Even Mahathir knows that China had little ambition to dominate when Admiral Cheng Hos visited Malacca, but did not return to colonise it. The Portuguese, on the other hand, came, saw and returned with an army to colonise Malacca.
Trying to rule the world is easier said than done. Countries doing so need military and economic power that will eventually bankrupt them. Little Britain is a perfect example. China has both attributes, economic and military power, but decides it is better to improve their own people's lives than spend their wealth on unproductive wars and needing massive resources to hold on to the land seized by them.
China is even doing better by trying to improve the lives of others living around the world. And that has not gone unreciprocated by those countries now reaping the rewards of China's infrastructure projects. Dare I say, even more countries will refrained from voting against China at the UN should war with Taiwan erupt.
China and Russia would have done the world a great service by ending the USA hegemony of wars and destruction. That alone is a job well done.

PS. The Empire thing is a red herring, a mischievous allegation created by the Americans to raise China as a target to be feared and attacked. The Empire is the American Empire that they are desperately trying to hold on to. The Americans and the West needed empires to plunder and loot.
China has become rich by hard work ethics and trade, making goods and services for the world. There is no need for China to want to loot and plunder weaker countries. Building empires is never in the DNA of China but in the vicious savages of the West.
Today the American Empire thrives on starting wars and selling weapons. They need a strong Empire to control the world and to protect themselves from criminal charges and war crimes. And they need to keep themselves very, very busy fixing this country or that country just to protect the empire, wasting a lot of time, manpower and resources making enemies everywhere.
China sells consumers goods and services to prosper.

Roman model vs Chinese Confucian model of civilisation.
Which one pass the test of time?
(Hint: the western one is a massive failure)

Please lah uncle. I am LONG China. China has every reason to step up as a global force, a superpower just because of its size. In this world, the bigger you get, the richer you become, you HAVE TO proportionately increase the size of your military because you have more "value" to protect.
I've done a "deep dive" on Putin this week, going thru all the old interviews...direct stuff, not the stuff reported by the media...and distorted to their view. The man, his EXACT words.
Both China and Russia are FED UP of a unipolar world where the USA gets to determine everything for everyone, including what currency should be used for global trade, economics, and finance....plus the self-proclaimed "right" to meddle in the internal affairs of other sovereign states, including their so-called "allies" (Vassals)
UK, Australia, Canada, the EU, NZ are all slowly losing their autonomy as they are increasingly "obeying" the whims of the Plutocrats in Washington.
I have watched Australia become less Australian and more a vassal state of the USA, becomeing the USA's "attack dog" in the Pacific. So yes, I have changed my attitude to this country I've called "home" for 45 years. I really DON'T LIKE what it has become.
But back to China. They are facing serious issues for the future. Their demographics look TERRIBLE---they are one of the quickest aging societies. They have no food or energy security....if they don't import, there's no power and people will starve.
A move toward "de-globalization" will have severe impacts on society and the economy, hitting them around 2050.
The regime is well aware of these challenges, which is why they are stepping it up with the tech, domestic production and a race toward "self sufficiency".
Not to worry for China. Singapore got practically nothing and still importing foreigners here like crazy. If Singapore can go crazy without any resources, China sure got no problem.

What you talking lah? S'pore's human resources are world renowned. Deepwater harbour is considered our "natural resource". As a result, we rock the world's shipping trade.
Plus we look after a huge chunk of the world's money from high net worth individuals, to sovereigns to global corps, corrupt dictators, and even Russian oligarchs, the Burmese junta, morally-decrepit Indonesian politicians.
Importing foreigners is only one thing. We've imported and are custodians of foreign WEALTH.
What you want some more? 🤷🏻♂️
