The escalating fear of foreign intervention in our way of life.
‘AMRITSAR: The Akal Takht, the highest temporal seat of the Sikhs, has marked an inquiry into complaints and allegations that Sikh prison inmates in Singapore are being forced to cut their hair against the community's 'maryada' (code of conduct).
The takht has acted upon complaints filed by Madan Mohan Singh, a social activist, who works for a Singapore-based anti-narcotics association.
Madan Mohan Singh had urged the Akal Takht to issue directives on the issue so the Sikhs of Singapore could take up the matter with the Singapore government and prevent further "humiliation of Sikh jail inmates."
He alleged on Monday that despite prison directives on regular hair grooming, the jail authorities in Singapore cut head and facial hair of Sikh jail inmates if they were found to be involved in taking drugs, smoking and drinking alcohol.
Singapore's ministry of home affairs had also conducted an investigation after Madan Mohan Singh had raised the issue.
The Sikh Advisory Board (SAB), the highest council of Sikh affairs in Singapore, had wrongly advised the Singapore government by labeling Sikh inmates as non-practicing and non-traditional, he added.
"The SAB has misrepresented the Sikhs in Singapore by condoning and accepting the sacrilegious act of cutting a Sikh's hair by a government department. In doing so, it has underestimated the hurt feelings of the community," said Madan Mohan Singh. –Times of India
The more foreigners we took and issued them with pink ICs, the more pain we will get if we allowed them to impose their wills onto our system. The foreigners, the greater their numbers, are likely to make increasing demands for the system to accept and adapt to their ways of life, culture and religion. The Govt must make its stand very clear now that foreigners coming here and given citizenship must accept our way of life, social norms and our laws. They must adapt, integrate and change to fit into our system and not the other way around.
In the above case, it is not a matter of whether the Sikh Advisory Board made the right and wrong advice. It is a case of foreign agencies thinking that they have a right to impose their whims and fancies on our Govt and our way of life. And our dull Govt may have to act to answer to all kinds of frivolous demands, trying to explain or adjust or appease foreign agencies.
Now there is an organization from India demanding our Govt to answer to them. What next, from Italy, the Philippines, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, China or where else demanding that their citizens or believers be treated according to what they wanted and deemed fit.
Hey, we are a sovereign country and not answerable to any foreign agencies. And any foreigners taking up citizenship here better behave and accept what we are or else piss off. The Govt has to make this stand very clear to all foreigners before giving them the pink IC, and to all govts or non govt agencies to stay clear of our domestic affairs. We are not any country’s colony and answerable to no other countries, powers or what shit they think they are. We don’t even have to do anything when outside agencies make ridiculous and unjustifiable demands on our system, sovereign and constitutional rights.

Criminals deserved to be treated like all criminals. Why should some criminals be different? Stop woffling.
There is Singaporean Sikh who told me they hated their long air and turban. This Sikh friend also told me that the older generation of Sikh suffered the Turban enough, and they do not want their own young people to wear it again.
These are precisely the reasons that closer to 99% of Singaporean Sikh born after 1970s do not wear Turban. They even fully shaved like everyone of Singaporeans during the NS.
Hence, it is clear that Akal Takh, is not trying to fight for Singaporean. It is fighting for the worst and most wicked criminal foreign maggots that commit crimes and injured Singaporeans here. It is fight to make life better for the hardest core criminal, who sin against the most hospitable host here.
Instead of condemning those mother fuckers Sikh in the cage, Akal Takh choose to defend their rights to have their hair longer than a satanic rock star.
Akal Takh never actively go after those Sikh all over the world who choose to wear a skin head. It has never ex-communicate those folks. But when the fuckers commit crime in Singapore, Akal Takh jump up and defend them.
It is getting obvious the FT increasingly fearless, to the point that the demand privileged for criminals who sinned against Singaporeans.
You are right that there are many modern Singhs who have done away with the long hair. So what is this agency going to do to them? Or what is the Govt going to do to NS Singhs that have their hair cut like all recruits?
Send an apology to Akal Takh and admit its crime now thaty it has admitted that SAB has given it wrong advice and all Singhs must grow back their hair?
Rock stars or wannabes think that long hair is attractive. In our hot climate, they look so scruffy and smelly.
This is not a case of "foreigners imposing will" lah.
This is a case of religious/ collectivist/ racial bullshit.
Unfortunately most cuntree have "freedom of religion". This means one-way discrimination/ special treatment is easily argued.
Religion is free from anti-discrimination laws. You can discriminate on religious grounds. However you are not allowed to discriminate AGAINST anyone on religious grounds.
Also, you can get "special dispensation" which supersedes any law "on religious grounds". However if you apply certain laws, and that conflicts with religion, then the law is WRONG.
The above examples are only two of the many reasons I loath and detest religion, and do not pass up any opportunity to shit on any or all religions, blaspheme against their mythical "sky fairies", and to label all their followers as "mentally disordered".
You are compltely ignorant of the Sikhs and their religion. The question here is that the Singapore prison authorities are forcibly asking the Sikhs to cut their hair. This reminds me of the time when the Muslim Mughals ruled India and put up a price on every head of a Sikh.
You do not force a person of a particular religion to comply with your own ideas. If you are a Christian or a Buddhist or a Muslim I am sure you would not want to be forced to give up your beliefs.
Hi Indarpal, welcome to the blog.
Yes, many of us are ignorant of the Sikh religion and ignorant of many other religions, even our main religions.
The issue here is that the country has its secular laws. In a secular country, the secular law is supreme. The govt does not need to want to know all the technicalities of every religion if it chose not to.
That is why I fully agree with Julia Gillard. Foreigners wanting to be citizens of another country must accept the laws of that country. If not they should exercise their freedom to find somewhere that can accommodate their peculiarities.
Once a country has to bend to one group, all other groups would want to do the same. We imprison Jehovah Witnesses believers for refusing to carry arms in NS. It is their religion. So what?
Buddhists don't kill. Can a govt hang a declared buddhist that is being sentenced to death?
I wouldn't expect you chinamen to understand this given that you're pretty a racially and culturally self-absorbed lot, but a person remains a person despite being a convicted criminal. To maintain one's non-criminal identities maintains an alternative vision of themselves and can be a part of the rehabilitation process.
One thing the chinamen i've spoken to can never understand is that we shouldn't see 'foreign intervention' as 'foreign', but a cause for thought and critical introspection. But i'm not surprised at the reaction here given chinese aversion to contradiction. So typical.
As for 'foreign intervention', that's pretty rich coming from a race that hails from china and has basically appropriated a malay country for itself. People like this chua and other commentators here should all be shipped back en masse back to their china where they can be with 'same same' and not have much to complain about.
Hi ed, I seldom called anyone dumb except Matilah for fun. In your case I meant it. The Chinaman in China have shown their two fingers to all religions. And as for contradictions, that is what they are living with. It is their ideology.
And I think for Akal Takh, to have the audacity to challenge a sovereign state on what it can or cannot do to its criminals is silly conceitedness, and basically primitivism.
Agree with you RB. Maybe the human rights activists will cry crocodile tears and accused the Singapore govt of violation of the criminal's human rights or religious rights.
Didn't they know that a criminal does not even have the right to his life if he commits a serious crime? When a criminal is imprisoned, he loses his freedom to walk freely. Now want to demand for religious rights?
Oh ed, the Chinamen, including the Indiamen and the Eurasian men did not appropriate the Malay land for themselves. In your anger you are not thinking clearly.
The island was first taken by the British. It went back to Malaysia and Malaysian land. Malaysia gave it Independence. Get the facts right. And the land does not go to the Chinamen. It goes to a multiracial citizenry.
You lose a lot of credibility when you lose your cool. Keep the heat below the belt. Don't let it go in between the ears. It will affect the head and your thinking.
Yep, so typical of his kind. Twist and turn facts to suit his false arguments.
Come to think of it, the criminals are having a holiday. Might as well demand for high tea while they are at it.
the prison authorities are not trying to insult the sikhism or the sikh prisoners. it is just a security issue. a turban or long hair tied up in a bun can be used to hide drugs or small weapons. i'm sure the prison authorities try to accommodate different religions as far as they can go. i'm sure beef are not fed to hindus or buddhist; pork not given to muslims and meat given to vegetarians. and some form of religious activities are allowed in prisons: praying and the reading of religious scriptures. anyway all inmates who go to prison have to strip and have their arseholes probed. i'm sure this is against most religions but there are no complaints yet. why? because it is a security issue. - m'sian pr
Security issue or not, they can't complain that they are the ones usually doing the probing.
Bhayee main blakang. hahahahaha! good one. - msian pr
First the hair and turban.
Bangle and dagger next?
Religion makes already ignorant people bat-shit insane and spectacularly stupid.
You want intolerance and ignorance? Embrace Religion

Fucking FT singh don like here, go back India. Singaporeans Singh has already got their haircut.
You FT Indians are really fucking cowards. Your brothers are being beaten by neo Nazi KKK from Aussie land, Europe to USA, you fuckers never complaint, but suck up white man ass.
In SG, you discriminate Singaporeans together with support of PAP. Get LOSSSSSS.
Prisoners' hairs are cut for their own safety, to prevent them from hanging themselves(suicide). Nothing to do with race and religion.
Looks like the invasion of foreign nationals vying for their own agenda over our country is in earnest.
In S'pore, the S'pore prison code must be followed. No ifs, no buts. Equally applied to all. Is it not?
Don't want to religious practices taken away in prison?
Simple.
Don't commit any crime here.
@Achtung
Bravo!
RB,
I have predicted this sort of issues -of migrant groups making demands to fit themselves - long long ago in th ST during those time when readers were given the space and latitude to post comments even longish ones.
One very significant reasons is the govt OPENLY declaring that it needs the foreigners for the economy. So from a seller's market that migration into a country should be and usually is in countries which are properly administered and confident, people who wish to come in must as a precondition accept the existing local norms. But when you go around shouting, nay begging, that the foreigners are doing the country a FAVOUR by coming in, which foreigner's head would not be swollen and not would not think that they can make all sorts of demands of a country becasue it DEPENDS on them to progress?
It's basically a short sighted, amaturish and desperate way of that the Singapore govt is doing things.
Seems that is is a wild accusation. Singapore Prisons came out to say that it is untrue and that they always allow Sikh to keep their hair in jail. Why India Times never clarify in the first place and just kick up dust. And who is the shit stirrer?

Anon 10:42, we are desperate alright, behaving like prostitutes in Geylang.
Anon 2:01, the important thing is that as a sovereign state, we should not have to listen to all kinds of organisations and be dictated by them. Even when Clinton pleaded for Michael Fay, we also bochuped and whacked his butt.
What is Akal Takh?
Hey everyone,
First of all - Sikhs are trying to stand for hardcore criminals.- No they are not they are trying to stand for the people who want to practice their religion.
Inmates in the world shave- Get your facts right. Read the article where US army has approved sikh to keep turban. (Thats freedom- Freedom to follow your faith/or not follow your faith).
Have you seen the reports of Human rights abuses in Singapore- problems with the judiciary in general. How do you knw they are wicked criminals. Do you know what made them do this crime( Do not generalize).
Also, what your friends told you about beard and hair its their opinion- again - DO NOT GENERALIZE. @veritas -Please do not be ignorant and read and understand the fight.
@ Yes, when the countries are secular it has the tolerance of all the religions. Being secular means freedom to practice your faith which is clearly not a case. You are talking about laws being supreme - that means courts decision on controlling social media is ok with you- as it is supreme. I don't have anything against the nation. The question is freedom of following their faith be whatever they are.
Hair is not fashion it is one of the 5 principles of sikhism.
