Crazy Rich Asians - The Awakening

I read some of the reviews about Crazy Rich Asians to find out what people were crazy about. Here are a few paragraphs from a Bourree Lam, she called herself American, about what was so startling to her about this movie. It is about Asian men, that there are Asian men that are really men, just like Joe and John, that can be desirable, and can speak and believe it or not, are human beans on this world. Before this Crazy Rich Asians,  there were no Asian men, only white men. Wow! What a great discovery.

This is a little bit from her article in Yahoo News titled Crazy Ripped Asians.

'This has hardly been the case in America.

Before the 1900s, Asian males were often portrayed as dangerous to Western society. In the era of the Chinese Exclusion Act and Yellow Peril, Asian men were depicted as cartoonishly cold-hearted villains. Anxieties that Asian men may marry white American women led to racist portrayals of Asian men as evil, feminine, and generally undesirable. “The Asian male figure was conjured as an Other who is threatening and dangerous at worst, and distasteful and dismissible at best,” said L.S. Kim, an associate professor of film and digital media at UC Santa Cruz, of that era.... But I posit that there’s one aspect of the movie that we can all agree on: I’m talking about the abs. All one thousand of them.

Serving up male bodies to gawk at is one of the oldest tropes of the rom-com genre. These movies are made for swooning, and swoon we did. Have you ever seen so many Asian Adonises who have misplaced their tops in one movie? Singapore is known for its tropical climate, but is it codified that a man must spend half of his waking hours (and 100% of his sleeping ones) airing out his upper half?
It’s not superficial, either. This display of Asian male beauty is fighting a decades-old narrative in America, a racist one where Asian male bodies were either portrayed as made for kung-fu or made for being laughed at. If you know the history, you might end seeing the abs in Crazy Rich Asians in a slightly sharper light.'

This Bourree Lam must have swooned over the male Asian bodies that she had never seen before all her adult life. Is she 25 or 35? She could not be older as she remembered this western bias existed only for decades, not centuries. Where had she been? Oh in America of course, she is American. And there were no Asian men in America, or at least in her life or in her association.

This is not the only awakening. Since Bruce Lee kicked open the white men's only door of Hollywood nothing really happened after that. Perhaps if Bruce Lee could carry on kicking for a few more years, think would have changed a bit more. It was like they repaired and put back the broken white men's door after Bruce Lee left.

It seemed that every writer or actor/actress, I mean of Asian origin has suddenly woken up to the fact that there were no Asians in Hollywood other than the stereotyped, very nerdy, no character, the cartoons, or kung fu fighters. They have awakened, they have removed their blinkers, that Asians are also human beans but strangely non existence in Hollywood or in the USA!

Wow, unbelieveable. This is a great scientific discovery since they discovered the theory of gravity or homo sapien originated from apes. Now every Asian actor/actress is standing up and asking the same question that they did not think should be asked in the world of movie making.  But this is the world of the bananas. They did not know the existence of Bollywood and the movie world of Hongkong, Taiwan and now China. These movie industries don't exist or don't count. Their only world of make belief is the Hollywood stereotyped of James Bond, Tom Cruise, and who else, their white gods. And they were comfortable living in this world of white gods and nothing else. Now why would Hollywood want to cast Asians when their stories are western and catering to a western audience?

This is perhaps the greatest happenings of Crazy Rich Asians, the awakening of the bananas, that before this movie, they don't exist and they did not know. Now they know. But unfortunately this is going to be another flash in the pan incident and would be over when the light is out.

  3. This show is not about asians or not but more about rich vs poor. The rich, whether asians or not, behave like spoilt toddlers all over the world. Thus Jesus said it is very hard for the rich to go heaven. He nailed it. Amen.

  5. If Chinese look down less on themselves n look up less on Whites, generally respect from others will increase. Less angmoh tua kee mindset.
Nevertheless, it should not be about color of skin but respect to those who are honorable regardless of race.

  7. Herd mentality developed through a prolonged period of inculcated fear and / cultivated inferiority is the reason why many Asians looked up to Whitemen. Asian women are more susceptible than Asian men mainly because some of them looked down on their own men and some of them have been attracted to the superficial appearance of a "well-dressed gentleman" image of the Whites during the colonial times.

Asians who have been slaving for the Whitemen under the British Empire, like those in Hong Kong Singapore, Malaysia and India, tend to think highly of their White Masters, mainly due to long years of domination, subordination, suppression, intimidation, coercion and control.

Asians who have been under the control and "protection" of the Americans, like those in Japan, South Korea, Thailand, Taiwan and Vietnam, also tend to look up to the Americans in particular and Whitemen in general.

  8. RB is right: Crazy Rich Asians is just a movie, and like anything which is a "cool story bro...", tropes and stereotypes are EXPLOITED to The Max. It plays on people's long-held biases, and expectations.

Rom-Coms used the tried and true "Romeo & Juliette" derived narrative, and delivers each and every time: Boy & girl have the hots for each other. Something gets in the way to keep them apart---very common is family interference...i.e. they or some members of their families don't approve of the relationship. And so the story develops from there.

Clipped British actor Henry Golding, (Nick Young) is not even Chinese---he's eurasian (pan asian, chap cheng...hang whatever your preferred label is) of English (father) and Iban (mother) union.

Also the movie is predominantly AMERICAN. It is a Hollywood movie casting Asian as SPOILT RICH CUNTS...which does a great disservice to Asians in general. First they cast Asians as dumb fucks running laundries and restaurants, then evil villians like Fu Manchu. Asian identity was given some "respect" when Bruce Lee came on the scene... but after his death, sunk again back into more negative than positive stereotypes.

BUT, putting the seriousness aside, after all this is ENTERTAINMENT, not real life...the movie is good old fun stuff. And the stereotypes portrayed are SATIRE...ie. Kevin Kwan is POKING FUN at the silly tropes, cultural biases, idiosyncrasies of Asians (bananas) in western/ westernized societies like Singapore.

Asians, like all general collective terms, are not in reality, one single HOMOGENISED GROUP where everyone is more or less "the same". Asians are as diverse as the rest of humanity. There is no umbrella of Asian culture, as Asian cultures all differ from each other.

So yah, this is entertainment. Not real life. It doesn't accurately reflect real life. Rich Asians are the minority. But they make for good entertainment because you can spice up your narrative with lots of juicy tidbits.

Enjoy lah. Dun ANALyse until you choke all the fun out. And please don't start slang-slanging like a Brit or an American. It is annoying. Be like Dick Lee---a Singlish speaking Banana. 🤡

    >> RB, not really lar. According to Matilar, even as a small botak in Australia, he has been getting free screws from white women in Australia. Only thing he never mentioned their age leh😭 <<

    Kanninah, you misrepresent me lah.

    1. I don't care about age lah. If the chick is not fat and reasonable looking, (aka "boleh tahan"), I'm fine with that. Yesterday I was chatting up some 18 year olds, just for fun. One of them even mentioned out loud "I like this man!" because I'm a funny guy and can make chicks (of any age) laugh. I left it there, didn't pick up, and bid the group "goodnight". But man, she was a HONEY. Old enough to be my granddaughter lah. 🤣

    2. I have never got a "free screw" in my life. My most expensive screws have lost me 3 houses already in 41 years. I am not a Brad Pit or George Clooney. I am more a thinner version of Danny DeVito. So I've always had to WORK HARD to get LAID. Definitely cannot rely on my looks or social status.

Lucky I can "buka" conversation with anyone. Especially chicks. Because I teach "manipulation", I have my body language cues, posture, vocal tonality all down pat...like second nature to me. The 3 second Rule: Within 3 seconds of EYE CONTACT, you say something to that person...anything...just open up, see what happens. Never fails. Even if you don't "DAPAT KONGKEK", you're practicing a very important communication skill. The more you do, the better you become.

    3. I don't just bang white women lah. I like all women, in all their wonderful diversity. Colour? From deep shiny black African to the whitest Scandinavian...heck, I don't care. If got "chemistry", then IT'S ON.

  10. In the US, Europe and some affluent Asian countries, you can see many pseudo Westerners who have forgotten their ancestral roots. It will be a rude awakening when they realise that they are never regarded as their own kind by the genuine red-hair White supremacists.

  12. US Senator John McCain, 81, died of brain cancer Saturday.

Singapore leaders rush to pay tribute to McCain.

Prime Minister Loong said he met Mr McCain on many occasions over the years, most recently in October last year in Washington.

McCain is well-known for his anti-China outbursts. In a blunt speech in Sydney last year, he accused China of acting more like a "bully" than a responsible stakeholder in the Asia-Pacific region after growing "wealthier and stronger," urging US allies to unite to challenge Beijing's "aggression."

"He always spoke his mind, and I will remember his wise words of counsel," PM Loong said.

Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan said: "Senator McCain's tireless diplomacy, unwavering sense of conviction, and outstanding service to his country earned him respect and admiration the world over." Bala also said McCain is a real hero.

But why would Singaporeans bother about McCain?

McCain is a hero to Americans, ditching outstanding service to his own country. It's none of Singaporeans' business.

    WTF !!!

  13. More than 700 physicians, both GPs and specialists, have signed a petition from Médecins Québécois Pour le Régime Public saying they do not want the rise, and they would rather have the extra money go to patient care and services. The group represents doctors in the province who strongly support public access to healthcare.

"We, Quebec doctors, are asking that the salary increases granted to physicians be cancelled and that the resources of the system be better distributed for the good of the healthcare workers and to provide health services worthy to the people of Quebec," the letter posted on 26 February states.

How many Singapore doctors put to shame???

  16. McCain flew warplane over Vietnam and bomb and kill poor innocent children and woman on the ground. His plane was shot down and he was imprisoned for 6 years. Like that considered war hero ?? Should be considered war villain!!

To the Americans (and PAP elite) he's a hero, but to the Vietnamese he's a murderer !
