. no need to accept the two options. just talk about it...here.

with the pervasiveness of the internet, a irrelevant or insensible thing will be talked about and everyone will come to know about it. cannot hide anymore.

good solutions and policies will be appreciated. nonsense will be mocked.

redbean shouldnt accept his fate or get lost from here just becos he has strong views abt things.

I think he could join a party to argue and articulate his views on a better platform, instead of talking to himself more often than not.

Name me one time a good solution and policy from the people has been appreciated by the government. You are still lving in your little, delusional, detached from reality existence, Red bean.

redbean said...

oh yes, almost forgotten about the good brothers. this month my hits should be at least 1 mil plus 90k or more.

as for anonymous 2:23,

obviously you are a foreigner or one of those ungrateful singaporeans who did not know what is good or bad that the govt had done. without hesitatitng i could rattle off 10 or 20 items easily that the govt had done right.

tsk tsk.

you are right.

as i have posted above, the annuity is not enough. it is a fool's dream of financial independence. one will be hit by all kinds of age old sickness. one medical bill is enough to kill off anyone.

enjoy your golden eighties and nineties.
