Overseas Chinese are not classified as Mainland Chinese, as they have adopted citizenship other than from China. But that does not detract them from the fact that all Chinese overseas or not have their roots in Mainland China.
Overseas Chinese mostly, other than bananas, still have close identity with China. Some still have relatives in China and still have an interest in what is happening in China. This had already been shown during the war against the Japanese, when oversea Chinese provided much needed resources and funding for the war effort in China. Sun Yat Sen even came to Singapore for a spell to escape the Japanese.
Sinkies Chinese r uniquely different from PRC, yes, they have root to PRC but some part of this community had mixed marriages or inter-racial mixed marriages causing it to dilute its Chinese-ness identify. As what Kee Qiu had said in a S- dialogue:" we r not pro US, we not r pro China, we r pro ASEAN.." meaning we r ASEAN Chinese...
Now I more or less understand why some older parents scold their children 'chap cheng kia' - 'boh ka si'.
