Waiting for ‘angmoh cun’ or white man’s ship

The wheel of fortune is turning and would continue to turn and fortune changes. In the 60s, the tourists coming here are the Americans and some Europeans. They were the rich and free spending tourists. The local shop keepers loved them. Every time an ‘angmoh cun’ is in town it will be boomtown Charlie. Business flourished, the service industries, food, hotels, shopping centres boomed. This state of affair went on till the end of the Vietnam War when the American GIs stopped coming. The waiting for ‘angmoh cun’ became a waiting game with no more Americans coming ashore.

The next group of free spending tourists was the Japanese. They came in the 70s and 80s. And they were the darlings of the tourist industry and the retail and service trade. All those involved in the tourist industry were eagerly waiting for the Japanese to arrive and to throw their money around. This came to an end too when Japan went into a recession, or its economy went to a stand still, with little growth. The free spending Japanese don’t come anymore. They had their moment of attention like the Americans.

Today the tourists that everyone is waiting for is Chinese tourists. They are the big spenders, much bigger spenders than the American and Japanese tourists and in bigger number. They did not just come to Singapore, to travel all over the world. And Singaporean shop keepers are not the only one waiting for them, the whole of Europe and America, Japan, Korea and SE Asian countries are waiting for the Communist Chinese to come. Some laid down red carpets to welcome them. Some European countries went to the extent of hiring Chinese policemen to protect them from local thugs.

The whole has indeed changed. The poor communists from China are now the rich communists that are throwing money all over the world. When they stopped coming, the local tourist industry wind down, the shop owners started crying. Where are the rich communists? We love them, we want them and we welcome them.

For centuries, the Chinese, especially the overseas Chinese, are ashamed to be called Chinese or identify themselves with anything Chinese. Even the Chinese also have very little pride and confidence in themselves. Today, the Chinese in China are very proud of being Chinese. The Chinese in Taiwan, once despised the mainland Chinese and wanted to call themselves Taiwanese, or even Japanese, are starting to think Chinese and feeling more comfortable calling themselves Chinese.

Chinese or being Chinese is no longer a dirty word. Chinese is now about being the richest nation, the most powerful nation in time to come, being rich and technologically superior, as good if not better than the West. The West is afraid. Never have they been challenged by another nation or civilization that can compete with them head to head in science and technology. The Chinese are telling the West your days of glory and supremacy are numbered.

China and the Chinese will upstage the Americans and the West in everything. Made in China 2025 is about China over taking the West not just in being the number one economy or number super power, but in science and technology. The Americans are trying to put a stop to this by starting this trade war, to prevent or slow down China’s rise as the most industrial and scientifically advanced nation on earth.

The wheel of fortune is turning and China is unstoppable. Singapore would be hung high and dry if the Chinese ships refuse to call at Tuas. Tuas would be a ghost harbour, a white elephant. Yes white elephant, if Singapore continues on its careless way to be on the wrong side of the Chinese equation.

Who cares about ‘angmoh cun’ any more? Everyone all over the world is waiting for the rich communists to throw money at them, in Europe and in the Americas as well.

Yet, the Daft Asian countries not cooperating and bash them.

Real Dafts indeed. Aussie purposely followed the U Ass A to recognise Jersualem as Israeli Capital and Land to drive a wedge against the Muslims and yet Matland instead of retailating against them gave Singaporeans HELL in six to eight hours of Jam and butter their arses in Woodlands and Tuas.

Enter the Dragon. The Chinese Commies are now ringing the cash registers of shopping malls, restaurants and hotels all over the world. Gone are the days when the tourist industry is driven by greenback or yen. The redback is the new rage. China has weaponised tourism. Countries are made to feel the pain of losing free-spending tourists from China whenever they indulge in China bashing. Canada will be the latest country on the Chinese hit list. Non-speaking Chinese countries are brushing up on mandarin. China has unconsciously launched a sort of cultural revolution as millions of its people go on vacation every year.

Talking about bad times, the COE prices are tumbling. Why? My multi storey car park used to be full up to level 5. Now level 3 also half full. How many people have given up on car ownership or cannot afford to buy cars anymore?

Singapore still thinks can hang on to the coat tail of a dying Empire and gambling on a pretentious big power that is nothing but a third world country to balance China. The little boys and girls really need to wash away the semen on their eyes to see the new reality.

Either they jump onto the Chinese growth engine or perished. No more one leg one ship when the Americans are hell bent to make enemy of China.

Did he threaten Singapore to take sides also?

  6. @RB, @All,

Very easy to make S'pore rich & to have tons of $$$$$$ coming out from your mouths, nose, eyes, ears, kacherng & pussies. Just open foreigner floodgates wider.

Just open another 20% wider and S'pore will reach the Asian Tiger prosperity of 1993-1996.

Open 50% and S'pore will attain levels of $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ never before seen in its 10,000 years history from caveman time.

Another method will be to make it easier for foreign companies to come here & set up shop. Currently EDB has tightened its rules for taxpayer grants & tax holidays over the past 4 years.

China’s rise with Xi Jinping continuing to direct her growth will make the world becoming more China-centric. Tourism is likely to spearhead such a move in tandem with BRI. China's growing affluence has brought growing influence. It had occurred in the past. The culture of Japan and Korea shows evidence of Chinese influence. In the future, more and more people will communicate in Mandarin and learn to use the chopsticks as they interact with Chinese tourists and do business with Commie China. The white men can see it coming and perceived it as cultural imperialism. There may be more and more Chinatowns sprouting all over the world but it is definitely not colonialism which is a white man's malaise.

  9. Prominent American author quoted prescient views of Lee Kuan Yew in interview with China state media.

Graham Allison, the Douglas Dillon Professor of Government at Harvard University, who coined the term "Thucydides Trap," told Global Times in an interview that what's happening in the relationship between the US and China is that the overall relationship is driven by a Thucydidean dynamic, in which a rising China is impacting a ruling US, with all of the natural and predictable consequences of that.

China is feeling bigger and stronger and feeling constrained or contained by America. America, which is accustomed to ruling, is feeling disrupted and disturbed by a rising China. If that's the case, this competition then spreads across the whole relationship.

Allison said that both Democrats and Republicans had been naive when they thought China was going to become a responsible stakeholder that was going to take its place in the America-led international order. And lo and behold, China wants to be China.

He quoted Lee Kuan Yew on this. "As China gets bigger and stronger, China will want to be China and accepted as such, not as an honorary member of the West."

Allison went on to say: "The reality is, unless China goes off on some other trajectory, and I think it's not likely that it will, China will inevitably get bigger and stronger. That's just life. And as I quote Lee Kuan Yew in the book, he says look, Americans will not like this, because Americans are accustomed to be No. 1 in everything. So this will be very painful. He said it will be especially painful for Americans because of a small, poor, miserable people they looked down on become big and strong. So this will take a long time. But ultimately Americans are very pragmatic."

  12. @ spend spend spend...no money? Borrow lah!!

I dunno. I look at the rapid growth of INDEBTEDNESS in China, and I know my frugal forebears would cringe in HORROR at the level the Chinese consumer is piling on debt.

Old traditional culture was: THRIFT....save, don't consume all your capital, be frugal and cautious.

Modern Chinese society is making the same bad financial decisions as the western societies. All the historical instances of "free spending tourists" occured in periods where there was lots of borrowing and spending. The Japanese tourist boom was built on CREDIT and DEBT, and massive money printing. Same as the ang moh tourist boom. The reason they could keep going is because their economies were PRODUCTIVE...i,e, productivity ensured that they didn't get into shit...although they eventually did.

Same thing with China. China has MASSIVE productive capacity. As long as they can keep that up, and keep selling their stuff (which they are despite Trump's tariffs), and keep their domestic economies pumping, they can sustain. The worrying part is that consumer debt keeps GROWING, and at a rapid rate.

Listen to your grandparents lah. Work, save, be thrifty and don't overspend or borrow if you can help it. If you need to, don't borrow too much and pay off your loans ASAP.

  14. @ Traditional values gone....forever?

Gone forever? Could possibly be, because CULTURE trumps any attempt to "control" the market. 20-30yrs back Singapore's MAS clamped down on the issue of credit cards. But many people still got into debt. Lucky, Singapore Chinese culture is still very conservative as far as money is concerned. Work, save, compound...and that made the cuntry rich. (seriously rich)

However The Strawberries in China, just can't help themselves. They are way out of control. boasting on WeChat and Instagram about the latest Prada or Dolce Gabano or whatever the fuck over-priced trinket they used their credit card for. Their parents and grandparents need to step up and gives these fuckers a few tight slaps because they are are serious threat to China's prosperity.

Unless something is done soon, this has NO "good ending!" Cultural change is best when it comes form families, not form The State. Parent and grandparents...time for you to step up and give the kids some "learnin'" Time to return and apply TRADITIONAL VALUES

The Chinese ability to Eat Bitterness is a highly prized asset. The Chinese work hard, work long hours and give it their all in order to continue to support parents and siblings, as well as their own spouse and children. Factory workers, construction workers, service industry people have migrated to the city to work and send home millions each year to their families still living in the countryside. Whole towns have grown up with 2 and 3 storey tiled homes that have running water, TVs, DVD players, washing machines, fridges, etc,. The enterprising spirit and toughness of the average Chinese worker with heavy traditions behind him is legend. He is willing to work longer hours, does a job nobody else really wants to do, live in whatever hovel or housing he can find and work his ass off to get that money NOT just for himself to live on, but for his family as well. He wiĺl save extensively for years before he thinks of enjoying the fruits of his labour. This is the foundation that Xi Jinping's Chinese Dream will be built on.

  16. All the spending today is basically funded by debt. Totally a different way of looking at things compared to half a century ago. The older generation save and only spend when they could afford it, and do not use borrowed money or money not earned yet.

The bankers created the debt trap, the whole mindset of people had been completely changed. They go to the banks to borrow money to buy houses and owed the banks big money. All the assets of the world are bought with money created out of fractional banking, bankers being allowed to borrow and lending out the money at multiple times what others deposited with them.

It is just one massive global property bubble that will deflate soon. You cannot just continue blowing up the bubble. It will burst at some point.

Even God is unable to help us!

  17. Matilar, u are right. Many of the China PRC massage ladies here make about 30,000 gross a month. Net of rental , advertising cost and expenses, most net 20,000 a month as a minimum. They carried the most expensive iphone and branded hand bag. Sure their lives not easy as they said they need to massage and jerk off 10 guys a day till their hands very tired. I am sure Matilar as a regular customer will know that. If he does not know, for his info, these girls do not allow him to sodomize them😀😀😀

  18. Demographics: China's median age is ~37 yrs, about the same as Singapore, Australia, USA etc. However China's population is AGING at a rapid rate. (Singapore is still the CHAMPION for the RATE of ageing population. We are in DEEP SHIT)

"Eating Bitterness" is one of those admirable traditional values to cope with life's hardship, and not only survive, but prevail in the LONG run. Many of us who grew up in times less prosperous than what millennials have today know that if we didn't "Eat Bitterness" we'd have long disappeared from existence.

My mum is a hardcore Asian Tiger Mother. It was very hard growing up under her scrutiny, hard discipline and no-nonsense attitude. When I was in Primary 1, she took me to a Death House in Sago Lane to experience the tragedy of life full on, no holds barred. The images of that dank and awful death house haunts me to today, but it certainly kicked my young ass and scared the bejesus out of me to "wake the fuck up". Brining home the school-term';s report card was a traumatic experience. I kena "grounded" dunno how many times: no TV, no music, must study and keep "study log book"...right thru primary and secondary school. Both parents grew up during the depression, and had their youths curtailed by WW2. Nothing like ongoing personal trauma to teach one about "Eating Bitterness". After that, whatever the vagaries of life might be, I think one has the fortitude to deal with it.

I definitely don't see this in China's millennials. The population is rapidly aging, and this attitude of "live for the day" is going to have serious consequences if something isn't done. Sure, these kids are well-educated and globally literate. But they just cannot take even a little bit of OCCASIONAL "hardship", nevermind sustained hard times like their forebears.

One only has to "gather data" by observing the Chinese millennial culture on social media like WeChat. Many of them are legitimately wealthy, but many more others are going deep into debt so as they don't "lose face" and "keep up with the Jones
's " or whatever the Chinese equivalent is to "the Jones's".

When China's central bank---The People's Bank of China---gets worried, everyone better take notice, because the problem is REAL.

On the local front, I see the same type of "financial cancer" amongst the young. Granted, some of them are wealthy or have rich parents, but a whole lot more have no problem maxing out their credit to be "hip".

Maybe I'm projecting my own "strict" growing up. When it comes to the data, Singapore is not so bad compared to the consumer indebtedness of other 1st World cuntries. However, historically, there's is cause for concern. Credit card borrowing is record high. Unpaid credit balances are record high. That gives me the absolute jitters.

It is high time to cut back, tighten the belt and learn (the young have no idea) how to "Eat Bitterness", like the older folks had to because there wasn't any choice.

You might think that, but I don't do P4P (pay for play) anymore since I stopped being a salesman when I had to 'entertain" prospects. I'm sure those women work very hard. Good for them. We all need to make a living somehow. For a long time already, I use "social skills" to dapat women. I love the game. I love to talk to people. I love to make women laugh. 🤣 However other guys might prefer the P4P method for casual sex. Whatever you choose lah bro...up to you.

As usual, the test of success in any enterprise is FREE CASH FLOW. If after expenses your FCF is 20k a month, I say damn good for you. Hopefully you'll be smart with your money, and don't spend all of it at the Prada, Dior or Hermes shops. In other words, avoid Takashimaya and Ion Orchard!! 🤣😂

  21. @ 111 Bubbling blowing:

The data show that the chances of any bubble bursting is between 30-40% depending on which study you read. i.e. there's a BETTER chance that the bubble can go on and on longer than you "calculate", and NOT burst. A deflation is more probable than an outright burst. But in a random world, anything can happen!

Anyway, even after a catastrophic BUST, there's ALWAYS recovery. Regression to the mean: i.e. after some time, life returns to "normal", and then the shit starts again.

A coin has 2 sides. It is too simplistic to conclude that wisdom is the sole prerogative of the pioneer generation and absent in the strawberry generation. It is a fact that a donkey grows older but never any wiser. The character of any person is dependent on nature and nurture. Upbringing is important. Peer influence too. So whether a person spends within his means or saves for a rainy day is not dependent on age. In an ever increasing materialistic world, the pursuit of instant gratification will pose a threat to upholding traditional values.

    ReplyDelete
  23. The character of any person is dependent on nature, nurture and upbringing. But peer pressure is probably the most important influence in later life.

Intelligence comes from knowledge, which in turn is the result of education. Wisdom comes from experience and no amount of education can impart wisdom. That is why wisdom is never associated with youth.

  24. Titiana Ann XavierDecember 17, 2018 4:00 pm

Intelligence is innate. That's nature. Knowledge acquired through education and experiences is nurture. Having wisdom is being able to make sensible decisions and that comes from a combination of nature and nurture. Young leaders who are wise seek good advice before making decisions. Old leaders who think they have eaten more salt often end up as dictators.

  25. This is nice and quite correct and yet truthful summary of Chinese people around the World:

Being Chinese-The simple plain truth about the Chinese!

This Chinese-Australian professor has a funny but excellent explanation about the Chinese people. Why do Chinese people work so hard to succeed in life?Chinese people don't go about bombing, terrorizing others and causing religious hatred. We live peacefully with everyone on Earth.

    Here is the plain truth.

#1. There are over 1 billion of us on this earth. We are like photostat copies of each other. You get rid of one, 5 magically appears (like ballot boxes). Yes,it is scary, especially for us. We acknowledge that we are replaceable, thus we are not particularly 'special'. If you think you are smart, there are a few thousand more people smarter than you. If you think you are strong, there are a few thousand people stronger than you.

#2. We have been crawling all over this earth for far more centuries that most civilizations. Our DNA is designed for survival. We are like cockroaches. Put us anywhere on earth and we will make a colony and thrive. We survive on anything around us and make the best of it. Some keep migrating but others will stay and multiply.

#3. NOBODY cares if we succeed as individuals or not. But our families take pride in knowing we have succeeded. Yes, some will fail. We take nothing for granted. We don't expect privileges to fall on our laps.No one owes us anything.

#4. We know we have nothing to lose if we try to succeed. Thus, we have no fear trying. That is why Chinese are addicted to gambling. We thrive on taking risks. All or nothing.

#5. From young we are taught to count every cent. What we take for granted like money management, I have found out recently, is not something other cultures practice at home with their children. It surprised me. But truth is not all societies or cultures teach their young this set of skills because it is rude to them. Yes, most of us can count because we are forced to and the logic of money is pounded into us from the beginning of time (when mama tells us how much she has spent on our milk and diapers)

#6. We acknowledge life cycles. We accept that wealth in a family stays for three generations (urban myth?). Thus, every 4th generation will have to work from scratch. I.e. first generation earns the money from scratch, second generation spends the money on education, third generation gets spoiled and wastes all the inheritance. Then we are back to square one. Some families hang on to their wealth a little longer than most.

#7. It is our culture to push our next generation to do better than the last. Be smarter. Be stronger. Be faster. Be more righteous. Be more pious. Be more innovative. Be more creative. Be richer. Be everything that you can be in this lifetime.

    TBC:- Part Two

    ReplyDelete

  26. Contd: Part Two

#8. Our society judges us by our achievements... and we have no choice but to do
something worthwhile because Chinese New Year comes around every year and Chinese relatives have no qualms about asking you straight in your face - how much are you making? When was your last promotion? How big is your office? What car do you drive? Where do you stay? You have boyfriend? You have girlfriend? When are you getting married? When are you having children? When is the next child? When you getting a boy? Got maid yet? Does your company send you overseas? etc etc etc. It NEVER ENDS... so, we can't stop chasing the illusive train - we are damned to a materialistic society. If you are not Chinese, consider yourself lucky!

#9. We have been taught from young that if you have two hands, two feet, two eyes, and a mouth, what are you doing with it? "People with no hands can do better than you !"

#10. Ironically, the Chinese also believe in giving back to save their wretched materialistic souls. Balance is needed. The more their children succeed in life, the more our parents will give back to society as gratitude for the good fortune bestowed on their children.Yes. That is true. And that is why our society progresses forward in all conditions.Nobody pities us.We accept that.No one owes us anything. We know that. There are too many of us for charity to reach all of us.We acknowledge that. But that does not stop us from making a better life.

This lifetime.Opportunity is as we make of it.So, pardon us if we feel obliged to make a better place for ourselves in this country we call home.It is in our DNA to progress forward for a more comfortable life. But if history were to be our teacher, look around this globe.Every country has a Chinatown (seriously) but how many government/countries are 'taken' over by the Chinese people.

Don't be afraid of us overwhelming your majority, we are not looking to conquer. If we have moved away from China and Chinese governed countries, we are NOT looking for another country to administer. Our representatives are only there to look after our collective welfare. They are duty bound.

We prefer to blend in and enjoy the fruits of our labor. We enjoy the company of like minded people of all races.

After all, we are only passing through a small period in the history of time...

so, use our skills and we can progress forward together
