Public transport to raise fare?
When was the last fare hike? Is public transport a strategic asset, a scarce resource? If so it must be priced right to make the people feel the pain of higher transport fare so that they would not abuse taking public transport unnecessarily and wastefully. Building infrastructure for public transport is very expensive and new transportation system is not cheap, not when you need to build for another 2m people in an already congested piece of rock. All the costs have gone up. The public must be encouraged to travel at off peak hours or not to travel at all and make unnecessary trips to stress the public transport system. Do these kinds of reasoning sound right or idiotic?
With rising cost of public transportation and better quality of public transport, some media said service quality has declined so not sure which is right, it is only right to raise transport fare. The improvements over the years with each price hike did not seem to make the quality of service improved much. Maybe the increase is not high enough so not much improvement could be seen.
Would anyone think it is clever to raise transportation fee by 30% like water? Someone must have been reading Machiavelli and the advice of Machiavelli must have gone into their heads. When making increases, make it big and painful, the public would soon forget the pain. Don’t do it bit by bit. When giving out handouts, then do it bit by bit to milk as much good will as possible like wanting to give a 10c discount, give it in 10 times or 5 times, like 1c or 2c at a time at a time. The daft would be grateful for 5 or 10 times.
Are the public expecting to be slammed with another big transportation hike like the 30% water fee and comes the next GE all would be forgotten? Transportation hike got good reason, to improve quality of services. You want better services, pay more. So simple.

When kopikias, train / bus captains and administrative staff earn more ,naturally transport n water fees need to be increase so as to give them a so call decent salary.

Very simple. Just get most of the Gaji Buta CEOs, Directors, Ministers, Parrots MPs take home pay less 80% and the surplus can pay the ordinary workers.
I would like to support the organisers for the Hong Lim Park event but already committed.
ReplyDeleteOne word for such organisers, if they want to organise an event, do the necessary, do it well and don't waste time and waste people's time on half baked effort.
How many of you know that there is such an event at Hong Lim today? The very minimum is to publicise the event, get the info out to as many people as possible. Don't expect people to know that there is an event and will go without being informed.
Organising an event with so little publicity and notice and expecting a good turnout is going to be disappointing and would give reason for critics to sneer at the poor turnout. Better not to organise than to do so if not done properly.
Better not to organise than to do so if not done properly.
ReplyDeleteRB 9:54 am
Tiok. Because if like that ah, how not to give reason for critics to sneer at the poor turnout?
Also better not to have opposition than to have one which is not united, ready to be govt, or worse, even praise the incumbent as a competent govt.
Like that how not to lose votes being opposition?
As sure as day follows night and night follows day, the fare hike is in the minds of the PAP governemnt, And why not. If you desire a fantastic public transpore system you must be willing to pay for it. Nothing comes free these days. If you think you cannot afford the fares for public transportation then by all means get yourself a peddle bike. That way you save money and you do not even have to pay for gym membership. Redbean has brought this subject up and it will be discussed on social media and when it come it will not be a total surprise. Well done Redbean you have done a good job for the pAP government.
ReplyDeleteIf you want a good transport system, then pay for it, and stop whinging about it. You have give the government a 70 % mandate, so live with ti.

ReplyDeleteThe poorer the turnout, the better?
Then (all sorts of excuses given so) taxes would be (blatantly) jacked up even more?
Wouldnt that serve the purpose of the opposition?
See how the economy going to be turned around going into supplementary budgets, more deficits, more taxes, more pains (for sinkies) and one big vicious cycles and see how papigs get put of it come GE2021?

After Temasek gobbled up SMRT, further hikes in transportation charges are highly anticipated.
ReplyDeleteAs more Singaporean lose their jobs, the income tax revenue for the PAP government falls. So the PAP has to raise consumption taxes such as water rates in addition to the recent hike in car parking fees. A further rise in the GST from the current 7% is a logical next step.
Public transport to raise fare?

Aiyoh. So obvious.

Rb based on your last few days articles I can sense your frustration but really bo Bian as 70% likes it that way. Actually talking about strategic, many things beside water are also strategic. You mentioned air and transportation. "Are the public expecting to be slammed with another big transportation hike like the 30% water fee and comes the next GE all would be forgotten?"
ReplyDeleteI think this keey sentence must be elaborated. I read Yesterday newspaper, one reporter said rising public transport fare is against principle of what i forgot. How dare this reporter went against the mighty god light ministar from malaysia? I will not say a word against the might god. Since this god took over from the mighty godless auntie sawsaw, he spent more to reduce the track faults. Now only regularly breakdowns with signalling faults. Auntie sawsaw got the prize for an inquiry with people trapped at 5 storey depth station without light and airflows. The god is better, no such trips any more.
I think public transport is not for ordinary citizens to buy the services. So this reporter Paul was wrong to assume that. Public transport in Singapore is for show, for display, to show to the world, Singapore is a world number what in transport. Its like showing the reserves has alot, but never tell the world actually the reserves has been drawn dont know how much and how many times, is there any more reserves.
If you cash run out, you are not allow to borrow, how do you react? U rob? U go lying down not to move to save energy. This is what taxes or increase in fare is all about. If you have no money to take transport, go lying down at home. If you have jobs to take transport, do make sure you vote for opposition to get your pay increase after 2020GE. If not you ending up working for free: salary minus all expenses equal to zero savings, that pap s formulas for you and your children s future.
You should not remember the increase in fare in 2017 while casting votes in 2020GE because you will burst your brains. From 2017 to 2020GE, there will be more increases in taxes, as cash is running out in Sinkiesland. Ordinary citizens NS men cannot find jobs to pay installments and bills. Foreigners have good laugh taking fake degrees or easy to earn degrees in mumbai or chennai to take up jobs should have been given to NUS and NTU citizens. Then the products cannot be worth in the market in US or China, not even sold in Sinkielands. Companies scream at the elites for not allowing them to hire even cheaper labor from sunny land. This is the cycle in Sinkieland now: products cannot get foothold in market, tourists find Sinkieland not worth visiting, too costly, and too crowded to smell the stench air in mrt. Taxi are unaffordable to tourists. Retailers open shops and close, hardly have enough sales to pay the staff. But the elites need to increase their pay in December. If not increasing transport fare for 300% as suggested by economist for water, then transport is NOT a strategic resource.
Strategic resource deserves 300% increase in fare, not 30%. This is the conclusion, and vote for Pap in 2020GE for another round of increases. life will get better with increases in taxes.

The Madness in the Political Leadership of Singapore - Part 20
ReplyDeleteThe Madness of Not Knowing Shame
The amount of money in circulation is equivalent to the spending power of individuals (from their income), organizations (from their profits, loans or donations), from the government (govt expenditure), from foreign investors, and from tourists.
Any increase in price of goods and services, taxes, levies, stamp duties, or day-light-robberies, will affect everybody, including government employees, foreign investors and tourists.
Unless there is an increase in foreign investments, pumping money into the country, and an increase in tourists' dollars, the amount of money in circulation within the country will remain the same.
So, how can hairy-fairy reasoning such as "prepare for the future" and "strategic resource" be relevant to helping to grow the economy, present or future?
My proposed solutions to grow the economy:
1. Lure more foreign investors to pour money into the country.
2. Attract rich tourists (or people with spending power) to spent more money in the country.
3. Reduce the outflow of money such as remittance sent by foreign workers to their respective countries of origin.
4. Increase exports through local manufacturing and value-added goods and services.
5. Encourage, give emphasis, direct and drive a new movement (comprising locals and joint-ventures with foreign talents) to come out with new inventions and innovations.
6. Get off-shore banks, instead of local banks, to lend money to locals to help them buy properties and other assets.
7. Build many small low-rental modern 'factories' to enable local cottage industries of high quality to grow and produce high-end products, intellectual properties, entertainment programs, performing arts and fine arts for overseas markets .
If a government's only resolve is to suck more and more money out of the pockets of commoners, this only shows clearly, succinctly and resoundingly that, despite having president scholars, expansive consultants and expert advisers at the government's disposal, there are no new ideas readily available to solve and/or improve the country's economic problems, except the easy-way-out - tax more and increase prices!
If Ministers had the audacity to demand and receive the world's highest salaries laughing all the way to their banks every month, they had better come out with the best solutions to solve the country's problems, and not take the easy road that even the farmers and peasants know how to travel.
