The hottest issue in cyberspace these few days is not the haze or the
near epidemic dengue situation with record numbers of people having
dengue. The hottest issue is who should pay for the cleaning of a hawker
centre’s high ceiling. And this has led to the WP being grilled by the
PAP and how hard they had to work to defend themselves. And mind you,
they had to work very hard and very smart and had to be very careful as
the debate in Parliament would be in the air after the 9.30pm news.
Can’t imagine what would be shown if the WP made a mess of it and could
not defend themselves effectively.
For the few hours in Parliament, I believe both parties would have spent
a lot of time and resources preparing their positions, how to attack or
defend the points raised. For the amount of money they are getting, it
is really hard work. It is a tough battle with 7 fairly new WP MPs other
than Low Thia Khiang, against the full force of the PAP MPs and the
veteran ministers. And the last session on the cleaning of the hawker
centre must be so important that it was nearly full house in Parliament.
This is quite a rare experience.
Let’s put our hands together for the parliamentarians on both sides for
working so hard to debate on these national issues for the good of the
residents.
Did anyone say that the WP MPs are not working, or the PAP MPs are not
working? To be a WP MP means a lot of pressure. Doing too little for the
people sure kena walloped. Saying too much of the wrong thing lagi
chiat lat. Go to Parliament means one month cannot sleep, got to prepare
to ward off attacks from all corners. Must wear protective gears just
in case.
I think there is an invisible hand stirring the longkang water, getting all parties worked up.
ReplyDeleteLike that everyone forget what to aim oredy.
ReplyDeleteImagine, a full house! WHat a difference it would make if all the MPs could be galvanised by the minister to roll up their sleeve and go out and clean the Parliament cafeteria or nearby coffeeshop. Or kill some mosquitoes and their breeding sites. That will surely be a significant contribution to our national dengue effort. It will take only about 35 minutes?
ReplyDeleteHawker centre cleaning - making a Mount Everest out of a molehill.
ReplyDeleteHundreds of millions of dollars in over-spent at the Juvenile Olympics - making a mountain disappear into a molehill.
Precious time in parliament should be reserved on big national issues and yet this is wasted on hawkers issue.
ReplyDeleteThis is not election time,no need to use mud-slinging now!
I still think the entire parliament should be sacked, and the Parliament House auctioned off to private developers. A good contender is Far East -- they are the biggest and the best private developer here and do awesome work. Maybe they can convert Parliament House into riverside lifestyle-type concept property -- office + shopping + entertainment.
ReplyDeleteCan you imagine living on the river like that -- prime location, Boat Quay opposite, The Boat House restaurant just across the road, via underground pedestrian tunnel...wah. So much better than having the govt occupy such a luxurious place.
/// Maybe they can convert Parliament House into riverside lifestyle-type concept property -- office + shopping + entertainment. ///
ReplyDeleteAmen - I will go along with the entertainment part. Convert it into a Crazy Horse type house where stand-up comedians like Ms Vivian can do her things and entertain with her fictions and jokes.
Watermelon have given papaya many slaps already. Those people who accused watermelon are still sleeping or severely brainwashed by papaya. It takes a lot of courage and sacrifice to challenge the big rich bully papaya and showed people the truth.
ReplyDeleteAi ya, this is not fixing, it is to ensure that the market cleaning task is cheap and diligently executed.
ReplyDeleteWhat do you think?
Wow, the PAP is so kiasu when 2016 is still long way off. Three years away and they have started their mudslinging campaign.
ReplyDeleteReminds me of the James Gomez case. They think people will give them more respect just by harking on the WP's integrity? Forget it. Lots of people are still pretty sore with the tens of millions overspent on YOG and not accounted for.
Let those without sin cast the first stone. But let not that stone bounce back to haunt them again. They never seem to learn their lessons well.
I believe before one pass the judgement, it is probably more 2-sided and objective to run around the whole of Singapore to get a feel of the lives of Singaporeans in general. In democratic elections in any country, often voters are the judges. Voters including even the not so educated older generation are not that uninformed or gullible. In beauty pageants, often they are contests of the prettiest. It is often remarked by seasoned senior veteran political journalists in the West that political elections are in a way contests of the "ugly". When voters make a choice, more often than not, it is a selection of the least ugliest. Passing judgement about a society and drawing a conclusion from there when one only sees a small part of the society is similar to a blind trying to describe an elephant through touching the body of the mammal. A blind who only touches the trunk would describe it so. Another who touches its ears likely would describe an elephant differently. Thus to come to a conclusion by a far from holistic feel of an entire economy and society likely would lead to frequent disappointed outcomes and seemingly incomprehensible ballot choice of voters. In the end, who is actually the blind describing the elephant through a less than complete comprehensive feel? The majority voters or the baffled critics?
