Beijing has dismissed as “fake news” allegations made earlier by Canberra and Washington that China is intending to set up a military base in the Solomon Islands.
At a press conference on Monday, the Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Wang Wenbin, insisted that the “so-called Chinese military base in the Solomon Islands is completely fake news made up by a few people with ulterior motives.” The diplomat also pointed out that cooperation between the two nations was “based on the principles of mutual equality, mutual benefit and win-win results.”
Wenbin called out Washington’s hypocrisy, saying that the US was among the loudest voices expressing concern over China’s alleged plans to set up a base in Oceania, while itself having “nearly 800 military bases in more than 80 countries.”
The Chinese official went on to remind Washington that the Solomon Islands is an “independent sovereign country, not the ‘backyard’ of the United States and Australia.”
Last Tuesday, China announced that State Councilor Wang Yi and Solomon Islands Foreign Minister Jeremiah Manele had signed a security pact between the two nations.
The US was quick to express concern. The White House National Security Council’s spokesperson claimed that the signing followed a “pattern of China offering shadowy, vague deals with little regional consultation in fishing, resource management, development assistance and now security practices.”
Several days later, the White House revealed that the American delegation to the Solomon Islands had warned the nation’s leadership that the US would “respond accordingly” should Chinese military installations appear in the country.
Canberra has also made it clear that such a military base, which would be some 2,000km (1,200 miles) from Australia’s shores, would represent a “red line.”
Meanwhile, Solomon Islands Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare insisted that the deal was necessary to beef up security and was “guided by our national interests.” He stated last week that the agreement does not allow China to set up a military base on the islands.- Anonymous

Irrespective of whether China, or any other countries, sets up a military base in the Solomon Islands or not, it is none of the business of the Australians, let alone the USA which is thousands of miles away
One of the reasons for the deal is China has alot of investments in the Solomons . The US is trying to sabotage those and the pro Beijing govt including many suspected instigating the anti govt and anti
Chinese riots last year. Also with
revelation Australia policing forces refused to protect Chinese interests on the islands and allowed Chinatown to burn in the riots.
Its rich for US and Australia to suddenly show concern when US
hasn't even an embassy for more than 20 years and Australia cutting aid and talking down on Pacific islanders with superior attitudes.

The Brits think Russia is like little Britain, the size of West Malaysia. Russia is the biggest country in the world, the biggest nuclear power, with a standing army second only to China. Its army is equipped to take on the whole of Europe and the USA.
What is Ukraine? The whole Ukrainian Army is either hiding or refuses to engage the Russians. Those skirmishes were conducted by civilian volunteers and the Nazi and mercenaries.
Very likely Russia has an agreement with the main Ukrainian Army not to attack them if they don't move. Russian bombings were confined to airfields and weapon depots. There is an unwritten and unspoken truce between the Russians and the Ukrainian forces.
Zelensky may be a clown, a traitor to the Ukrainians. But the Ukrainians are no stupid to fight the Russians and ensure their own death and destruction. See how silent the Ukrainian armed forces are. See how they did not fly their fighter aircraft. The few choppers flying around were flown by the mercenaries.
This is a proxy war of the Americans fought by mercenaries and Nazi soldiers, not the Ukrainian Army.
The Russians should flood the steel mills and bury all the rats inside with all their bio weapons.
Australian Police Refused to Protect Chinese Embassy During Solomon Islands Riots
Solomon Islands leader accused Australia of blindsiding him over the announcement of the AUKUS security pact and refusing to protect the Chinese embassy and Chinese-built infrastructure during last year’s riots in the country.
More than 100 members of the Australian Federal Police and Australian Defence Force were sent to the Solomons to help Sogavare quell the violent uprising in November last year.
Sogavare repeated his criticism that Australia refused to protect the Chinese, adding he was “deeply disappointed” that Australia had issued a “blatant denial”.
He said Canberra gave “clear instructions” to not protect the Chinese and called it a “blunder”.
In the nation’s parliament on Friday, Sogavare also criticised Canberra’s lack of consultation with Pacific countries before announcing the AUKUS defence technology sharing pact.
“I learnt of the AUKUS treaty in the media, Mr Speaker. One would expect that as a member of the Pacific family, Solomon Islands and members of the Pacific should have been consulted to ensure this AUKUS treaty is transparent since it will affect the Pacific family by allowing nuclear submarines in Pacific waters,” Sogavare said.
“Oh, but Mr Speaker, I realise that Australia is a sovereign country, which can enter into any treaty it wants to, transparently or not. Which is exactly what they did with AUKUS.
“When Australia signed up to AUKUS, Mr Speaker, we did not become theatrical or hysterical … about the implications this would have for us. We respected Australia’s decision.”
Meanwhile, China's Vice Foreign Minister Xie Feng said that the China and Solomon Islands-signed security pact signed on April 20 is the sacred right of two sovereign states and in line with international law and practice, and asked: What right does Australia have to draw a "red line" between China and the Solomon Islands? If this is not violation of other countries' sovereignty, what is?
"The bilateral security cooperation is open and transparent and not targeted at any third party. It does not conflict with our cooperation with other partners or existing mechanisms in the region, and serves the common interests of both countries and the South Pacific region." Xie said.

The 2021 Solomon Islands unrest was a series of demonstrations and violent riots in Solomon Islands from 24 to 27 November 2021.
It started off as a protest by Malaita for Democracy, a pro-Taiwan group from Malaita province, against the government's decision to recognize China over Taiwan, and turned out violent as protesters attempted to storm Parliament to depose Prime Minister Sogavare.
Businesses, mainly in Honiara's Chinatown district, were burnt and looted. Hundreds of Chinese citizens were left homeless, and three charred bodies were discovered in a burned building in the Chinatown district.
Prime minister Manasseh Sogavare said foreign powers opposed to his 2019 decision to switch the Solomons’ diplomatic allegiance from Taiwan to China were behind the disturbances, and accused Malaita of being “Taiwan’s agent”. Before the diplomatic switch, Taipei had given Solomons’ legislators and senior officials small grants (aka bribes).
