The USA tried to install a pro-USA Government before this and attempted to do away with the Thai Monarchy, a stance that most of the Thai people and military are against. Taking away the Thai Monarchy will be the first step to weaken the Thai Government, after which weakening the power of the military will follow. Having election offers a weak spot in any country's national security, easily tempered with using money.
The Thai Military Government is well aware that foreign NGOs are working the ground in tandem with the National Endowment for Democracy (NED), an entity backed by the USA Government. The NED's job is to destabilize Governments that do not follow the dictates of the USA. It was involved in Hong Kong unrest working together with the CIA, providing the funding to those protestors.
The Thai Government tried to pass a law requiring all NGOs to disclose their source of funding, which resulted in those NGOs up in arms against the ruling. As we know, human rights group are also against such laws that will curb their nefarious activities trying to destabilize legally elected governments.
Now, the modus operandi of the NED seems to be using one country against another to fulfil its objective of destabilizing both, killing two birds with one stone.

Each time the USA created unrest in Thailand, Red Shirts or Yellow Shirts, the Thai Monarchy eventually steps in to calm the situation, while the Thai Military will enact emergency rule to prevent a revolution that favors the USA. What does the USA need to do to destabilize Thailand? Create wars among neighbors.
Taking out the Thai Monarchy and preventing the strong Thai Military regime from restoring calm is the only way, and the irony is that the Thai Military and segments of the Thai population knows that keeping the Monarchy is essential for peace in Thailand. There have been calls for removing the influence of the Thai Monarch or curb its power under recent Government changes that failed.
Thailand must move ahead with its new law requiring NGOs to disclose their funding, which will tell the Government which foreign country is trying to destabilize Thailand. The answer, a no-brainer, will ultimately point to the National Endowment for Democracy (NED) together with the CIA funding those NGOs working the ground.
That is clearly foreign intervention into the internal affairs of a sovereign country. Singapore already outlawed any foreign funding for political parties, with even foreign or domestic companies' involvement in funding of political parties in election campaigns not allowed. Which is why funding disclosure of election campaigns had to be closely monitored.
This time the Americans never plant some obvious links to insinuate China is behind it.
Singapore only outlaw those foreign fund that they don't like and go to the opposition party. If it is from the US, and given to Ah Long, it will be welcome with a free holiday in SInagpore (remember Kim/Trump bromance here.)
