Dr Paul Cheung - 8m population no problem

'Singapolitics.sg, 28 Jan 2013

Singapore can, if it wants, accommodate eight million people. That is Dr Cheung's belief.

The Hong Kong-born Singaporean, 59, spent close to 30 years monitoring the interplay between Singapore's population and economic growth, including 14 years as the Government's chief statistician.

"We must always plan for the upper limit. We have to be creative and have in mind urban infrastructure for a much larger population," Dr Cheung says….'

I think Dr Cheung is being too conservative. I personally believe that this island can take in 20m or more, if we want to. But prepare to live a life of a 20m population city in a little piece of rock. What is the problem if one is willing to adapt and pay the price for it? Sure can one.

The question is, why bring this Dr Cheung and a 8m number into the picture? Is this a case of if our properties are expensive, just bring in another country with more expensive properties to make people feel that we are still cheaper? And we can claim we are better off? So if we are planning to fill the island with 7m, bringing in 8m will make 7m looks like small change isn’t it.

What is the intention and purpose of all these, and the 7m White Paper?

Ok, Dr Cheung qualified by saying if we want. Do the Singaporeans want a 7m or 8m population? Who really wants such a population and do they mind ask the rest of the Singaporeans if they mind?

This is called managing expectations. Throw some high numbers - 8 million or 10 million. Personally, I prefer redbean's 20 million. Then settle for 7 million and expect the people to be grateful for this small mercy.

Sure 8 million is no problem and can be done. Put more HDB blocks (but minus those 4,349sf penthouses) in Pulau Ubin and Tekong. Built causeways or bridges to those islands. Convert all the golf courses into HDB estates. Make sure there are enough hospital beds. Make sure the doubling of MRT lines are done ahead of the increase. Tear down districts 9, 10 and 11 and convert them into HDB estates. Build HDB blocks with minimum of 50 stories each.

Voila - done.

Anonymous said...

So, 7m wasn't that bad after all. I bet someone more qualified will come out with 9m mark soon.

Ok, ok, redbean already beat him to it. So, 20m is the target, if we want. It is just like the American debt ceiling, just keep raising it if it is not enough.

Anonymous said...

Oldman already wanted 8mln, about 15 years ago...to be like Hong Kong and have critical "domestic demand".
No one dare question his logic despite globalization that resulted in borderless economics. In fact the smaller, the more nimble and is better.

Paul Cheung is a YESMan since yesteryears.

Singapore great human influx is a result of flaw-outdated thinking and blind YesMan hasty implementation without thinking of proper infrastrutural preparation & effects on asset bubble & prices.

Now we as a nation is caught in a mudpool; 1. if curb FTs & foreign capital asset bubble will burst, 2. if continue FTs & foreign capital influx Singaporeans will suffer even more as infrastructure & social culture not ready, with an attendant bigger gigantic asset bubble.

Thanks to hasty & greedy policies from our most over-paid and compensated ministers in the world like Malboro Tan.
Now no more easy solution.

Vote PAP if you want a population of 8 million.
It really is that simple.

Anonymous said...

Well majority that is 60% voted for pap govt and if pap set 7 million target u can not complain what. Tio bo? Some more it is less than 20 million suggested by red bean mah

Let's not run around like headless chicken. Let me understand what this idiot is saying. They ram up the population to 8 million. As this will produce growth. OK let's say we finally reach this figure. Then what? We ram the population to 10 million? Why kind of logic is that, bringing in more people to grow the economy? What country in the world even does that?

This is what happens when all you have the worlds priciest planners who really only ONE way and NO other way to grow the economy.

You all better figure out whether my logic makes more sense of theirs.

The answer to this problem, other than voting them out, is to get them to change the pay formula to detach from the four letter word growth.

Why didn`t Dr. Cheung say this when Teh Cheang Wan explained in Parliament (with LKY beside him, smiling in agreement) that Singapore`s population can only be around 3million? It seems to me that his statement is calculated to prepare the ground for the discussion on the White Paper on Poppulation projecting a 7million figure. Some months ago we have Liu Thai Ker saying that Singapore can sustain 6 million population. Was he not that Chief Planner under Teh Cheang Wan at that time? Teh even stated that HDB flats can only be built up to 30 storeys. Someone should reproduce his speech to Parliament.

Anonymous said...

So it was 3 million is enough once, then 4 million is needed, now 6 million not enough, and 8 million sounds about it. By when, dunno, but presumably soonest possible, otherwise economy will die, housing prices will fall, people won't have jobs etc etc. Then we can decide if 8 million is enough. Probably not by 2020.

I am going to invest in storage facilities. Homes are soon going to be so small, there may not be enough place for furniture, let's not talk of other things. We'll all just keep one week's change of underwear and a couple of changes of clothes in our wardrobes. Enough food for a couple of days should be it. No place lah in the dinky fridge.

The island will be criss-crossed with roads for delivery vehicles to keep delivering, and since we'll all have to make extra trips to keep up supplies of things like food, go get your clothes from an outside storage, pick up your text books from some cupboard somewhere else, there should be thousands more buses and trains running for all this extra travel. Many many more MRT lines needed than what's planned for now. So transport looks like another good area to invest your money. And of course, construction.

Maybe we can just annex Johor. If it's not big enough, we'll simply go rent some more states from Malaysia. Better still, we'll just take over the whole of Malaysia. The Malaysians can go stay someplace else.

Water? Aiyah, dun worry lah. Buy lah. From where? Dunno, but if got money sure can buy wan. Food? Aiyah, grow it somewhere else lah.

The people will not mind 10 millions or more.
Who are against population growth? Definitely not businessman, retailer, hawker, taxi driver and other service providers.
Who else are left out? Few is the answer, amongst the most unhappy will probably be would be house buyers. But, once they get their properties, they will be praying for it to rise in value. That is how pragmatic Sinkies are.

Sinkies will also want food within walking distance and available 7/11 and public transports to be available
near their doorsteps.
They are likely to look for jobs when they stop schooling or after NS. When businesses succeed due to high consumption which invariably result from increased population, many jobs become available in F&B, Service Sector and others.

To keep the economic momentum
going, it does have to depend on population growth as the fuel to keep the economy engine going. So how?

You guys read it first here, on this blog by about over a year ago I said 9-15 million is possible. And there are private studies in existence which support various cases and scenarios.

It's not going to matter who or what form the government is. The population is going to increase not only in Singapore, but in most urban areas aka "global cities".

Who does it benefit when the population keeps increasing? Not the ordinary folks but the ruling class who own all the business dependant on population size and landlords. The ordinary folks will only lose out - financially, morally and socially. We have to vote alternative party to stop this crazy pursuit. At least this guy told us one thing. It is not due to fertility rate but due to greed of the ruling class that there is this large amount for foreigners.

Let them bring more onto this rock Red Bean. then the faster we can kick the PAP out. We just need a good reason. Angry men are filling the streets.

Anonymous said...

Hey man, more from outside means PAP more secure, because new citizens are the building blocks of the power base for the PAP in future.

By then, true blue Singapore citizens might become as rare as the red indians of America or the aborigines in Australia. And they may be living in reservations specially put up to keep them from extinction.

The small community in Blogoland is probably the most vocal against importation of foreigners tp settle in Sin. Those in the market place are all gleefully doing their businesses.

As a kaypoh, me had jokingly went about finding out the reactions of hawker, service people, retail staff, coffeeshop and taxi driver etc. Most think increasing population improves their takings. Many did admit that they have little energy left for other activities such as leisure, interest, hobby, exercise and even time with family.

They are focussed mainly in making money. When asked if they did not feel having set their priority in living wrongly, most did claim that money is most important. No money no talk most iterated.

What has led Singaporeans to be so enarmoured with money to make them put their own health, family and leisure behind in priority?
Will the wellbeings of fellow countrymen and the homeland matter to them?

redbean,
i agree with you. But please don't give a specific number, but give a formula instead

Formula for population hike = millions in number that sufficient to put PAP back to power 101%

so if 7 millions not enough to vote PAP back into power, import 8 millions. If still not good enough, 9 millions, and so and so.

What to call this formula ?

This is known as
ScrewYou formula.

It might even win Nobel Prize for the most pragmatic and practical formula for oppressive regime to stay in power.

What do you think ?

Add three shift for a bedroom. Singapore can easily accomodate 100 million. Sg can also follow this ex-HK expert and develop a 100 million boat population all the way to the disputed islands in the South China Sea. With a 200 million population, Sg can punch above its weight and overtake USA as the world superpower.

Ex-Minister Mah before his 2 terms, Singapore population was slightly above 3mln, when he left 5mln. How can he not build more HDB flats?

Yes, population is going to increase in global cities, but don't forget that Singapore is also a country (aka cuntry in matilah's lingo). In global cities like London, NY, Paris, the locals can opt out if they do not like the high-cost and high stress. For Londoners, they can always stay up north in Watford, or further up in Lake District or even further up in the highlands in Scotland. Or at Land's End. Ditto for New Yorkers or Parisiens.

Where can Singaporeans go if they do not like Singapore the Global City? Relocate to Pulau Ubin, Pulau Tekong or Pulau Hantu? Or Pulau Belakang Mati?

@The 215:

The rest of the world is only one cab ride away from you anywhere you happen to be in Singapore. In this awesome 21st century you only really need 3 things to be a global "player".

1. 3G or 4G phone or tablet
2. Credit/debit card
3. Passport

Millions of Singaporeans (literally) have those 3 minimum items, and use them everyday to travel the world. It is so mundane and ordinary no one even bats an eyelid.

How rocking is modern life? I love it!

Matilah - if they follow your 3 items, they will soon mati lah.

I didn't mention it because I thought it obvious: FREEDOM is not, and never will be "free". Like everything of value, it has a cost, which must be paid. Paying forward is preferable to "owing", because owed costs usually incur an interest component.

In other words, you have to have the economic means to support your "freedom". Sorry, the government cannot help in this area. Their job is to pressure your economic means so you'll have LESS freedom and thus have to DEPEND ON THEM more.
