Haze: Are you protected
With the haze issue so current and so personal up close, everyone is feeling it and affected by it, I thought it would be good to listen to the CNA programme last evening. Martin, the host, had three other guests, a medical doctor, the deputy CEO of NEA and a social activist. The programme went on quite well with many interested callers as if one hour was just too short.
By the time the hour was up, I could summarise the programme with three words, confusion, evasion and exasperation. If anyone got the chance to review the programme in the net, you will know what I mean. So many things were said and so many questions were asked, but everything was evasion, confusion and the audience got away so exasperated and frustrated. But not all was lost as there were some very valuable points raised that were enlightening but also confusing at the same time. Only on a couple of questions that a simple answer expected were granted.
I will try to summarise a few of the salient points that I could still recall.
1. Buying of a N95 mask. Many people out there would have believed that getting hold of a N95 mask would solve all their problems and fears. Far from it. Buying a N95 mask is the beginning of their troubles. The first problem is how to wear it properly, which many assumed was natural and easy. Then there are questions of when to use it, how often and how long it can last. More confusions. And the myth provided in the media that the mask is reusable is not exactly right.
2. The manufacturer was quoted to say that the mask can be used for up to 8 hours. What does that mean? It depends on the condition of the PSI and how long is the mask exposed to different PSI level. Anyone wiser?
3. As to when to wear, the mother of all answers is to refer to the NEA website and the official advisory. Now what is that? Ah Peh and Ah Ma dunno leh. So for those ‘boh tak cheh’, not computer literate, so how? Dunno leh. Can Mediacorp put it up for easy reference by the laypeople or not? This must be important right? No one ask, but just accept that you want to know you better know how to get to the NEA website.
4. And to my horror, wearing the mask can be a dangerous thing. Pregnant women better seek medical advice before wearing one or risk harming the foetus. Wearing the mask could also lead to more forceful breathing that may end up more harm than good. And for the kiasu and kiasi, please don’t wear the mask for too long or wear it when sleeping.
5. Forceful breathing is also related to the advice by some to use wet towels. The doctor said wet towel only remove more of the bigger particles. The PM 2.5 could end with greater numbers in the body when one breathes heavily through a wet towel.
6. And what is this, buying poor quality imitation mask thinking it is safe and walking around with it and endangering oneself. How to solve this problem?
7. PSI. This is the next most confusing item other than PM 2.5. Forget about the numbers as they don’t mean a thing to the laypeople. But the terms, very unhealthy and hazardous should mean something right? So everyone thinks so. Now what does very unhealthy mean to you? What can you do and not do? Or what is the meaning of hazardous? Hide under the bed, or go to work as per normal, just take it easy, don’t rush, don’t run, don’t exercise? If that is the case why is it called hazardous? How hazardous is hazardous? You know meh?
8. Now the tricky part. PSI 300 is very unhealthy or hazardous? Some reports said only above PSI 400 is hazardous. But then not really leh. Is exposure to PSI 400 for 10 min or 20 min not hazardous, …never mind. So exposed to how long then will ‘not be never mind’? Oh, like that you cannot use the 3 hour PSI. The very unhealthy and hazardous tags are meant for 24 hour PSI. Why like that one? KNN, how are the laypeople to know? Why put up something that no one knows?
9. Never mind, never mind. Samulah. Would 3 hours of continuous PSI 400 be hazardous, if you know what this word mean? Or would 3 hours of PSI 600 be hazardous or more hazardous than a 24 hour PSI 400? Which one is more serious, one hour exposure to a 3 hr PSI 600 or one hour exposure to a 24 hr PSI 400? Really catch no balls.
10. For all the laypeople listening to the programme, do they really understand what the panel was talking about? I am sure they would want a few simple answers as a guide to their daily activities. I think it will be very helpful if an answer like when 3 hr PSI is 400, this is what it means and what the people should avoid doing. Or when the 24 hr PSI is 400, can’t imagine that happening with a constant 400 average over 24 hours. I would imagine an emergency will be declared and everyone be told to stay inside the bomb shelters and wear their N95s at the same time.
11. And, this one the GPs will all be very happy to know. When experiencing any difficulties or not sure, go and check with the GPs. You think seeing a GP is for free ah?
12. One interesting point for smokers. When the haze is dense outside, and when all the doors and windows are closed, please do not smoke inside the house. Not even when the aircon is on. I think no need to explain why for this. And watch what you are cooking if they add to air pollution inside a closed home.
I must say many things were spoken, many questions asked, many were ‘elar’ or the answers were evasive. And if not sure, refer to NEA website or refer to the 24 hr PSI. What if a person wants to go out to do something and the eyes say don’t go? Refer to the 24 hr PSI. What nonsense!
It would be good that a little time should be allotted for the panel host to summarise a few key points in simple forms for the listeners so that at least they can pick up a few pointers of the do’s and don’ts and not the maybe like this, maybe like that, or it depends on this or that or how long or how high the PSI.
Damn confusing and damn ‘pek chek’ when the programme came to a close. If I can feel jialat, dunno about all the aunties and uncles.

Another confusion in the 'ah pek and ah mah's' minds- they thought they were going to get what they paid these expensive guys and dolls for.
I think it may be part of their job for the host and guests to appear on TV and answer questions. So they have a job to do.
Or I would call it another point for their resumes. Just like ECA points for students.
So I would think the outcome of doing their job in this instance is secondary. Anyway, it is also not easy to get a good outcome, eg making RB and the like minded being clear, satisfied and not hazy, tio bo?
Actually if the mask really cannot help much to protect from the haze, can appearing on TV to explain and answer help, you say lah.
No wonder RB described the programme show as confusion, evasion and exasperation. Rightly so.
Yes, I became more confused and hazy even lost after watching and listening to the Programne.
What the fuck! Those chaps made living more difficult than the Haze itself. Seems liked they have put us in a reading of over 500 at the PM 2.5 Level.
The haze is just like our PAP gahmen.
The more closely you look and check.
The more confused and exasperated you become because the facts can be so elusive.
We've had 16 years since the haze started in 1997 to get this right.
But then again.
We've had 50 years since 1965 to also get that right.
Tio bo?
Alamak, I'm not in Singapore, so I missed this comedy show.
>> Now what is that? Ah Peh and Ah Ma dunno leh. So for those ‘boh tak cheh’, not computer literate, so how? Dunno leh.
Fuck them. Let them choke. There is no excuse these days not to know how to use the internet. And you don't need to be computer literate, because you don't need a computer. Most cheap mobile phones have internet capability. All you have to do is look at the screen, select the "picture" (icon), and press button.
>> Can Mediacorp put it up for easy reference by the laypeople or not?
"Laypeople"? Please lah, we are all mostly "laypeople", and most of us adapt to change and adopt the tech in our lives.
How high does your IQ have to be to tap on and off with your Ezy Link card on the bus or train? You don't have to know about GPS, or encrypted transmission of data...just tap. There you are: everyone is a tech genius :-)
PAP is not ready. That is so clear. Masks were not available even though government said it has a stock of 9m masks. Why not issuing out immediately. Why CC & RC not helping to issue these masks. Forget about organising social events but help people to breath better. Cheah!
The purpose of a 24 hr PSI is only as good as the data for rainfall over a month or a year. It is just a statistic for long term record.
What the people want to know is the present, the now. Is it flooding or is the air dangerous to go outdoor. An hourly number is ok but it should be a live PSI for people to make a decision on what to do.
A present PSI 600 may have a 24 hr PSI of 200. One can be deadly and one tolerable. A person does not make a decision based on the average of 24 hrs to take a risk of going out.
"24 hr PSI"
Is 24 hr PSI effective ? Definitely YES according to PAP.
Surely thing can even be more effective if PAP goes for more drastic measure for more effectiveness.
PAP can incrementally over the years in span of 100 years make the PSI
- a per week reporting (1st phase)
- a per month reporting (2nd phase)
- a per year reporting (3rd phase)
- a once-in-50-years reporting (ultimate phase)
and if PSI reach 600, no need for reporting lah, just trust PAP that it is for your own good.
please vote PAP for more good years, healthy body and golden period, and most importantly, all for your own good.
What Singapore can teach the Indonesia Govt how to manage unlicensed burning. Use the same formula for licensing websites.
Plantation owners to apply for licence and put up a bond of $50m. When they broke the no burning rules, the penalty is $200m or imprisonment or both.
Think this may work. It is a win win for the Indon Govt and the plantation owners and for Malaysia and Singapore also.
@ 1030:
>> MS, you are an arrogant asshole!
True. One of my many excellent traits, I can assure you ;-)
Dont blame everthing on PAP leh!
Sinkies live under PAP for 50 years and more. Do they know PAP?
Sinkies have been liked living in a daze which is definitely not caused or due to the haze.
As for the NEA Chap in the Said Vote Programme, he knows nothing about weather condition. Everything he said was from his colleagues. It was as though he was speaking on something that had nothing to do with his appointment in NEA.
If one listened to him and did not get confused, it must be that the listener was in a daze due to the haze.
I lost all faith in some of the folks that are supposed to make us live better. They are doing the Opposite.
The programme was engulfed in haze with a PSI of 700.
These people should seriously consider giving closed door speeches in the school of Rajaratnam.
I can't think of a better for hopeless and confused people to just go, poof! and disappear for good.
You know that is what is to be expected, first with the mask makers having their GSS and making lots of money from selling the mask sparked by the initial fears.
After most people have bought their masks, then it is the time to educate them on the cons and doubts about the how, when, what and ifs, because the money had already gone into someone's pocket and he already laughed all the way to the bank. Why can't they start the consumer education earlier? In fact, two decades ago, the haze already started.
If I may say so, the manufacturer would probably be extremely happy if you people just change the mask every hour, not 8 hours or longer. They will then tell you it is for your own good, but will not tell you such freaquent changes will be extremely good for their bottom line and pockets.
I am surprised that some people still think watching that stupid programme is going to reap some benefit in terms of education. And though the same people will tell you that they have more questions and confusion after watching it, some will still wait for more of it to continue to whet their confusion appetite.
Can we really blame the Sinkie mentality of voting PAP, election after election, despite all the complaints about floods, crowded trains, expensive homes, expanding population, haze and anything under the sun? It figures.
Now we wonder if we have been living in 'hazy' conditions under the PAP leadership. I think being 'smoked' is one of the key traits of beng a Singaporean - the blur, 'huh?' look.
Don't you think the program is 'just for show' that the government IS really doing something when it is not doing anything actually? It has mostly been the norm all these years for the PAP to bring in the intellectuals and scholars to solve a simple problem most taxi-drivers or coffee-shop person have the answer for.
These intellects mainly seek to confuse, complicate and then exasperate the common people; often bringing in useless data and technical jargons that have absolutely no benefits to one such as you and I.
We have all been 'smoking Malboro' and bluffing ourselves.

Talking Point: The Vote Special - The Haze
http://www.channelnewsasia.com/tv/talking-point-the-vote/720344.html
Here's the programme.
In case you are too free like our Millionaire Minsters and don't know how to waste your time more productively.
47 minutes of hot air.
Is your Indonesian name:
WhyUdono?
My grandmother is;
Annie How Peh Million.
My father is;
Peh Million StillDono
My name is;
Pap (Pronounced as Pak) Dono DonCare
No money - then try to live with it. Got money - can always buy air ticket and go somewhere.
In this world, only the rich and powerful has protection. We are all just mammals waiting for our turn to die. But one thing for sure, pap has oversold their capabilities and competency. The haze has revealed that they are as clueless and unprepared as the opposition or any parties that just formed. The first thing to go is their unjustifiable high pay cheque and budget that is really a huge burden for the entire population.
I also want to say that. They are obscenely over paid for the stupid work they are doing. And they don't feel ashame of themselves to collect those millions. They are not worth $10k a month.
And those that are really doing nothing and collecting all the big pay and bonuses, don't they have a conscience?
This haze really makes them look extremely stupid and undeserving of their pay.
"Damn confusing and damn ‘pek chek’ when the programme came to a close. "
As with typical PAP's message, if they can't convince you, they confuse you, and now that you are even more confuse then means you must be reading the right thing.
Don't despair and be thankful that you are confused because it only show that you are reading the right thing.
Hi RB - just trying to repay all the information that I have consumed from your postings.....
Regarding N95 masks - Facemasks and N95 respirators are devices that may help prevent the spread of germs (viruses and bacteria) from one person to another. They are one part of an infection-control strategy that should also include frequent hand washing and social distancing.
Facemasks and N95 respirators should not be shared. Facemasks and respirators may become contaminated with germs (viruses and bacteria) that can be spread between people......IT IS A SINGLE USE DEVICE

about PM2.5........
...."Small particles of concern include “fine particles” (such as those found in smoke and haze), which are 2.5
micrometers in diameter or less;......exercise may causeactivity cause people to breathe faster and more
deeply—and to take more particles into their lungs." Kids and older people are more at risk. EPA has published a useful pamphlet
http://www.epa.gov/airnow/particle/pm-color.pdf
Even though the air smells alot better and the PSI is in the good range, PM2.5 takes a longer time to drop, so be careful about active exercise that will increase you breathing and heart rate........there is a cumulative effect. If you want to read more, EPA has published a quantitative health risk assessment here...http://www.epa.gov/ttn/naaqs/standards/pm/data/PM_RA_FINAL_June_2010.pdf
