'The govt failed to deliver a Swiss standard of living'
Many have accused the govt of failing to live up to its promise to give the people a Swiss standard of living. But how fair is this criticism? Some may not yet attain this high standard of living. And it is expected that some will never reach there. The less able must be expected to live and feed on less. The widening income gap is only a natural and uncontrollable state of things caused by globalisation.
The people must be realistic and cannot expect everyone to reach the Swiss standard of living in such a short time. Some will get there first and some later. One day all will get there. As of today, many who used to live in HDB flats have already move into huge bungalows and have enough fortune to last at least 5 generations without having to work. And all because of the govt and all the good policies to raise the standard of living of its people.
The govt has achieved what it set out to do, at least partially. This is telling the whole truth, the whole picture and not half truth. Telling half truth is to blame the govt for not doing what it promised. This myth that the govt has failed has to be debunked.
The govt has made it happened to many Singaporeans to attain the Swiss standard of living, even surpassing it.

After cooling down my blog, my foreign blog actually shoot past 40,000pts this morning...
It'd be heated up again soon... Cos I'd be back in the commanding chair. Hehehehe...
And that BeggarC is still talking cock in YP forum. How ignorant of him. Sigh...
The govt has provided the opportunities for every citizen to attain that standard. Those who have taken advantage have reaped the rewards. Those woho hasn't have only themselves to blame for not taking up those opportunities. It is not the role of the govt to ensure that everyone gets the same portion. That happens only in communist countries.
Anonymous...
The people have given opportunities for the govt to assist them adequately... to attain higher support.
The govt who'd provide well will get the support, the govt who can't... will (as MM's quote) be removed.
Even in feudal age, the people are the equal (to some wise emperors)... what of a people elected one? Hahahahaha...
The govt got good support in May. Hence, it means the govt has provided well. I rest my case.
to think that the support of the people is settled by one general election is a dangerous thought.
How else should it be settled ? To gain favors from the government, you need to strike when it is in the most need for something that you have. That opportunity comes every five years, yet time and again, the PAP has been returned to power with majorities many ruling parties in other countries can only dream about. That has to count for something.
hi elfred,
what the the url of your highly secretive blog that no one knows?
let's face it, the pap has done many things right for many years.
we are discussing only some of the things that we disagree. not necessary that we are right and the pap is wrong. only that we think it should be done differently. whether the pap agrees or disagrees it is their prerogatives. and it is our prerogatives to air our views.
Secret. Maybe two years later then tell you. Hehehe...
let's face it, the pap has done many things right for many years.
I fully agree with you 100% on this one as I too believe that this government is credible and respectable.
Nevertheless, I disagree on the exorbitant salaries that our ministers are paid. Personally I dont see the basis why civil servants should be paid so highly. I strongly believe that they should revise the formula, in order to peg our ministers' pay to the averages of what the US, Japan and China's leaders are getting. I think HR professionals would benchmark and test the pay scales for the civil servant industry that way.
See, if the US president needed a raise, I cant imagine him telling the nation that his will be pegged to bill gates or warren buffet's wealth becos he works hard and deserves it, or that his should be 1% of the country's trillion dollars gdp like discount real estate brokers get. Or that he has to be well paid in order that fort knox is left intact.
Anonymous must be a foreigner... doesn't sound making sense of Singaporeans in a unique state...
Maybe you'd find a political life outside textbooks... Hehehe...
No offence. I suppose it's a matter of experience. And Singapore is so unique that with a non-corrupted govt... expecting us to have bottom-line as China nationals is hilarious.
You gotta be realistic.
i also agree with anonymous on the issue of minister's pay. in this i believe the whole population also agree except for those who are favourably affected.
also elfred, there are many anonymous here and cannot pin point who is who. there are singaporeans, prs and foreign talents. what is important is to be able to engage in sensible discussion. and none of us is right or wrong, just a difference of opinion.
