20th Asian Masters – Singapore’s medal haul

3 days of wet weather almost ruined the conscientious effort of the people of Rugao in organizing this bi annual event. Rain came pouring exactly on the first day of the Meet and during the Opening Ceremony. This did not dampen the spirit of the people of Rugao. The children and youth were out in full force to welcome the visitors and athletes to the game, donning raincoats over their beautiful costumes. They were full of enthusiasm and charmingly disarming. They danced in the rain, as young as 10 or 11 years old. The youths were in high spirit, boisterous and in a joyous mood, their youthful innocence and carefree spirit were more than enough to bring joy to everyone. This event could be their first international event and they were putting out their very best to make the visitors feel welcomed.

Fair weather returned on the third day and so were the medals. Singapore came home with 4 golds, 5 silvers and 9 bronzes. (3 still unaccountable)

The top performer in Team Singapore is Tan Kim Seng with 2 gold in 200m and 400m in the 55-59 age group. 85 year old Kor Hong Fatt did just as impressive with gold in 10,000km, silver in 5,000km and bronze in 1,500m.  The other gold is from Steven in 200m. Steven also won a bronze for 100m as well. Ansgar won a silver for 5000m. Jason, the team leader brought home a silver for his 100m hurdles and was poised for a gold in his favourite event in the 400m hurdles but had to rush home after receiving message that his mother had a stroke. Belinda Foo and Linda too had their shares of silvers and bronzes.

And Leong Hon Cheong just reminded me that I have left out my good friend Paul Su, ex national runner and his bronze medal for 100m.

More details of the medals winners will be added to this post later.

The Singapore Team also had the services of Rick Mather, a PR from UK and Mark Dixon from Australia and Reza from Iran. Rick brought home 2 bronzes, for the men’s 4x100 35 age group and 400m. These two angmos thoroughly enjoyed their time with Team Singapore and in Rugao. Mark almost brought home a beautiful and instant wife and son from his one week stay in Rugao: ). Reza too was having a great time with the strong Iranian athletes in Rugao. (I totally forgotten about Taka, our Japanese team member. Only knew he was in Rugao after chatting with him at the Flash athletic meet this afternoon, 7 Oct, at Bishan. He had an injury just like Thomas and were unable to compete in Rugao though making the trip there.)

Will add in more info as they came in.

PS. To all the regulars here, I am back. Normal service will resume ASAP.

  4. The important thing is not about Medals..It's about wat Good Sportsmanship is. ..u got to live till that age to compete that race is already not easy ..so is to take part in a race..many elderly already plagued with diseases & unable to race, some got wealth but no health, some got health but no wealth ( like those card boards collectors, screwty, cleaners, delivery people etc..)

  13. NS time ran 8-10km to pass test was kinda big event at prime age. Mr Kor could manage 10km (6 over miles) and be the number one is rare. He is 85 year old.

Without consistent training, running 10km can be fatal.

Some boxing fighters at prime age died because of lacking in training before the fight.

Mr Kor should write about his regular training for folks to learn: how to train up and what to eat daily.

    Mr Kor deserves salutes.

Forget about those MIWs buggers of calling these Seniors to Parliament...these blood suckers will ask all the medals winners award monies (if won) for tax!(b4 u sportsmen get a chance of a standing in Parliament..maybe Halimau wud like to wear Uncle Kor gold medal ) ..it's in Miws blood & motto lah..even our local marathoner Ah Soh also got fed up with SA & don't even donate or pay these SA buggers 20% of award monies Lah..

  15. Dear Chin Leng and Team,

    Congratulations! Well done! Welcome home!

It is really heartening and truthfully joyous to know that we have an 85 year-old, Grand Uncle Kor Hong Fatt, who has done exceedingly fantastic, with a gold medal for the 10,000km event, a silver medal for the 5,000km event, and bronze medal for the 1,500m event.

This triple-medal speaks volumes about Grand Uncle Kor's health, prowess and tenacity that put many younger people in their place, me included.

Overall, the 18 medals netted is also something to cheer about for Singapore and all Singaporeans!

    Once again, WELL DONE!

  16. Since it has proved that sinkies are so long life,85 still can win metal,it may not be a bad idea to consider to withhold or give cpf payout
    at age 80.

  17. Next NDR Ah Long may feature Uncle Kor as exercise is proof of longevity & healthy lifestyle, he may label uncle kor as the Kor-Man. After tat, Ah Long gonna raise the national retirement age to 70 years old, majority Sinkies will not be able to smell their coffin money. MediShield premiums will be jacked up since majority Sinkies can live longer. That's not all, if run elderly seniors become cashless they will be sent to work as Health Ambassador or participate in event like national athlete to win awards monies or work as tissue seller, karang guni, private hire drivers, security or delivery etc for a living, all the additional payouts to seniors is as good as gone case..

  18. Another oldie initiative like the RC that could result in what is posited by the Anon.
But this time, young Singaporeans shall not be as lucky as those born pre-independence.

During the british rule, many of the richest south east asians are Singaporean british subjects.
They included Tan Kah Kee Lee Kwong Jian, Tan Lark Sye, Lim Nee Soon and many parents of current tycoons in the banks, hospitality and property owners now in their sixties and above.

After Sin was handed to the locals for self rule, there are few or no one of high repute except Lee Kuan Yew. Even then, his fame has become negative and may even gets stenchy as more of his policies are found to cause the many problems existing today. As a consequence his reputation could turn severely negative into ill repute.

Not all well intent initiatives are propitious.
Some have dire consequences that badly affects the people later.
