Commentary: India-EU’s ‘mother of all deals’ is much more than just a trade pact
The sprawling trade deal sends a positive message in support of rules-based global trade at a time when that appears to be increasingly under strain, says Amitendu Palit from the National University of Singapore.
SINGAPORE: After nearly two decades of stop-start negotiations, India and the European Union (EU) have sealed a free trade agreement (FTA), lavishly described by both sides as the “mother of all deals”.
Formally announced at the India-EU Summit in New Delhi on Tuesday (Jan 27), the trade pact has far-reaching significance – not only for its economic potential as one of the world’s largest common markets, but also the positive message it sends in support of rules-based global trade at a time when that appears to be increasingly under strain.

This trade pact is about the most important agreement to be signed in 2026. It would dwarf the RCEP and all existing trade pacts. Europe would be able to export all its high tech products eg automobiles, 5G network, machinery and AI to India. Oops. Europe has no credible AI. It would be India exporting its world class AIs and AI experts to Europe, train system management experts, Call Centres, top Indian CEOs and bankers, and academics, including all the high tech chips, EVs, solar panels, EV batteries and medicine to Europe.
EU and India will see a dramatic growth in their two way trades. India's GDP could see an exponential rise with its exports to Europe. If Europe were to transfer its advanced technologies to India, India will soon become a technology powerhouse, build its own 5th and 6th Gen warplanes, nuclear propelled aircraft carriers. Tata will be the biggest beneficiary, can transformed from building minicars and motorcycles to build top end Mercedes Benz, BMW, VW automobiles to sell to the world. Oops, I forgot to mention high speed trains, mobile phones and space stations.
India's dream of over taking China to become the number two economic superpower is coming. And with all the industrial expansion, India will no longer need to export its talented manpower. But the problem of the USA is that such curtailment forces businesses like retailers finding it impossible to do business going forward without relying on cheap imports.

During the 2024 election, some people were commenting on which candidate China would support to win the election - Trump or Harris. I find it hard to believe that there are still leaders of countries in the world that profess to trust the USA and its leaders. Those who joined Trump's 'Board of Peace in Gaza' are perfect examples.
Have they forgotten the lies that the USA and UK fabricated to invade Iraq? Those lies were conclusively proven to be just lies to remove Saddam Hussein and steal the oil. Where were the evidence of Weapons of Mass Destruction that was the pivotal argument to attack Iraq? It was an illegal war, that if carried out by another country like China, Russia, North Korea, Iran or Myanmar, will find its leaders facing 'war crimes' as simple as that. Yet the whole bunch, George W. Bush, Tony Blair, Donald Rumsfeld, Madaleine Albright and Colin Powell, among many others just got off without even a slap on the wrist. What is the purpose of the UN, ICC, ICJ and so-called Human Rights Watchdogs? These are watchdogs that choose when to wake up and when to sleep or pretend to sleep. They see nothing, hear nothing and say nothing where it suits them.
If the USA leaders can lie to its citizens about, for example, tariffs, what else would the USA not lie about against the rest of the world? For all we know, skeptics have tried to pry away the official lies about the assassination of John F. Kennedy, 911 and the moon landing to no avail. The USA's 'exceptionalism' has allowed it to get away with anything.
How prolific a liar the Trump Administration has now opened up on display in Minnesota, with the shooting of another protestor, Alex Pretti, by Trump's goons. The Government's version of the incident has completely been contradicted and torn apart by video evidence captured at the scene. Doctors who examined the body of Alex found it riddled with bullet holes. This was murder clear and simple. And yet the Trump administration, from top to bottom tried to justify the execution with blatant lies. The situation is still unravelling. More protest is being held, and the situation is a beautiful sight to behold to quote Nancy Pelosi.

The USA gloated that it does not need Canada. Now, the shoe is on the other foot, with the USA begging Canada for more energy supply, with darkness and cold spells in its northern states evolving. For those northern USA states, the candle has been blown out. Vegas is also suffering with visitors avoiding the USA. Why risk being accosted by Trump's ICE goons when the world is so wide and destinations begging without the risk.
As I said earlier, Canada is in the crosshairs of Trump, now threatening to impose a 100% tariff on Canada if the trade agreements between China and Canada is formalized and expanded. Why is Trump doing that, since the USA boasted that it does not need Canada? Am I missing something? And will Carney lose his marbles in the face of those threats? Left to be seen.
Trump appears adamant in making Canada as the 51st state of the USA. The Canadians have much on their hands now and only cutting off all trade with the USA will solve their problem. No exports to the USA mean that even a 1000% tariff achieves nothing.
And that makes me want to talk about Finnish PM, Petteri Orpo, leading a large delegation to visit Beijing, from 25 to 28 January, not to exchange T-shirts definitely, but to talk business and opening up alternatives. Finnish leaders had perhaps an inkling of what is in store for them with Trump mentioning Finland in the same breath as Greenland, possibly looking to add Finland as the 52nd state to the USA. I just wonder what will need to be fabricated and hyped up by the USA inventors to warrant an impending attack on Finland. Can someone help me with a guess? If Finland gets a good deal from China, I can guess myself that a 100% tariff will be on the cards. Want to bet?
SINGAPORE: A "we first" society could include foreigners, and the idea encourages individuals to focus on the community instead of themselves, said Deputy Prime Minister Gan Kim Yong on Monday (Jan 26).
Speaking during a dialogue at the Institute of Policy Studies’ (IPS) 2026 Singapore Perspectives conference, Mr Gan was responding to a question about how speeches that evoke a “we first” society may be perceived as referring to Singaporeans, unintentionally excluding foreigners, especially when leaders call on individuals to be involved in integration efforts.
The Nanyang Polytechnic student who asked the question noted that some Singaporeans may also think that if the government calls on foreigners to integrate, this might be seen as the country’s leaders being in favour of “having foreigners over citizens”.
“What can leaders do to promote genuine integration between groups while avoiding a situation where Singaporeans feel that leaders are increasingly accommodating foreigners at the expense of Singaporeans?” he asked.
The idea of a “we first” society was mentioned by Prime Minister Lawrence Wong in the 2025 National Day Rally, where he spoke about collective responsibility as a way to strengthen the bonds between Singaporeans.

The above paragraphs show two different views of the phrase 'We first' spoken by Lawrence Wong. Lawrence was very clear in saying that it is between Singaporeans. When questioned in public, Gan Kim Yong seemed defensive and pressured to say that it is also about foreigners. We also means foreigners. Why did he take such a stand? Is he afraid that the foreigners will be offended and will run away? This is our country. If Singaporeans are not first, and foreigners also first, why not abolish citizenship altogether, call this a Singapore hotel? Why not abolish NS also?
The Americans are proud of America First, with no fear of offending foreigners. No need to apologise to the foreigners. A country must always put its citizens first, right? Or foreigners have the same right and importance as citizens and we are afraid to offend them? Saying We first, Singaporeans first is only the right thing to do. There is nothing offensive about it. Nothing offensive, nothing to be embarrassed about. If Singaporeans are not the first priority in Singapore, if foreigners share the same status of importance, what is the difference between citizens and foreigners?
Singapore is our country, not the country of foreigners. We must always be first in our own land. We must have privileges as citizens over foreigners. No country in the world would treat Singaporeans the same way as their citizens. Just visit any country and ask to be treated as equals to their citizens. They will kick your ass and throw you out immediately. No country will treat foreigners as equals to their citizens.

The narrative explained the different approaches in international politics by America and China, and China is losing the plot completely when Trump let go his madness.
China is playing the long game. The strategy is to work with the countries of the Global South and help them to develop their economies, help them build their infrastructure and develop their natural resources and minerals. In the process, China hopes to win their support and friendship especially in the UN. China has many successes in the UN with votes from the Global South countries. Unfortunately these are pyrrhic victories for small issues. Whatever successes in the UNGA, the Americans could simply veto it in the UN Security Council and the issue went dead. And when it is China's turn to use the veto, the Americans would just go ahead and act on its own without the UN's approval, like unilateral sanctions and invasions of sovereign states, like Venezuela. And China cannot do anything about it.
The failure for China to act, to defend its friends and allies are seen by the whole world. China is nothing but a lame duck, cannot be depended on for safety and security. At best, China is just an ATM. And every Global South country is taking advantage of this, taking advantage of China for freebies. China is no different from Taiwan, throwing good money everywhere for fair weather friends or pests. When China is not giving enough, the pests will just go away to look for another sucker. Yes, China is just a silly sucker, throwing away billions and trillions to ungrateful countries that would turn against China any moment. When push comes to shove, they will join the American terrorists. They have no choice. They did not want to be Venezuela, Iran or even Gaza.
On the other hand, the American's way may be lawless and harsh, but it really works. Carry a hammer everywhere and smash the head of anyone that disobeyed. This is America's realpolitik, the real world of might is right. To the Americans, the UN is just a tool to serve its interests. When the UN is not doing America's bidding, kick it aside. This is why America is withdrawing membership in 60 plus UN agencies and refusing to pay its due to the UN for years. And as usual, what can the UN do? Nothing.
The UN is a silly and extravagant organisation doing sweet fark all, doing all the wrong things, the unnecessary things, fattening itself with many agencies, depts and overpaid staff, plenty of them, doing things for the sake of doing things...but not doing the real things, unable to do what is needed for the good of the world. The UN is bloated and defunct and should be closed down, or cut down to size by at least 50% in manpower and resources. In this sense, the Americans are right. When Trump takes Greenland, all the European countries will go down on their knees and beg for forgiveness from Don Trump.

Caveat, what Charlie Munger had explained are valid and will be the new order of things if Trump continues to be the POTUS, with the American military might at his disposal. Another caveat, the long game that China is playing comes to fruition before the American terrorists take down more countries, kidnap or assassinate more national leaders to frighten the shit out of all Global South countries. All the plans and strategies that China had put into place are work in progress, eg dedollarisation, alternate banking systems, alternate currencies, isolation of the American Empire, America's own debt and abuses against its allies and the world ... if only they explode before the Americans could hammer everyone, every country into place under the new Imperial Trump Empire.

Chinese investors should treat investments in India like the plague. The trust is gone for good and China has moved on from looking at and bothering with India.
The Indians are still extremely jealous of China's progress, claiming China's industrialization is all because of help from the West. If that were so, why is India so unlike China even with favorable treatment by the USA and the West in the past? In Indian minds, stealing is easier than copying, which is still the mindset and that is what is holding India back. Jealousy does not improve development. Trying to compete does and India has a lot to learn from China.
The Brits were ruling India for almost two hundred years and all the Indians copied were archaic laws and systems that still hang like an albatross on Indian necks. That shows Indians are so backward that they could not learn a single thing from the West except how to steal whole companies set up by foreigners using those archaic laws.
How about the West copying from China that help them in their progress in all fairness? Did not the West adopt the Chinese use of the compass that provided them the tool for naval exploration and colonization? Did not the West make use of the Chinese invention of paper making that was to revolutionize education and the spread of knowledge? Did not the West capitalize on the Chinese invention of paper printing, which was also instrumental in the spread of knowledge and education? And most of all, did not the West saw the gunpowder invention of the Chinese and capitalized on it to produce weapons of destruction, rockets and provided the essential inputs for space exploration?
The above are just the most important Chinese inventions and innovations that helped to improve the world. There are so many other things that the Chinese discovered or invented that the world does not even realize its humble Chinese origin. In all fairness, be objective and not just swallow the propaganda trotted out by the West to demonize China as a thief and copycat.
An article published in Asia Times on the role the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) can play in Taiwan was written by a national service pre-enlistee.

In the article, the author said: “Singapore must leverage its military ties with Taiwan in cross-strait discussions to help de-escalate China-Taiwan relations.”
He argued that Project Starlight – a defence arrangement between Singapore and Taiwan – stands as a critical element in Singapore-Taiwan defence relations, “offering a robust deterrent against sudden acts of aggression from the mainland – even if it does not match security assurances provided by the US’ Taiwan Relations Act”.
Whether the USA managed to cripple Iran or not, the reality is it will affect the oil exporters in the Middle East, and they are very concerned about the consequences. This was one of the reasons that the attempted attack on Iran had been called off at the last minute just recently. Now, 16 planeloads of secret items have been flown to Iran urgently by China, and most people knew what that means. What about other stuff going into Iran by rail. Think about it. Iran even declared a 'no fly zone' during the entry of those Chinese Y20 military cargo planes into Iranian airspace.
Iran is a big country, and Iranians will definitely fight to the last. Those old enough would have read about the Persians (now Iranians) and their military exploits and conquest, until internal strife forced the country into decline. The USA wants to support the former Shah's son to rule under its control, just like the father before, which is not going to happen. This will need a regime change, which the USA is trying to instigate by using the CIA to ferment unrest, and all the while talking about the cruelty of the regime and how many were killed. How does Iranian protestor casualties compare to what Israel killed in Gaza by resorting to hunger, energy and access to healthcare genocides? Isn't that cruelty of the highest order?
For the USA to exert control over Iran is well-nigh impossible. The USA could not even control Afghanistan after 20 long years, with the Taliban not on the same military league as Iran. Supporters of the ruling Iranian Regime will still be around and together with the Houthis, the Straits of Hormuz and the Bab Al-Mandab passage into the oil states will be closed for business. Iran and the Houthis will be setting a trap for the USA, to be entangled in the Middle East for maybe another twenty years.
Will the USA even survived the present next few years with protests erupting into a civil war on top of economic problems galore. Trump is calling the situation in Minnesota as an 'insurrection' which will probably result in more killings and eventual emergency rule, an idea that he is possibly formulating in his sick mind, just listening to his verbal diarrhea about needing a dictatorship to rule effectively. The man is now unfit to rule and should be consigned to the 'cuckoo's nest'.
A 22 min clip on the weapons China just sent to Iran, including 3,500 hypersonic DF17 missiles and 500 ICBMs. Victor Gao explained how Chinese weapons have changed the equation in this war. Iran already has a deadly arsenal of its own missiles and those sent by Russia. With the Chinese weapons, Iran is no longer a pushover, to be hit by the Americans, Israelis and Brits.
What is pertinent is China's resolve to defend Iran. This is the first time that China is openly and decisively taking a position to defend an ally. China cannot lose Iran. Losing Iran would be disastrous to China in many ways, cutting off a major source of oil that would create a crisis in China. Losing Iran would also mean the collapse of the Middle East and all of China's investments and allies in the region. This is like castrating China, an existential threat.
China is now ready to risk a war with the Americans on Iran. The American terrorists and Israeli savages would now have to think very carefully. Iran has more missiles than Israel and American have in the region and can take out every American and Israeli base many times over. Iran also has the ability to send ICBMs to American homeland. America and Israel are now playing with fire that can burn them just as badly.
The balance of power has changed. Trump's brag and lie that America has the biggest flotilla ready for war. This is nothing compare to what Iran has in the whole country. American aircraft carriers, warships and warplanes will be shot down for sure. No more free ride, to hit Iran and return to base safely. What is the world waiting for? What are BRICS and the Global South countries waiting for? This is the time for concerted actions against mad America and its mad men. Stop all trading activities with America. Boycott all American goods and services. Stop using the dollar. The mad men think they are building a wall from the rest of the world, a citadel to rule the world. The world should help the mad men to build a higher wall against mad America. Isolate them and let them play with their own madness inside their own wall.
The world must unite. The Europeans and American allies and colonies and cronies are rebelling. Join the forces of righteousness against the evil American Empire run by mad men. The time is NOW.
China just rejected the invitation to join the 'Board of Peace' saying that 'China will stay firmly committed to safeguarding the International System with the UN at its core'.
This is a brilliant but polite, diplomatic and devastating message that is a masterclass in construction, designed to counter Trump's pay-to-play outfit, according to House of EL. China will never go against its true multilateralism stand pledged at the SCO summit in September 2025, which was supported by 140 countries.
Just to show what kind of a farce the 'Board of Peace' really is, Canada already declined the invitation and yet Trump gloated that he is withdrawing his invitation to Carney. How ridiculous an interpretation to suggest that he is withdrawing the invitation when the reality is that Carney already declined that invitation. It is not difficult to imagine that only a child could have this kind of mentality.
Having said that, is Trump going to withdraw his invitation to Xi as well now. He may do it, hoping to save some face.
I am a pessimist and looking at the events unfolding, the visit of Canadian PM and South Korean President to China and the agreements forged, I am a little hesitant to take these as long term co-operation cast in stone. Rather, China must be very careful not to be blindsided when Trump is no longer in office, and another USA President takes over.
There are already comments on some social media sites that Canadian PM Carney is not as transparent a person to trust totally. After all, he is as White in skin color and as Anglo-Saxon as any Hillbilly. What is going to matter is if the next USA President takes over and decides to unravel the rivalry now ongoing between the USA and Canada. What then is Canada going to do and what is in it for China? China has already experienced the backstabbing by Trudeau over Meng Wenzhou earlier, and there is no guarantee that this is not going to happen again when relations between USA and Canada normalize.
Canada is probably using China as a pressure releasing valve today, and what is going to happen when pressure eases from the USA is unknown. Therefore, amid the jubilation of closer relations between China and Canada, some sense of caution and proportion must be exercised.
Now, I also read a social media expose of a survey about which are the countries that sees China unfavorably and invariably as a threat. One would expect the top two countries to be Japan and the Philippines that have much to dislike China. Yet the surprising revelation was that Ukraine and South Korea topped the survey.
Ukraine's dislike of China stems from the fact that China supported Russia, did not rein in Russia and failed to support NATO. I have no arguments about Ukraine having this mindset.
South Korea's stance surprised me. South Korea's dislike of China is more of being jealousy induced, with China now overwhelming the South Koreans in shipbuilding, EVs, some sectors of lower end smartphones, electronics such as TVs and also the relations between China and North Korea. The fact that China fought on the side of the North during the Korean War is also a mental block in the minds of the South Koreans. Therefore, China must temper its relations with South Korea not completely open-ended but must be done with caution and in measured steps.
The Europeans are now finding out the hard way after decades of supporting the USA and even participating in its attempt to make China and Russia collapse. This is karma, loud and clear and I bear no sympathy for their plight today.
The Europeans, especially Germany, were enjoying cheap Russian energy for decades, yet their delusional leaders just discarded all the benefits in support of the USA. The USA wanted to monopolize the energy market in Europe and made much effort to prevent the Nord Stream 2 Pipelines from being completed, using sanctions against those doing the construction. Russia completed the North Stream 2 pipeline itself.
In order to make the North Steam 2 pipelines unworkable, the USA had to fabricate the National Security fear that Europe will suffer if Russia cuts off energy supply, the usual modus operandi that people are sick and tired of.
Olaf Shulz abruptly refused to allow the North Stream 2 to be put into operation under pressure from the USA. Worse still, he was undoubtedly an accomplice in destroying the pipelines by bombing it in order to make sure it remains unusable.
Now, what has Germany managed to reap in return over what it sowed? Buying expensive energy from the USA and Middle East is the result, that has decimated its industries and pulling Europe into an energy crisis. The Europeans are now suffering and will be suffering from energy pressure from Russia and threats from Trump over Greenland.
As I understand, most European countries, close allies of the USA, are now not on the 'Board of Peace in Gaza'. Trump's scam is not taking off and already dying before being put to work. Yet just listen to braggart Trump glorifying himself by boasting about the members appointing him as 'lifelong' Chairman of the Board, claiming that this was an indication of the need for his great leadership.
Let me prick the balloon. Would Trump even allow anyone else to be chosen as the Chair, knowing that he is dying to be appreciated and praised to high heaven, like a child. Not giving him the Nobel Peace Prize already shows his childish behavior, not to talk about denying him the top job in a scamming entity that he is setting up.
The man is shameless, morally unfit, afflicted by serious oral diarrhea and physically a wreck, trying to make as much news as possible before he kicks the bucket.
For those who are still wondering why the all knowing God allowed himself or his son, Jesus, to be betrayed by Judas and be hung by the Jews, the answer is very simple. God's will cannot be stopped. They play a very important role in their own right, to relieve the stresses of people in an increasingly difficult environment. They bring joy, fun and laughters in their innocent ways. Clowns are meant to be harmless, just playing a role without any seriousness. The professional clowns are paid for doing just that, and they deserved every cent of it, honest living.
Then there are the real clowns that used to spoil everything in their path, messing up everything, people's lives, turning the world topsy turvy. They are the real villains making a living by destruction, by clowning at the expense of others.
In the 21st Century, there is a real need, an existential need for clowns in politics, the more the merrier.
