Going ahead with the Water Festival?
We respect the foreigners here. So we are going to celebrate their Water Festival. Do we respect other foreigners and celebrate their festivals as well? If we don't, does it mean that we are not respecting them?
What if we celebrate some and don't celebrate some? Would those affected feel slighted and not respected?
What if we celebrate this year because it is the in thing and don't celebrate in the following year or years? Would the foreigners say we have stop respecting them?

You can celebrate it but will never ever be the same as experienced you will get it back in Myanmar or Thailand. Go to Myanmar or Thailand for full spectacles with food, floats and cultural entertainments, it is cheap anyway.
you already have casinos, unversal theme park, etc, ect for $$$. As for art and culture Singapore has rojak(chinese, malay, indian,& eurasian) which is unique and should be proud of it and satisfy with it, no need to add others.
No freigners are going to be slighted because you don't celebrate their cultures or festivals that comes with borders and boundaries.
Only thing is Singapore and Singaporeans will be seen as simply Kia Su.
don't forget light festival in oct.
Get real.
We only celebrate when there is a critical mass of foreign T(?) from certain countries.
Why?
They are the new citizens that's why. Gotta be nice to them ok. "How to win friends and influence people."
有付出才有回报。
Hehe.
I like the Indian colour powder festival, the tomato and orange smashing of the Spanish?, the cheese rolling down the hill festival, the tuna throwing festival, the American rodeo festival, the German beer drinking festival....
As a SINNER me likes all festivals as well as funerals. However, me am mindful that in Rome do what the Romans do.
In SIN, i expect foreigners to behave like SINNERS, they got to rspect OUR CULTURE. Mind You, me is never a chauvinist, me likes foreigners, be they tourists or settlers, me welcomes all.

You know, this is to show Dr Mahathir that we have plenty of water to splash around, when parts of Malaysia are having droughts.
As they say, if you have it, flaunt it.
Our water programme is something we must congratulate the govt for a job well done. Now we can sell them water when there is a drought up north.
Good job Yaacob.
relax lah redbean. It's only a fextival....
...like the one called "easter" by the invading Christians, and thus been a fixture in S'pore society since the "white foreigners" brought their frunny religion with them way back in the 1800's.
Everyone who originates from other lands -- Singapore has always had a constant stream of immigrants -- brings some of the culture with them. Usually the silly, irrational, bat-shit crazy and childish bits, which happen to also be the funniest, cause occasional friction, dividsion and in-fighting and outright warfare.
Relax lah. They're only being their sub-human selves :)
I am very relax, just posting for my own enjoyment: )
i am a portuguese eurasian, my family has been in this region for the past 500 years. my grandfather and his father were defending S'pore in the SVC long before there was an SAF.
We too have a water festival in Malacca, called "intrudu". how about respecting our culture and traditions?
Oh dear, someone has forgotten about you guys. But don't worry, the celebrating of this water festival is the beginning. I am sure a task force must have been set up to look at all the festivals that will be celebrated so that no group will feel not respected, and a budget will be provided.
I learn a new word and a new festival, intrudu. Thanks.
Sometimes I feel that some of our politicians have been infected with the 'chau chwee' syndrome.
I am an Eskimo from the Artic circule.
I also like my festival to be celebrated. It's call ooch ooch. We use snow balls to threw one anothe at the begining of spring in mid aprile. I understend here no snow balls but can use golf balls instead. Can you also sugest to big chief?
If Eskimo talks to big chief directly himself, sure on. Big chief takes good care of foreigners.
