What problem is this?
‘This govt is truly hopeless. Not only has it squandered billions and billions on stupid schemes it has now allowed the property market to rise to unsustainable levels and create a disastrous lack of availability of homes. It has been aware of the DRAMATIC increase in overseas investment in residential property but wanted to shaft all those ignorant sheeple aka 'working families' even further. It's time to contact your local senator and demand they put an end to the rest of their mad plans. No more looking after foreigners before Australians. No more overseas property investors when Australians can not even purchase homes. No more large unskilled migration when Australians can not find work. No more supporting welfare shopping asylum seekers when Australian pensioners can barely afford food. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH.’
The above was reported in news.com.au. There is an uncanny similarity in what is happening in the Australian property scene and what is happening here. But the difference stops right there. The Australians are really facing a serious problem and they are very unhappy with the govt. On the contrary, we don’t really have any problem. If there is any problem, it is a happy one. The people are all laughing to the bank and inviting more foreigners to invest in our properties here. It is a win win situation. The foreigners speculate and make money from their property speculations. The Singaporeans are all happy that their properties are gaining in value. There are no losers.
This is the big difference and the quality of the govt shows. We are so fortunate to have a good govt that could turn an otherwise bad situation into a happy one. Thumbs up to the govt, especially Mah Bow Tan, for making so many Singaporeans rich and happy, and to the property speculators too, both foreign and local. The Australians need to send a team of their govt officials to study how we did it.

The outbacks and outlying areas can accommodate a million times the population of SIN and everyone can have big beautiful garden and car porches right infront of their houses. This is the greatest difference.

Our property developers are running out of land banks here. It would be good to work out a govt to govt cooperation programme and get our developers to rebuild Australia and supply them with world class affordable housing.
Then Australia can open the door to all the property speculators across the world to invest there. With the speculators shifting to OZ, it may reduce the heat here a bit.

It will be Australia's big gain if he becomes their housing minister. But as you said, Australia could not afford to pay him.
Then, we'll say, "Mabuhay" to Mah's new career in Australia. Hehe.
Seriously, now is the time to sell the Aussies the idea of a Singapore style city in one of their more congenial states same as what we did in Suzhou and Tianjin. Perth would be a nice place to start and I'm sure the Aussies who plays cricket will not play us out!
If anyone tells me that our parliamentarians do not owned assets oversea. I will not believe my own ears.
Many may even have their offsprings living overseas. Logical and reasonable deductions.

Wally said it right, with some correction: what the Aussie media says and what people in general say are two different things.
Australians forget that they "own" a whole fucking continent. The reason there is a "shortage" of homes is not because of a shrotage of land but over zealous govt meddling in the economy.
Licenses are expensive. The govt makes developers jump through hoops and hoops of regulation. Infrastructure is govt controlled and regulated. The unions demand unreasonable conditions for workers making labour more costly. And then there are the "angry" voters who don't want cheap labour from overseas because they are scared of "losing their jobs" -- union protected, wage-controlled jobs for lazy motherfuckers.
With all these "special interests" at play, no wonder there are shortages, when there should instead be abundance. For many years, Australian homes were CHEAP -- good value for money. Now they are unreasonably expensive despite the population being only a mere 21 million.
Immediate suspects: an over regulatory govt and a significant lazy, entitlement-mentality welfare-state voter who expects their govt to "protect them", their jobs and give them cheap homes, when it is the stupid voter plus govt which created the problem in the first place.
For the many decades I've lived here (I love the beach), I have never shifted my position on open borders, free labour markets, and diminishing govt interference and union power.
Its a very much informative blog and property investment is a solid one that will benefit both ends of the business - the bank and the investor.
P.S. Singapore seems to be moving that way: the people expect their govt to "provide" for them: guranteed jobs, cheap ("affordable") homes, free money, free school, cheap bus and trains.... add to the list. The welfare/expectation state has arrived in once laisez-faire Singapore.... which means the inevitable Matilah Singapura

Can land be bought and you just hire casual craftsmen to build it instead of buying through the developers? Australian tradesmen are to my mind generally very disciplined and they wouldn't take you for a ride.
That may speed up things and cut corners as well as costs. Land is generally cheap and abundant in Australia.

Depends where the land is. Agri land is premium. City land is premium. Temasek is buying heaps of rural land just for the water rights.
Yes, Aussie tradespeople are generally fair and do excellent work -- the main reason is that they are self-employed business people -- no union "protection".
You can register yourself as an "owner-builder", buy the land, and hire tradespeople according to your desires. That is not the problem. Having the govt approve your plans and hopefully there is infrastructure already there. If there isn't, be prepared to shell out tens of thousands for power, sewage, water, etc.

Aussie properties are still affordable if one is not too lazy to manage the construction.
There are also many small firms in Australia doing such "project management". You don't have to buy from developers.
