Because China does not participate in killing using wars over the last several decades, so they keep bringing up the Tiananmen Square incident, Mao's Great Leap Forward casualties and persecution of anti-Government dissidents. They may even bring up the COVID story in Wuhan.
Those dissidents from Hong Kong, fearing persecution, thought that the West loved them so much, throwing a carrot for them to flee to avoid persecution and enjoy a life of luxury. Now, those dissidents from Hong Kong are regretting their asylum seeking antic in the UK. Without decent jobs, without homes, high living costs and being threatened to be exiled to Rwanda, life is not what they had hoped for. Some had been talking about returning to Hong Kong, but those who still live comfortably in Hong Kong are telling them to stay away.
Why would those in Hong Kong want them back to create trouble when the time comes? Hong Kong is peacefully prospering now, leveraging on the Chinese mainland progress, with just another twenty years left to go before the Chinese Government takes over control of Hong Kong fully. Whether Hong Kong gets to retain its 'one country two systems' is left to be seen. But what the mainland Chinese are enjoying is not anything inferior to what Hong Kong people are enjoying, except being able to vote. The voting is after all still vetted by the Chinese Government to prevent subterfuge.
But closer to the end of the 50-year timeline for Hong Kong's capitalist Government to return fully under China's control, expect plenty of attempts to instigate and create uncertainties, chaos and fear in Hong Kong. I can bet this is going to happen. It is in the playbook of the USA and the West. They will never miss the opportunity to extract their pound of flesh from China.

Immediately after the return of Hong Kong to China in 1997, George Soros, the financial predator, tried to destabilize Hong Kong's financial system, targeting the HK$ with his US$40 billion fortune. Scott Bessant was then his lieutenant overseeing the raid. That attack failed when China stepped in. Remember that China was then far from being rich, but it did stop the predator in his tracks and left him licking his wounds with massive losses. It was later to be revealed that all his attempts have succeeded elsewhere but failed against Hong Kong. Today, both George Soros and Scott Bessant have axes to grind against China. Trump probably chose Scott Bessant for his anit-China stance to be his Treasury chief.
When the fifty-year deadline comes around, we can expect more of such attacks and demonization against Hong Kong and China, fermenting fear in Hong Kong's financial sector and Western companies pulling out of Hong Kong like in 1997. Will the UK continue with its political asylum antic that has fallen flat on its face. We can expect that again in different form, which is all in the Western playbook.
The point I am trying to say is that China is not like the China in 1997. China's pocket today is deeper than any other country and any number of George Soros combined that wants to try their luck dabbling in the financial system of Hong Kong or China.
The more they dig, the more we also dig. No one talks about the genocides in North America for decades. It was supposed to be buried under the carpet for good. Then they tried to fabricate the genocides in Xinjiang. That started the digging out of old bones that the West had tried to hide. Someone is now digging into the days when the USA Government was paying its citizens to steal technology from the Europeans. Imagine Government sponsored theft that had stayed hidden for decades. The pot calling the kettle black now finds out it is blacker.
