National Geography - A publicity stunt in Raffles Place

A group of actors were hired and dressed up as soldiers of the SAF and formed up in the heart of Raffles Place. The public was encouraged to shout orders to the soldiers to stand at attention or at ease, maybe pusing kanan and pusing kiri as well. Some of the lunch crowd, including aunties, were amused enough to shout their orders at the actor soldiers, and they reacted like robots, drilled to respond to commands.

Some Sinkies find it nothing amusing but insulting and belittling our army boys, the guardians of our security. Below are some comments posted in Yahoo News.

‘In a comment on Yahoo! Singapore’s Facebook page, Renson Seow said that regardless of whether the men were full time NS men or paid actors, what mattered was that the stunt portrayed NS men and the army.
“They were being advertised as automatons, playthings for the command and amusement of civilians, who in fact…owe it to our NS men for their security,” he said.
Another Facebook user, Au Kah Kay commented, “It makes a mockery of NS and trivializes the sacrifices that Singaporean men have to make to defend the country and its people, including foreigners.”
A part-time student, 31-year-old Adrian Poon, whom Yahoo! Singapore spoke to, also felt that the stunt trivialised life in the army.’
I think it will be more hilarious and meaningful if we let the foreigners yell at our actor soldiers and see how they will obey without questioning. Let the foreign maids have a good too, and the construction workers. That could be a reality in the foreseeable future when more foreigners are in charge or join the SAF. Then we will have foreigners ordering Sinkies around like robotic toy soldiers. It will be an eye opener of what things could be in the future to come. Mesti akan datang.

When the truth sinks in. What is the moral of this publicity stunt? Is there one or none?

  1. Soldiers are by nature not much
    different from automatons.
And if they are any better, they are
probably cyborgs, with a little artificial
    intelligence PROGRAMMED into them.
No one should expect our soldiers, NS and Regulars to be any different from those actor soldiers engaged by Yahoo.
    All will take Orders blindly.

  2. My apology for a mistake in my above comment.

'those actor soldiers engaged by Yahoo' should be corrected to 'those actor soldiers engaged 'NATIONAL GEOGRAPHY'

  3. redbean and those cocksuckers on FaceBook mentioned in the article, you are humourless motherfuckers. Plus you've embarrassed the entire nation. Some people will no doubt think you as 'patriots'...well, then fucking National Day Honours for you!

Back to the 'humourless' part: Gee, I'll bet your life sucks bigtime. Are you sad all the time? Do bolts of anger shoot through your being, just because other people are happy you're just a perpetually miserable fuck?

These sorts of "happenings" breathe life into the cuntree and its people. It is merriment. Fun. Fucking around.

So laugh motherfucker. Free comedy for you. The aunties are laughing. And you're not.

    Sad cunt.

  6. Who the hell is this big mouth Matilah ... I think he is not our kind and maybe not a Singaporean . Most Singaporean served NS with pride and dignity . All of us have given years of our time to defend our country . This National Geography publicity stunt is nothing amusing and humorous to be enjoy . If you are a real Singaporean , you should feel ashamed of this whole episode for our NS men .

  7. Matilah is the resident jester. Just treat him as one and ignore him when he is high on drugs.

  8. @838:

You know nothing about me or whether I was NS or regular. Best you take redbean's advice and laugh or ignore me. For you own sake and sanity -- which is already monumentally fucked, judging by your prose :-)

  13. Never never let the FT pull their rank on us citizen. When I loss my permament job and had to work as temporary worker at Jurong Island, those FT order me like nobody, forced me to work under heavy rain to complete task. When they found out certain job need to be handled with a licence and I hv it, they sweet talked to me, try to hv my training notes with the least efforts to get the icence. they never hv it from me. Guard S'pore never never lost it to those FT, they jump start in our land grap our benefits, find short cut on things that favour them.

  14. There are many ways to look at this stunt and many people will look at it differently. For this issue, because many NSmen have gone through the experience, there are going to have personal feelings and experience about NS that others would not undertand.

There are feelings, sensitivities and emotions involved.

  15. It is exactly because Singaporeans did and do National Service for too long that they and their families from their grandparent's generation have turned into robots.
Rest assure that other than a few sensitive beings, the rest are not bothered with the Incident. Afterall, Sinkies cannot deny that they are precisely brought up the way they are almost military-like.
Or in other words; made and make into robots.
    Enjoy the trainning!
