Workers Party MPs’ appeal for fund – A mini referendum

‘Low Thia Khiang, Sylvia Lim and Pritam Singh revealed in their blog, entitled In Good Faith, that they have raised SGD $477,653, as of 10pm yesterday evening – just over 24 hours since the trio appealed to the public for help to fight the multi-million dollar lawsuits they are facing in court
On Wednesday, the opposition party leaders revealed in their blog that they have “depleted our personal resources,” having already paid $600,000 from their own pockets to their legal team as the trial progresses.’ Posted in theindependent

The 3 senior WP MPs are facing charges in court for dunno what and facing bankruptcy to the tune of $30m. The legal fees so far came to $600,000, paid out of their pockets and from friends, not from party fund. Defending one's honour in court is no cheap stuff and one who cannot pay would likely have to accept defeat and a guilty condemnation even before going to court, or unable to proceed for short of fund.

The WP MPs have made a public appeal and the money came fast and furious, nearing half a million within 24 hours. The latest count after two days is more than $900,000 from more than 5,200 donors and counting. What does this mean?

The charges, based on the amount they were accused of mishandling or mismanagement or dishonesty is a staggering $30m. For those who willingly donated to the appeal is as good as saying that they believe that they were doing it in good faith, the WP's defence in court, or else they would not be forking out the money if otherwise. For those who could not afford to support the 3 MPs financially, they have good words to share and to keep their spirits high.

From the political perspective, this is like a mini referendum for the people of Hougang and Aljunied to cast their vote of confidence for their MPs. Two days have passed and more than 5000 have voted with their pockets. The two constituencies have more than 100,000 voters. If the 51% that voted for the WP were to contribute $10 each, 3 plates of char kway teow, that would bring in another $510,000 to the fund. But it is not so much the money that counts. It is the people showing their faith and confidence in their MPs, an affirmation of their trust and support for them.

How much would the WP be able to raise and how many people would donate is still too early to tell. The picture would be clearer in a week or two.

PS. Please do not make comments about the proceedings in court.

  1. This willingness to contribute to the fund not only indicates the vast confidence people have for the WP accused, it also points to the disgust people have with what the PAP government is trying to do. Period.

  5. They want total control over the sheeples of this tiny rock. To all the people of Singapore, open you eyes and look into your heart when you cast your votes in the next GE. Do not be sway by the bonuses and carrots they give you to buy your votes. By all means accept the sweets and candies, but vote against them, just to tell them they cannot have their ways all the time. Tell PAP they cannot pay themselves their sky high salaries and many months bonuses every year. Show them your disgust about the way they treat the man in the street ny bleeding them with all the taxes. Once and for all get them out. A few more opposition MPs in parliament would help for checks and balance. They should not have their own way all the time.

Sure the PAP will definitely declared an Eerection if the WP MPs would to be thrown out.

    But their own, not necessary.

But to their disappointment either they have 90% Fark You Votes or 90% other Oppostion Votes by other parties or if other WP members still able to stand for elections.

Our Idiot Trade Minister can still sing on a useless topic of what's Elitism when as Trade Minister the economy of sinkieland is going to go bust.

Prices of all commodites going up.

  12. The Evil Empire's running dog is following the Evil Empire system of fascism of absolute total control.US has a duopoly dictatorship between the Republicans and the fake Democrats. However this American poodle wants full dictatorial power for itself and will not tolerate any opposing voice. The Evil Empire is ruled by psychophants, rogues, crooks. scoundrels, cheats and charlatans. IS the poodle governing system a carbon copy of its grandmaster ?

There should be no more distinction between the 70% and 30% in this little wacky island. We either swim or sink together. We are entering a crisis of critical time. We need to exercise right thinking and do what is right and proper. We must bring back graciousness and enlightenment back to the island in the sun. We must strongly oppose fascism and resist the dynastic prone fascist dictatorship. We can make a small start to make the beautiful island a safer and more harmonious society where no one is hounded or fixed up for opposinng views by just making a donation to help the Workers' Party' MPs financial dilemma in a law suit.Freedom and Democracy in Singapore is at the crossroads. Help the Workers' Party's MPs and take back our freedom and democracy.

  16. Town councils and municipal services should be run by civil servants so that there is consistancy of work, service and duties as had been the case in the past. MPs are elected to serve the people in parliament as law makers and formulate policies for the good and benefit of the people and the country. They are to oversee that the government of the day does not become rogue. They must refute bad policies and poor governance and give support where it is due. MPs should never run town councils.

All town councils must eventually be abolished and all municipal services revert back to the government's centralise municipal services where there should be more efficiency and economy of scale as it is run by civil servants with no break in continuity of service even if there is a changed of government.

The subsequent changed to Town Councils is based on subterfuge reasons. Down the road we see opposition town councils are always fixed for obscure reasons.

Singapore is turned upside down. Real disgusting.

  18. The dishonourable son and his followers, together with the traitors within the WP itself who brought this case to court, will suffer their Karma and rot in hell. This is not just an injustice against the three WP leaders, but against the 30% of Singaporeans as well. It is a sin beyond redemption. JBJ will be turning in his grave by now to see the demise of the WP.

The PAP not only fixed the WP, they will also fix the 70% in due time. The 70% better not be too happy that the WP is gone. They better buy more lubricating jelly to prepare their arse for sodomy, the favourite dish of the Malaysians.

People will not be angry is the law is applied fairly. But it looks like PAP town councils can get away with dubious investments that resulted in millions lost without being taken to task. That is not the only occasion that the law has not been applied fairly and justly. The money given to the PA was also found to have been misused, but the people involved were not taken to task as well.

What is the composition of the $30 million suit? What about the work done over the period and how much more did the WP paid their cleaning contractor as compared to what the PAP contractor would charge for the same job size and scope?

    ReplyDelete
  19. Hello All, Ohe million had been raised and WP had stopped the fund raising.

Hurrah! This shows the mini referendum is that the donors are disgusted with the PAP and had sided with the WP.

Even though past few trials events are demolishiby to the WP.

    Cheers

  20. The PAP may think there is nothing that Sinkies can do, now that they have total control of all elements of the state organs. But there is still the ballot box to contend with. That they have gone to all lengths to entice, threaten and demolish the opposition shows they still have a fear of that vote in the hands of every Sinkie.

But the next election, if the WP is demolished, hopefully the backlash at the ballot box will come. It will be difficult to dislodge them, but if the PAP thinks it has prided itself in mastering the art of control, the aftermath may be a painful downfall to savour.

Think of Hillary Clinton and Najib Razak. How confident were they of victory before their last election, but the fall was really painful for them. They really do not expect it to happen.

  21. The rogues have surely kicked themselves in the arse and damned. It is sure driving the people to have a Singapore Harapan in the next Election. Hopefully the opposition parties will solve their differences and get rid of their petty ego to form for once a solid united party to kick out the pappies and bring back freedom, graciousness and fair play to Singaporeans.

Any government that has become a monster should be changed.

  25. If they keep dragging the court case, the $1m may not be enough. The WP would have to pay for court time and lawyers' time in court and out of court. If the accuser lawyers keep on bringing up more things or raise more arguments, more questions, bring in more witnesses, talk long long in court, the WP would have to pay for it.

  26. 8.31 pm anon, u are too kind in your comment. I am a poor nobody and can give only $10 which is a big deal for me though I think is of not much help for the cause lar

  27. Rb it's not a real referandum lar as it only shows 6000 plus people actively support them as indicated the number of diners foe 1 million rather than 1 million donating 1 each

    ReplyDelete
  28. Anon 4.52

How you know 6000 donors donated??

It's does not matter what's the number of donors that donated.

Within twenty four hours half a million already raised. Next day one million.

This shows the support and enthusiasm of the people as in a Mini Referendum that spite the PAP.

WP been an honest party halted tordination drive as they felt enough for now.

They are not pleading for their own cause but the People's Fight against Injustice.

Unlike the greedy monies grabbing appetite of the PAY AND PAY.

WP could have not suspend the drive and it might have come up to millions next few days.

But for now, enough for the fight and extras not going into their coffers

Everywhere, we have jokers and shit stirrers who have to throw spanners in the works.

  29. Less than 3 days and it ht $1m. If they only extend it for a week. Many of the ah kongs and ah mahs did not read internet and still waiting to here the news and how to donate. They may even queue up at meet the people's session to throw money into a donation box. They dunno how to use internet to donate and got no bank accounts to use cheques. All they have are a few dollars in their ovaltine tin cans.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Right Mr RB.

WP would not like to have the extra millions and have to make refunds as excess to the donating public.

Also, how to refund based on what's criteria?

Secondly, don't want the petty Emperor and his eunches to dig their arse by having another Court case of keeping the excess monies.

  31. Apologies for the typo errors. Should read:

After removing the goalpost, they now can score goals at will. Don't even need to have elections. It is all walkovers, unless the traitors go in to stage a show for the world to see. One day, they may even choose the opposition candidates to stand for 'erection' for the sake of the 70%. The show must go on without the WP.

Just calculate 600,000 if the Donation Drive goes on.

    How many millions???

Even one donation against the PAP is one too many to spiit at them what's more 6000 within 48 hours or so.

    Numbers of donors are immaterial.
