Plans afoot to ease Jalan Kayu congestion
This heading was followed by a letter from Yam Meng Keng, Chairman, Jlan Kay CCC/EUP Working Committee in the Today paper. He thank George Pasqual and Jayandran Sandra Alison for their letters on the condition of Jalan Kayu Estate. It seems that the estate is also faced with congestion problem and this will be resolved soon.
Who knows, ERP gantries could soon be erected in Jalan Kayu. For solving traffic flow problem, nothing is more effective than ERP.
I would not dare to complain about congestion in my estate. It could be an invitation for more ERPs.

Keep it simple.
Build bigger roads.
Very little space left for bigger roads, unless vacate and compensate residents.
Solution: Build double or triple layers of roads, like in some big cities.
having bigger roads means no place for the 6.5 mil people. having multi layer roads mean not many will be able to afford to drive on them.
What for? No jams means no raising of ERP rates.
To build bigger roads, private land will have to be bought. Nowadays govt pays market rates.
You can have multi level road ways or multi storey domiciles or a combination of both.
There are 8.5. million people on Manhattan island, New York which is slightly smaller than S'pore. So, it's a bit crowded. It is still one heck of a city and a bloody good fun place to live, and work.
manhattan has the whole of america as a hinterland to escape to. for us, anytime the causeway can be cut and the only place to go is the southern island and the southern sea.
it is always better to keep some land as reserves. once everything is fully built, that is the end.
our land space is finite no matter how many levels we can build. it will sink, i bet you.

Dude, the entire land mass on earth is finite.
Sure there is a finite amount of building that can be done. But in S'pore, it isn't even close yet. Most of the buildings are still to low-rise.
it is a matter of what one values. opportunity cost.
the whole problem the world is facing is over population and overbuilt.
i rather live in oz than in an overbuilt city where there is no option like living off the land.
everything has to be paid in fiat currency. no currency, sampai mati.

Areas are only "overbuilt' when the infrastructure can't cope with demand. And the QUALITY of infrastructure is a by-product of the overall WEALTH of the country.
That's the fundamental difference between densely populated 1st world and 3rd world cities: in the 1st world the sheer abundance of wealth makes it possible to have fantastic infrastructure. The populous 3rd world cities are buckets of shit because they don't have the infrastructure to cope.
